Recommended Posts

Oh yes!!!!
Just looked now, £1270 still looks good to me but just shows what a good deal the buyer of the 77' natural one with the oh so rare and cool teardrop case got for £130 more! I think there was a few hundred pound more in that one but the seller was gassing for a king bass that was also for sale.

Yes it is nice, I actually wanted a black pre EB then when I found my natural one it was just too good to miss out on condition wise, Since then I have found natural to look more right for pre EB's, Black and RW for 90's Rays and any colour for 5's for me. Although my teal is very nice and the neck has aged to a mellow colour now.

The only problems with that black 79 is the mute kit missing and for that money I would want at least a period case or better still an MM teardrop one.
Will you guys pack it in, you're giving me pre-eb GAS even tho I'm a die-hard EBMM guy. Good job I'm skint and relatively gig less at present :)

Im concidering starting an MM porn thread rather than just the one we have including EBMM, Does that seam elitest? Im clearly not as I have 2 EBMM's the 5 being bought after the pre EB. It would be nice to have a dedicated pre EB thread including the Sabres too I guess. What do you pre EB fans think? At the moment there appears to be an underground network of owners who know who each other are where as Im obviously more out there in the forum as it were it would be nice to have us all in one place and see who has got what etc but would it just be me and Mark (Gunsfreddy) on there and everyone else keeping quiet? :)

That guy's basses are always a little bit on the rich side... :)

As for having a specialized Pre-EB MM porn thread - I'd post my 2 on there. But they are BOTH black though... :)

Cool I will get one started soon then and there's nothing wrong with having 2 black ones that's just twice as good as having one :)

Interestingly, now back on at a lower £1795....

Still a wee bit rich for my tastes, £1500-ish would be on the money, damn me thinking that natural one with the teardrop case would run its natural course..... :)

The age for the pre EB 83 is a bit odd really the serial puts it to about 79-80 but I guess the bridge could of been from the bottom of the pile, 83 with a 3 bolt plate cant be right though surely?, It could be a bitsa IMO. Also it says a mute is missing, I can see all four thumb screws but not the springs which isnt too bad as they can be got along with the pads for £25 , Im not sure what he meens?

Yep the serial is Mar 1979. I'm gonna vote bitsa.
Wonder why the neck date isn't visible?

No neck date is quite common, mine hasn't got one (go see the all new pre EB porn thread!) but it certainly does appear odd for a body dated that late to have a 3 bolt neck more than anything else as the bridge may of been a leftover. Parts bin final blowout before EB took over maybe?

I have had a message back about the 76' without its plate on.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
He still didnt answer my question about what colour the plate is thats meant to be included though. He has added a load of pics but a lot of them are blurred! He did give me an indication of what he wants (or his mate wants) but I cant make my mind up if its good or not so Im keeping quiet about for now you can always ask the same if you like, you might even get a better figure?
Pro's- 76' quite rare and mostly all there.
Cons- No epoxy preamp or even pre EB preamp for that matter.
Drilled out body for jack socket.
Still not seen the pick guard or its condition.
Original knobs missing.
Thumb turns and springs missing.

Still not sure on this one........

Something's not right somewhere....

My Cutlass is definitely from '83 as it has date stamps both on the neck and in the pocket from Sept '83 - but it has a 4 bolt neck, and the bridge is different as it's not the through-the-body type.

My StingRay is harder to date as it has no date stamps at all. I remember that years ago (probably around 1987 - before the days of the Internet) I contacted Strings & Things to see if they could help me to date it and they reckoned it could have been made anywhere between 1979 - 1981. This was basely purely on the serial number. I do remember them telling me that the serial numbers were renowned for being all over the place though.

Check out the following serial numbers from Gav Townsend's excellent www.musicmanbass.org website, they are not exactly in chronological order: 1980 > '83 > '79? > '81 > '83 > '79!

B021601..1980. Black with Maple. 4 bolt. Top load bridge. Tilted headstock logo.
B021613..Neck and Body Sep 1980. White with Maple.
B021621..Body 2 Feb 1983. Topl load bridge. Hollow saddles. Bridge now fitted to a 1978 White refin Bass.
B021635..Owner says 1979 (?). Black with Maple. Black pg. Top load bridge. 4 bolt neck.
B021642..Volume pot dated 8th week of 1981 ("1378108"). Other two pots dated 2nd week of 1979 ("1377902"). Pre-amp has protection resistor in White lead to jack ( a 1982 factory upgrade).
B021656..Described as 1983. Sunburst with Maple. Black pg. 4 Bolt neck. Top load bridge. Tilting headstock logo.
B021684..Neck date 21 Mar 1979. "Powder Blue" with Maple. No pg. Black PUP. Owner advised by ex MM employee that finish is rare original and original as to not having a pg.

After much reading through of the different changes made to StingRay parts over the years (hardware, preamps, logo design changes etc) I concluded that mine is a '79er.
