Three times , now - there have been searches on my Blog for "Phil Lynott" Double Neck - from different locations around the world!! So, on the basis it is not some random question, I have tried to find references to it/images. The only thing that keeps coming up is that apparently, Phil had an Ibanez 4 & 6. Is this true? [/quote] It's true, I have a facination for them but more interesting for me, I have been a Lizzy fan for as long as I can remember and this is the first time I have come across this. I am well aware of his Ibanez link but never knew they built him a Twin Neck. Better still, it's a 6 on top and 4 on the bottom. Would love to see some better pics. Cheers. You could ask the poster where they got the info. The Admiral Posted May 11, 2014 Share Posted May 11, 2014 I'm not sure where I read it, but I believe the double neck was made as a special order for the tour which supported his solo albums, as the band had both a guitar player and bassist, and he took the parts required to reproduce the album. I also recollect that the majority of the band was made up of black musicians (as is borne out by the photo), and I recollect his mum suggesting in something I have read, possibly her book 'My boy', that he enjoyed embracing that cultural aspect of his life, which hitherto, given his upbringing in a virtually 'all white' Ireland in the 1950s, he'd never had the chance to explore. Great book by the way, which Holly Hunter owns the film rights to, and was slated to start filming with her as Phil's mum and Gary Dourdain, from CSI, as Phillip. KevB Posted May 12, 2014 Share Posted May 12, 2014 Getting a bit confused here. Are there a lot of songs in his solo stuff that has two separate bass parts at the same time? I can imagine the need for a second guitar in the live band but 2 basses seems a bit weird (I know there are bands that have 2 bassists but I wouldn't thought Lynott's material would need it). Green Alsatian Posted May 12, 2014 Share Posted May 12, 2014 Phil used to play guitar on a few songs ('Ode To A Black Man' and 'Solo in Soho' to name two), so the second guitarist would go on bass. On the 'Live in Sweden' album which was recorded during some downtime with Lizzy, Phil plays guitar on Solo in Soho with Doish Nagel playing bass for the song (and John Sykes on lead guitar). The only song I know with two bassists (or possibly just a double-tracked bassline) is 'Talk in '79' from Solo in Soho. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just some fun trivia here (by the way this is an awesome Phil Lynott thread... cool double neck... and for what it's worth I have a double neck guitar/bass that shares the same output - silly, but true) anyhow.... other songs with >1 bass Walk on the wild side and big bottom are two classic examples of 2 or 3 bassist on the same song (3 I think in each case but I'm not honestly sure - although big bottom is only arguably a real song... ;-) My instrumental jazz fusion band Charivari back in the 90s had two bassists for at least two songs in one of our studio albums... of course I wrote both the songs and having been the original bassist before moving to guitar with another bassist joining it was only a matter of time before we had duelling fretless bass stuff going on LoL. Doesn't really count though - nobody knows who I am or who that band LoL donovan had some songs with two bassists, or at least two bass parts... mostly in his big hits that were produced and arranged by John Paul Jones (no surprise there is lots of bass in those tracks ;-) does it count? not sure: much of the early beach boys stuff in the studio (carole Kaye with Brian also playing and sometimes another cat also) Pink Floyd's One Of These Days (David is a heck of a bassist too... back in the waters days they experimented more) Aerosmith - back in the saddle (6 string bass for lead parts!) [/quote] Sorry - should have been clearer! I was talking about the tracks on Phil's 'Solo in Soho' album. More than one bassist? Gotta be 'Big Bottom' by Spinal Tap (two 4-strings and an 8-string)!
