No - it's because you haven't grasped the fact no piece of wood is the same as the next. So whilst there are subtle differences in the tones that demonstrated in that video, if you built those same basses again, using the same type of woods, they could still sound different again to the ones in the video - because wood, even of the same species, aren't identical. So in short, this video doesn't teach us anything - the sample size would have to be much larger to be able to start drawing any observations of scientific significance. Besides, even the electronics aren't consistent - there are tolerances in the electronic components - and the pickups are likely to be scatter wound... which obviously means they aren't going to be same, even if manufactured to the same spec.

Well that's a bit of a whataboutism. An auditorium is dealing with sound waves. The output from an electric bass is electrical.

In reality, you could string up any old table top with a bridge, a set of tuners, some frets, a couple of single coils (spaced like a jazz) - and it would sound within shooting distance of any other jazz bass. Would be a bit of a **** to play though.

I have. The only thing that I can think you are referring to is where I have written "The rest of it? Nonsense." - That is in relation to the variable that is wood. Change whatever you want about the wood - present it as "tone wood", whatever.. it's all a nonsense. In that you can choose whatever wood you want, specify it to come from any area of the tree, any species etc... and you still wouldn't be able to reliably predict it's effect. There's far too many variables within the wood itself to be a fair experiment. There is no control or fixed variables (the very thing upon which experiments from which you draw conclusions must have). And thats before we move onto the preamps, pickups, hardware, neck joints... which I haven't even commented upon because the thread is about wood. Or at least I thought it was.

Depending upon where abouts in the tree the wood is taken from, it will have a different density. The environment in which the tree grows, influences structure further. Wood by its very nature, can not be the same - each slab is unique. The only way to hear how a bass will sound is to play it when it's built. The rest of it? Nonsense. Next.

GB 212 Neox is not a bad shout to be fair.

My EBS rig is 2 x 2x10s... (actually, it's 4 2x10s) - but the combined size of the two cabs is quite a bit taller than the 4x10 if fitting into a boot in in play. 78cm vs 69cm

I knew you'd get sick of the weight of that 410! The 212 is my favourite neo cab from EBS if that your thing. That selenium tweeter is the secret sauce of the cab, really makes that top end ping and is a monster for slap. Dont go for 2 EBS 1x12 cabs. I've always found that they fart out. If you are struggling with the car boot - then the 212 from EBS probably not going to help - it's just 8cm shorter in height.

Its quite a small budget for getting something that will do well at a gig - but the ICE power amp in the Harley Benton 300b is giving your a decent enough foundation in the power amp department. (Found in pretty much all the 300w class D offerings). If you can get Peavey BW cab (1x15 at 4ohm enabling you to throw all 300w at it), that would probably be recommendation for a 1 cab solution. I know you asked for combo... but you know, throwing it out there.
