It's like going with a 2EQ bass directly into a mixing console and use the parametric mids on the console. It's brilliant. I installed one in my 1986 Sabre where the original preamp was fried. Overall the 3EQ John East preamp very nicely catches the MM 2EQ characteristics but with useful additions of a very nice sounding bright switch and the semi-parametric mid control. I was after a 'Ray, but they were slightly out of my price range; I found this for sale at £800 in a shop on Denmark Street and fell in love. The salesman said they'd bought it from the bass playing brother of a fairly well known British jazz guitarist, but much to my embarrassment I've forgotten who it was. It's certainly not led a sheltered life, but it plays fine. This is as close as it gets and im a total convert to fives now although I switch to db for a quarter of my gigs so after struggling with 4 and fives I can switch my db brain on when playing a 4 string, I use a Warwick thumb bo at practice sometimes, that said I grab a Ray5 as soon as there is a key change or drop tuning (sometimes both!) [/quote] NIfty, the colour was what caught my eye initially, it was black originally, but for whatever reason it had been done in a satin trans red when I got it, looking at getting it gloss clear coated at some point.
