Painting/finishing enclosures

There's loads of how-to's on the interwebs, most of them suggest long drying times and lots of oven bakings (and not the oven you cook your tea in, unless you want some unhealthy chemical cocktail as your next pizza topping).

A good guide on doing it in one day if you're short on time/patience: http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/boxinaday.html

I got myself a tin of hammerite spray paint off ebay and used that when I did this.

Give your enclosure a quick wash down with soap and water and then let it dry.

Find a dry, dust-free well ventilated area and then do a thin coat with the spray paint. Leave it a few hours (the longer you leave it the better). Then do another thin coat. Repeat. After 5 or 6 coats you can probably stop. Then leave your enclosure alone for 72 hours until the paint is totally set (or find some way of baking it to speed the process up).

The key is patience.

Ok cool, thanks, so that covers block colours and things like that, but what about little designs and details etc, what do people use on their boutique pedals....like Wooly Mammoths and the like?!

Cheers

Hey Si,

I've just done something similar; for the paint I popped into the local car-bits-and-pieces shop and bought some car painty stuff (http://www.hycote.co.uk/ -double acrylic as it turns out) which looks very nice on the pedal, and now I'm trying some waterslide decal paper for the details - http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/.-Inkjet-Water-Slide-Decal-Paper_151.htm - which so far it looks pretty good, and reminds me of making Airfix Aeroplanes.
Don't know if that helps!

I have yet to start building my own pedal, in fact I intend to start in a couple of days. My wife is really into crafting, card making, that sort of thing, so for her birthday I bought her a CraftRobo Silhouette cutting machine ( http://www.graphtecgb.com/craftrobo/craftrobo-silhouette.html ). It's perfect for cutting stencils and vinyl decals for pedals... though she doesn't know that's why I was so enthusiastic about getting it for her... So if you know anyone really into crafting it might be worth asking if they have one, and if they don't.. encourage them to get one...
