1. In South Wales, there are lots of little studios open these days and I've a full time day job anyway so never really wanted to try compete in that market. I've shot video for years at gigs, and always wanted to get better audio (naturally) so have picked up bits and pieces of the years to build a rig that's portable and operational by one or two people. It's more of a hobby than anything, but be nice to get a bit of paid work once in a while. I've put a bit of a hold on it for a while, but after doing a few gigs that I'm hoping should come out quite nicely when I've worked on the post element, I'm thinking of putting some more time (and money) into having a nice setup I can take to most small venues and have up and running without winding up the soundman. So for the last two days, I've taken the following gear wise: * Apple MacBooK Pro 15" running Logic * Focusrite Saffire 26 connected to sounddesk via an 8 way TRS balanced snake * RAID1 firewire external harddisk (to hook up to my iMac when I get home, big plus!) * Borrowed condenser mic and mic stand * Sony DSR-PD150 with Century Optics 16x9 anamorphic lens It was painful, but I carried this all in one go from my flat to the venue in one go. I'm lucky I live central of town, and there's a few venues now popping up. I need to rackmount some of the gear so I'm not using a Doc Martens bag! Anyway, I'm hitting limits and thinking about ways of overcoming them * Need to upgrade to 16 channels at least. Yesterday's gig was an example where there were 4 vocal mics, 2 guitars, 1 bass and mics on the floor tom, rack tom and kick. No overheads as it was a smaller venue and I was still running out of space when combining with the condenser. Natural options are something like a Behringer ADA8000 or a similar interface that I can connect to the Focusrite via ADAT (which I've not tried before). * Need my own condenser mic... intrigued as to whether a shotgun style mic is as effective for this as the usual 'chubby' style I borrowed which is presumably for cab micing most of the time. If I go shotgun, it means I can mount it to my camera (which has a shotgun mount and can supply the phantom power over XLR natively) which gives me a bit more versatility. Most of the time this will be static at the back of the venue by the sound desk however. I was thinking of something like a Rode NTG-1 which comes at about £150. * I'm thinking of getting a 4U rack just to have a bit of space for cables when transporting. However, further down the line is there likely to be any further rack gear that would be beneficial for my rig? It wouldn't generally be set up at home, I just move the HDD to the desktop computer so would only need things that'd be useful for the recording stage. Be interesting if anyone does anything similar and has any advice or ideas that I might not have considered. Thanks!
 2.
Takes 400 and 800 FireWire btw!
I'm guessing woody has a newer Macbook that doesn't have FW at all on it. I was recording on my 15" MBP the other day, using my interface as a passthrough for the harddisk before I remembered I had the FW800 port sitting unused on the side of the laptop! Funny how you forget things are just there. Anyway, to add content.. I'll throw an offer of £80 in. I only need to add inputs to my current rig (Focusrite Saffire 26) as opposed to a full interface, and the ability to only control the inputs in pairs worries me slightly as I'd most likely use it for the drum rigs that can have sporadic micing at best!
 3. It was moved in here. I'm confused, but it's looking like it's sold now so it's no bother
 4. Hi mate, are you asking about a price to see if I would end the auction early or for rules compliance? I read that straight sales need a price, but I did a search for other eBay sales and that didn't seem to come up: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=116845 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=116919 (poster was only advised he should post more often to be part of the community, no mention of prices) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=114825 Apologies if I've misunderstood something somewhere? I'm hesitant to name a price due to the non-working nature, as without knowing what the cause is I'm unable to gauge a value... if it was fully working, it wouldn't be an issue and it'd be a straight sale on here.
 5. This one hurts... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...#ht_1444wt_1002 Alas it's currently in non-working condition, full description of what I know is in the auction. Pics: I also have a Trace Elliot 15" cab that went along nicely with this (plus another cab due to ohmage), but not sure how much of my gear I'm going to let go yet. Kinda sad to officially say goodbye to playing after 15 (almost criminally bad!) years, but I only play one or two shows a year now, and that's all I imagine I'll be doing going forward. Sigh...
 6. I'm now not sure whether I should've posted my Trace V6 ad in For Sale or here now... as Bassassin said, it was the 'post your links here' tagline on the main forum view that made me presume this was the right place for it.
 7. After reading through the thread recent 'whats appropriate for this forum' thread and checking other posts in the Amps/Cabs For Sale forum, I've posted this thread in there instead. Please feel free to close or delete this thread.
 8. Bought a bass from Paul who gave me a great breakdown of the instrument so I knew everything about it before it arrived, as well as lots of good photos, a good price and a fast speedy service. Thanks again.
