rockape Posted April 22, 2011 Share Posted April 22, 2011 Hi everyone, I have been a guitarist of the smaller six string variety for around 40 years (always played bass air guitar though....strange!), but I finally got my first (new) bass last week...... a Precision bass from the Squier classic Vibe range in fiesta red. I was inspired to seriously learn the bass guitar by the late great Jet Harris, who I was very fortunate enough to have worked with during his last few years (he once loaned me his '62 ri P Bass that Fender awarded to him). I had a budget P Bass some years ago (Marlin.....nowhere near the quality of my new one), but only ever used it for recording (I later gave it to a good friend of mine), but I just can't put this new CV bass down (I'll post some pictures elswhere in the forum). Also had a Japanese Teisco bass for a while, back in 1977. I would also love to learn how to play slap bass too, but I'm told a Jazz bass would be better for that style?....better start saving up again...... There maybe one or two members here that know me from the JV forum? Obviously a Japanese JV bass would be my first choice, but prices and availability present a bit of a problem. Are you a bass guitar teacher? I need to get a small practice amp first though (I tried a small Fender Rumble bass amp recently.....great little amp!). I do have a 400 watt valve bass amp at my disposal, but as I found out recently, it's not too house friendly. I'm on that large slab of rock just south of Weymouth (hence the name 'Rockape'). [/quote] No worries. Nice to have a little dorset crew on the forum. I love it out your way. I used to gig on the naval base at Portland. They were pretty rowdy affairs with a hell of a lot of booze involved but we were always treated well. Lessons - i have taught a few people in the distant past - i am not a qualified teacher by any stretch of the imagination but i could certainly put a few sessions together that might help technique and avoid some of the common problems that peeps struggle with. There is/was talk about a Dorset Bass Bash. Whats that i hear you say. It was a number of people from the area hire a hall somewhere and turn up with our equipment, a picnic and spend a day trying different basses and rigs and generally having a very bassy day. I never really got involved seriously with the local music scene here (not sure why really?), though I played in various bands over several years in London and Hertforshire. When I moved to the area 12 years ago, I met up with a couple of music producers (by chance) and found myself doing sessions. It was here that I met Jet Harris, and was asked to play backing guitar for him on his last (and sadly to be his final) album 'The Journey' (great times!). Jet once asked me if I would look after his basses for a while ("play 'em if you like" he said, which I gladly did......sorry...tried to). Being a guitarist, I found his Fender VI a joy to play....playing full chord arpeggios in six string guitar tuning......beautiful sound!...I used to love watching him play on stage (whatever guitar he was using). I did once play 5 string bass (borrowed from the studio) at a cultural festival in Bristol with some members of the old West End show, 'Ipitombi'; It was myself on bass and Nigel Hopkins on trumpet, with loads of African drummers and dancers. We were given three tunes to learn, but they roped us into very song; All I could do (after panicing!) was play 'percussive' bass lines (thank god for that low 'B' string!)....it was a huge amount of fun! A Dorset Bass Bash! Interesting! I'd like to get involved in that (please let me know if you hear anything more about it). Last years' was in Shaftesbury, and we had folk from Somerset, Bristol and Wiltshire there too, with a drums/bass/ulien pipe improv jam at the end.....we don't do normal down byere' Hope to see you sometime soon. I didn't know Jet Harris but was friendly with Cliff Richards guitarist, a guy called Martin Jenner, who sadly passed away some time ago. He used to live in Bournemouth and play with a lot of local bands. It would be great to catch up and have a chin wag. You should post on the Items wanted part of this forum for your electrical stuff. You will be surprised at how helpful bass players are to each other. I bet someone can help you out. I am keeping an eye out for the Bass Bash thingy. I think it was planned for June in somewhere like Gillingham. I'll have a dig round on the forum later and see if i can resurrect the thread. While I was over at his place, we had a great chat about basses, bassplayers, fishing and other things we found we had in common, and it's all thanks to this brilliant forum. I have sold thru here before and bought too.[/quote] Hi again, The first three to go will be an old unlined fretless Stingray 5 in a honey type sunburst, an almost unmarked Pedulla Rapture 5, single Bartolini with a beatiful birds eye maple fretboard, in a sort of butterscotch finish, and a US G&L 2500 5 string, again almost unmarked, in a sort of red sunburst. Have yet to sort some photographs and prices out. Next in line MIGHT be an Alembic Orion 5 fretted in the usual flame maple, ebony fretboard, although I've taken a liking to this one all over again after getting some larger position dots fitted by Paul Strike. Great sound, but some buckling (which is pretty standard for this finish). I'm not desperate to sell any, but would like them to go to good homes, for sensible prices. Cheers for now.
