After having skulked around here for over a year now I thought it was probably time to say "hi" to everyone and stop being a forum stalker. I'm 46yrs old and have been a bass player for the last 30 of those (with odd forays into playing other instruments from time to time). Mostly stuck with folk, folk-rock and what is now called "roots" music for much of that time but have played in rock, jazz, blues, C&W and covers bands along the way. I play in several bands and dep as required in others, so I'm usually out playing about three or four times a month. Instrument wise I use: [b]Ibanez SR505[/b] - skinniest neck I've ever found on a 5 string. [b]Fender Fretless Jazz[/b] - timeless classic but with updated Seymour Duncan tone control circuit. [b]ESP LTD 6 string[/b] - causing much consternation to the two guitarists in one band I play in. [b]Aria ProII SB900[/b] - an original that I bought new back in the 80's and still use today. [b]Takamine 4 string[/b] Acoustic Bass - hidden at the back of the music room as my wife doesn't know about it... yet... [b]NS WAV4 upright[/b] - feel the floor vibrate... Amplification is a Peavey Tour 700 and a choice of 1x15" and/or 2x10" Warwick cabs (or both if I'm feeling evil ) and the usual smattering of effects. icastle Posted November 6, 2010 Author Share Posted November 6, 2010 Had a few minor niggles with the ESP - the nut had a sharp edge to it that was rather painful, the control buttons were too far down the pot shafts and tended to grate against the body and the action was pretty poor. In fairness, this one had literally just come into the UK and was whisked away before any checks could be done on it. It's quite a heavy beast but is extremely well balanced. The neck is a little wider than the Ibanez and Yamaha 6 strings, but is somewhat slimmer - so it all balances out in the end All in all, a fantastic instrument that ESP could easily slap another £300 onto and still get away with it! I also have an ESP Ltd 6 which I bought 2nd hand from ebay. It was my initiation into 6 stringers and have since managed to persuade my wife to buy me an Overwater fretless 6 for my 50th. I found the ESP spacing a little narrow compared to my other basses. You do get used to whatever you have but I kept missing the strings with my right hand when playing faster runs across strings. Not an issue with my Overwater which has same string spacing as my Warwick. Other than that it has a nice low growl from B & E strings. Doesn't cut through very well in a rock band set up although to be fair I didn't spend a lot of time setting amp correctly. All best Dave[/quote] Hi Dave, You really [b]MUST[/b] have a chat with my wife... I do have a tendency to miss the G if I play faster runs but I just blame the drummer... I use mine mostly in folk rock type setups so it's a little bit more forgiving than in a full on "in yer face" rock setup - I tend to use the Ibanez for that sort of thing because I can play it without thinking about it.
