1. All the best with his new job then!
2.
I'm glad Bakithi Kumalo never listened to Jeff. Or Les Claypool for that matter...
Baktihi has always been my favourite fretless player. What a talent.
3. Put them in a studio though and it will soon become clear that one is an el-crappo P bass and the other is a Wal.
4. Wait? Jeff Berlin isn't a huge fan of fretless basses? Whatever next, someone telling me bears sh*t in the woods?
5. When I was about 15 I heard Stuart Hamm playing a Kubicki and from that moment, bright, modern tones were it for me. Getting into Geddy Lee's Wal sound also affirmed by love of a good honky midrange sound. I don't think I've ever left that, to be honest. But I like to hear my basses naturally, without layering effects or fiddling with EQ's. As such, I choose instruments based on their incredible tone and just make do!
6. Over the years I've had a fewbasses I've been really attached to and ended up selling them in the end, usually on the provision that if I really looked hard enough I could probably find another one. If a new bass inspires you, thats great. Nothing wrong with keeping your old gear either. I'd rather a bass be used and enjoyed rather than just sitting in a case. Mind you, I'm struggling to give all my basses the play time they deserve lately. I can never decide whether to go for the Status, the Kubicki or the ACG...
7. You hear of people trying to source old strings like Superwounds. I wonder if they actually use any when they get hold of them? I remember someone a couple of years ago selling loads of packs of Trace Elliot strings, which were apparently made years and years ago by Status Graphite and rebranded by Trace Elliot!
8.
How much does this bass weigh? Cheers
Not a great deal. I'll stick it on some scales when I get a chance and see.
9. Yeah, they're small frets but I've never noticed any wear on the two CV Jazz basses I've had (mind you, one was new and the other nearly new). I wouldn't let it bother you.
10. Playing for 9 years now. No real highs or lows, but I feel like I am really getting back into playing after a couple of years where I've been a bit lazy and haven't played as much as normal.
11. Yum yum, a couple of stunners!
12. I wonder how much it would cost to get him to build another of these:
13. June 2011, Geoff. I'll be ordering a job lot of string for it from Status soon I suspect, and getting it out of the case this afternoon for a ditty.
14. He has the tone favoured by most pub covers band players.
15.
2) I don't want to. There are a number of people on youtube (you know who you are) who have copied every single hammer-on, pop, gliss, slap, whatever that gives Mark his very distinctive style. These bedroom/dining room/living room warriors have taken his style and added absolutely nothing of their own to it, even going so far as to use the same guitars, amps, effects, strings as Mark.
And so what? I've got a Status Series II, I occasionally play with .30 guage strings, I have a Mark King signature amp and I love playing Level 42 stuff. But thats not everything I play and I doubt it's everything the youtube guys who do Level 42 playalongs do either. But if you can, why not? After all, I've found the kit that Mark uses to be extremely good. I can assure you it's not just used for Level 42 stuff!
16. Great drummer but I've never heard him playing bass. I remember him playing guitar with that sh*t 'Murderdolls' band along with that nonce from Static X. I think I'd rather he stuck to the drums and Slipknot.
17. Dave is an awesome player, good stuff.
18. Go for it. I have been hammering my Mark King licks and Level 42 tunes relentlessly since I got my Status Series II. I've always loved slap though.
19.
I know guys who play stadiums who can slap, tap, sweep pick and improv jazz till the cows come home - but they can grab a pick and play 8th notes too... it all MUSIC at the end of the day.
This is what always makes me laugh when the 13 year old pipe up with comments like "l0l Vitor W00ten is zo fastttt...but itz all techniques...whr is THU GR00VE?" Because we all know Wooten could knock out 8ths on the root note all day long to a better standard than his detractors. He's actually so good he's went past such plodding. Sure, he can do it, but he can do so much more too.
20. I've always loved Claire's Song by the Yellowjackets, but that has been about the only tune of theirs that has grabbed me. A shame, as it is a slice of really cool, catchy fusion.
21. Because I don't have a fretless anymore. After I had accepted the cost of my Series II, I decided that selling it for cash isn't really worth it so I'd float it out there on the chance that the right fretless comes along and just keep enjoying it in the meantime.
22. bump, still thinking about trades for a fretless...