 9. Not sure if I can make it down yet (November is the beginning of 6 months of hard bills), but if I can is there any interest in me bringing my Trace V6 ?
 10.
How about this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Steinberger-Clone-bu...id=p3286.c0.m14
Ha, fun colour. I actually ended up buying Paul's Hohner he posted earlier in the thread. Still up for seeing more 80s awesomeness tho!
Cant get more eighties than a Kubicki or a Goodfellow....
Someone a few minutes walk from me is selling this : http://cardiff.gumtree.com/cardiff/56/45908956.html seems a pretty sweet deal. Can't stand the headstocks on the Kubickis mind.
 11. It has two necks, therefore deserves two links don't worry about it.
 12. Yeah, that's the one Mr Bassman linked to.. it's awesome isn't it! I've never played fretless so undoubtedly would struggle like a fool as I just tried to play the bottom neck throughout the entire show!
 13.
'80's doubleneck
Sweet Jesus! I could buy two, strap them together and do Cheap Trick the next year!
JOURNEY, it has to be a T-40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See some of these great basses on my post in Gear Porn. Any love for T-40's? Pic of the great man in action. Flat Eric
It's definitely a good looking bass, and would certainly be in my general "I'd buy that!" pile, but I think if I rocked it at the show the reaction would be "Oh, Jay's got a new bass?" rather than the wanted "Holy.. what the hell is he playing?!"
 14.
You can do 80s on a budget: OLP as opposed to Music Man; Washburn as opposed to Status. But if you want something genuinely 80s, then you'd get something Aria, Ibanez or Yamaha for a limited budget. If it has to be headless though, and an iconic design, then a Steinberger/Spirit fits the mould. (No pun intended.)
Yeah the Spirit's embody everything about what I'm looking for, something just 'out there' and completely different to what I usually play. A decent quality clone would be perfect as it's just way out of budget for someone with my abilities/fact it'll probably end up on my wall for ages after the gig!
My 1983 Steinberger is still for sale, but I want £2000.
Hehe, if I get a big raise in the meantime, I'll let you know
Clearly the ultimate 'unmistakable 80s' bass would be a Steiny clone ( a genuine one being way out of your price bracket), although a less obvious but subtle one would be a Fender P lyte or one of the pointy head Fenders of that ilk.
Exactly with you on the clone. I'll have to keep an eye out for the pointier Fenders, but I've never been a huge fan of the P bass 'look'... I'll probably change my mind eventually, I used to have no love for Rickys and now I'd love to own one.
Anything pointy really - you can pick pointy Charvels up for jack sh*t , mostly because they are !!! In your shoes - I'd look to borrow something for a one off. I'm a long way from you or you'd be welcome to borrow my Status. You could consider picking up a hohner B2a , steiny clone. Looks the part and sounds pretty good. Maybe even a jack. You won't get either for a hndred quid BUT if you buy one for twice that or so then sell it on you won't loose a hundred quid and you might even make the price of a few pints.
Haha yeah, I remember lusting over Charvel/Jackson about 12 years ago when I was in my teens... I honestly wouldn't pass the right one up, pointyness is a big 'awesome' factor. I love the sharpness of 80s design, and still will own a Countach 5000... one day. I think you're right about the resale as well, as much as I hate letting stuff go, I'm happy to somehow scrape more pounds into a deal if I think I could make most of it back. http://audiozone.dk/cm/displayimage.php?pi...&fullsize=1 I would love to have this poster!
I have an awesome Westone Quantum which is about as 80`s as it gets. It has the original rifle case and has been a very convenient back up as it takes no room in the car. I might sell it but would be looking for £200. Here's a pic I found online - mine is identical to this
NOW WE'RE TALKING! Look at that beauty! Might just be the camera angle really selling it, but that's awesome. I'll certainly keep your 'maybe sell it' in mind, I've never played a Westone but I know that a lot of people here have owned them in the past. Googling around for the model led me to this : http://media.photobucket.com/image/westone...sc/IMG_1194.jpg . Holy crap, that's the most awesome thing I've ever seen.
my vote for a japanese bass, finished in white preferably with a painted headstock too. this?
I saw a similar bass a few years ago I was umming and arring about, but it was a slighly different model with a gorgeous pointy headstock. Googling led me to this - http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp349/r...zfretless02.jpg - if the body of that was a bit more exciting, had that headstock and was a cooler colour.. I don't think I could say no then!
A Hohner Jack Professional would seem to fit the bill. They crop up for sale quite regularly. I had one before I could afford a proper Status when I was at college.
For some reason, as stated above, I can't get into the non-cricket bat style of headless basses.. I think it's the Steinberger bridge looking out of place on a more traditional body. Maybe it's the case of not seeing 'the right one' yet tho.
