Need new P-bass pickup

Hello one and all,

I play a 70's fender P bass which sounds sweet and I love it. I also have a old cheap fender P bass copy. I have gigged this in the past - it's been ok at the smaller gigs. But the big gigs with huge PA systems, the bass just sounds like a piece of crap.
I'd like to have this bass as a back uo bass to use at gigs but need to get it up to scratch - so I'm presuming I need a new pickup but I dont really know where to start. I play music that is kind dancy indie disco, so I like to nice punchy tone with a bit of grit. The songs are quite drum and bass led.
Cheers guys,

Josh

I use Wizard & Seymour Duncan in my P-basses. I prefer the traditional 50s / 60s vibe so always opt for something around the Trad or Reissue title. These always seem to improve stock pups. If you want a bit more omph try Seymour Duncan's SPB3 or Wizards 8-4s. I suspect from what you say a traditional pup swap will be plenty good enough though

If you like the sound of your 70s P then a Seymour Duncan SPB1 vintage will get you in a similar ball park http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...pb1_vintage_fo/ I fitted one of these in my Roadworn P for a P/P config and it's a great match for the one already fitted.

When I was looking for a pickup for a 70's p bass guys on recommended a Wizard pickups, either Trad or Thumper

I called Andy at Wizard and we talked about what sound I wanted and he suggested I get the 'Trad' (cost was £50 delivered). Great service and turned out to be exactly what I wanted.

84's are jazz pups ;-)

Not wanting to hijack this thread, and im going to look rather silly, but can someone describe the vintage tone to me. Ive always associated it with warm and mellow but its not something ive ever really looked in to.

I too am after a P pup (as some will already know) and will definitely be getting a Wizard this week, just need to decide which.

Josh, from what ive read a Thumper would suit your style of music.