 15. Heh yeah to pay for the Music Man or Status, I think I'd have to sell my Warwick.. possibly my Trace V6 too! When it comes to the headlesses, I should've pointed out I'm not really a fan of the 'non-cricket bat variety, I always thought the headless look only suited such a crazy body! Altho, I have to be honest... the second I saw the Steinberger in Bill and Ted's as a kid, I knew I had to have one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3KJBOqSjC0
 16. I do like those RBX's, but that guy has no feedback. "Everyone has to start out somewhere" but low price and no feedback would set off my spidey senses.
 17. Hey guys, been a while since I've been on here. Despite not having an active band at the moment, there's a tradition every 6 months at our local to do a 'Stars in their Eyes' night, which is undoubtedly the highlight of the year, and a bunch of us are going to do 80s stallwarts - JOURNEY. In the video for Separate Ways, he's clearly rocking a Steinberger/Hohner headless, and I'm itching at the idea of leaving the Warwick at home for the night and rocking something equally... 80s. I saw Andy's this (not a fan of the body shape itself mind). So open to ideas of what to go for, at a worryingly low budget (so second hand, naturally.. for authenticity and wallet reasons!) that will look the part and not suck so much it gets thrown to the back of the cupboard and never played again. Feel free to whore your own awesome 80s axes for inspiration, and if you have something that fits the bill in my price range (really not much more than the £100 Andy wanted for his unfortunately) feel free to mention it (presumably that's allowed?)
 18. I'm guessing you've only listed the basses that are in your price range? I would look in the For Sale threads here and see what kind of instruments go for your budget, and see if the shops around you have any of those, or similar. As a guide, I paid £150 for my Ibanez EDB600, and resold it for a similar amount a few years later.. the RRP was something like £500. My Warwick from here cost me £600, and has an RRP of £1100 or so. £150 won't get you a great bass brand new, but it could get you something really decent second hand. Every single piece of equipment I've bought, I've bought pretty much blind and online/second hand locally. Bar one really bad purchase, which I should've seen coming, I've had really good luck. I've also got pretty small hands and find the necks of Ibanez styled basses a lot more comfortable than a Fender style neck, if that helps.
 19. Ah that makes a lot of sense, thanks for the info. It's a shame the V6 is missing some of the features (and I prefer the style of the V4/V8 too) but nothing to particularly worry about I'm sure.

 21.
Isn't it hilarious the trails an innocent scamster leaves around t'internet nowadays with MySpace, Facebook, Bebo & the like
None nearly so dumb as: http://www.bestleech.com/forum/showthread....10821#post10821 Allen, as you're still reading this.. if you're going to pirate albums don't do it with a name that's easily recognisable. Anyone who has his address, feel free to pass it along to the usual interested parties, he'll at least get a Cease and Desist from them unless they fancy proving a point and sticking him with a nice big fine
 22. Haha Nash, I actually searched by your username as I'd had a feeling you'd have made a post here today You kept the MXR off when you played yeah? I had the EQ flat on the Trace and had a slight bass/treble boost and mid cut on that in the loop. Head had bright/deep switches on and the midshift was off. I need to spend a good amount of time where I can play through the rig loud so I can work out where and what I want to EQ etc. When Veen was linechecking through it, even at the bar my clothes were vibrating. I knew then I'd made the right choice! edit: If anyone has a history behind the V6 I'd be really interested.. ie the V4 and V8 are more obviously little/big brother with the 2 gain / compressor / half power options and a near-identical look, whereas the V6 seems a different beast altogether with none of those features and a completely different design. And if anyone has a PDF manual, it'd be appreciated as the TE website has a V4 and V8 manual, but no V6.
 23. Thanks for the advice guys.. I will be buying a new cab in the New Year (so expect a thread for advice!) but it's nice to know I can have a few practices with my current cab before then, as well as cab share at gigs when we're playing again.
 24. I've finally got my v6 and was happy that I wouldn't be able to run it through my 8ohm cabs separately due to it only having a 2ohm/4ohm switch, but then I read the v8 manual which says:
The OUTPUT IMPEDANCE switch allows the power stage to be set to drive either 2 or 4Ωloads as indicated. These ratings are the preferred nominal impedance speaker loads that should be connected. However, it is OK to drive slightlyhigher value loads, i.e. driving an 8Ω cabinet with the 4Ωsetting, without too much perceived difference in power transfer.
That seems to indicate I would be OK running a single 8ohm cab on it.. is this the same for the v6? does anyone have a v6 manual cos it's absent on the TE website. Cheers.
