  1. What are you implying? It doesn't matter how crap the strings are, because they're for a Rickenbacker?
  2. Worth it! My back thanks me. Thhp!
  3. *SOLD* KLUSON Slotted-Screw 70s 4-String Bridge *£20 Posted* 70s-style Kluson 4-string, 5-hole Fender-fit bridge with slotted screw saddles. Good condition. Hard to find in the UK with the 70s-type slotted saddle screws, this one was imported from the States. Fits the standard 5-screw Fender bridge pattern. Good for a 70s Jazz or P project. I'd like £20 for it, which includes postage to your door. Payment via Bank Transfer please.
  4. 'Precision Bass' is also 'Biceps Iron Àss'.
  5. Plywood is strong and stable, but tends to be heavy.
  6. Call it what you like - it can't hear you.
  7. My Jazz body is Paulownia and I love it because it's light. The bass weighs 7lbs in total. Choose something light, easy to work and easy to finish. Tone considerations don't enter into it, there aren't any. If you do choose Paulownia be aware it's quite porous and needs grain filling, dependent on the finish you want.
  8. No need, it's just down the road from Frisby-in-the-Nude.
  9. Sold a signal splitter to Sid in a very smooth deal. He is a fast payer with great comms and no issues. Would happily deal with again any time.
  10. Stickingit-on-the-Knob is a small village in Gloucestershire.
  11. *SOLD* 'Vintage' Brand VJ74 Reissued Jazz Bass Don't really want to sell this, but I have two Jazz basses and only need one. So I'm keeping my Jazz Bitsa for stupid sentimental reasons - it's the first bass I put together from parts - but it doesn't sound as good and doesn't play as well as this does. So my loss will be your gain. 'Vintage' is one of Trevor Wilkinson's brands, he of Fret King et al. The pickups, electrics and hardware on this VJ74 are all Wilkinson parts as stock and are of high quality. It's all original except for the colour - it was gloss black and it's been refinished in white, with a white headstock. It plays really nicely and sound-wise it’s right up there with the competition. I’ve owned and played Fender Jazzes and various Jazz clones from other makers and the VJ74 absolutely holds its own. Absolutely the epitome of what a Jazz Bass should sound like, with a nice growl on tap if you want it. I don't have scales, but I'd estimate that it's between 9 and 9.5lbs in weight - not a super-lightweight, but not a boat anchor by any means, and it balances well on the strap. Spec is here: https://www.jhs.co.uk/brands/vintage/vintage-basses/vintage-reissued-vj74-bass-gloss-black It's wearing Rotosound strings in the pics, but I've restrung it with brand new Fender 7250M nickel-plated steel rounds, which sound great. RRP is around £250-320 and I'm looking for £125 for a quick sale, which includes postage via an appropriate method to your atelier or dwelling. I will PM despatch details and an ETA to the buyer and the item will be well-packed. So if you want a good, workmanlike Jazz Bass in your armoury and you're not too fussed about having an 'F'-decal on your headstock, take advantage of my insanity and get in, before I change my mind! My feedback is here. Now Sold. I thank you!
  12. Actually that was a genuine assumption on my part. You didn't say how many you auditioned. Why? How many did you audition? You know what, don't bother - I really don't want to know. You're hard work, you're no fun and your thread is actually making me lose the will to live. 😩 *Unfollow*
  13. You had 60 excellent drummers apply to be a dep..? Either that was (1) the most remarkable drumming coincidence of all time, (2) my notion of what constitutes an excellent drummer is very different from yours, or (3) you inhabit a completely new and exciting realm of reality and over-the-counter drug availability... Pip! Pip!
  14. Well yes, it's averages. Some have been good but most just aren't. But I don't go out of my way to see them. Maybe my pub-band standards are unreasonably high, somehow. A good band needs a good drummer, and they are few and far between. In fact, all band members need to be at least competent and the chances of this happening are slim, realistically. Especially as most pub bands tend to be amateur.
  15. I'm not sure how many pub bands I've seen over the years have had a 'gigging BCer' in them. Not many I bet, especially as BC hasn't existed for the 40 years or so I've been watching pub bands. In any case, the fact remains that most pub bands simply aren't that good.
  16. I was quoting @Al Krow 's post where he referred to 'top rated live bands'. He didn't say anything about them being covers bands, though. At least I don't think so - I can't be bothered to scroll up and check quite frankly - this thread is starting to make my warts bleed.
  17. I used to think the same, right up until the time I soberly listened to a recording of myself playing while pıssed. In the 70s I did a lot of gigs while stoned, but magnesium bat field gazump hula hoop de Gaulle... daffodil.
  18. Sure, I'll misread your posts and misquote you, like I do everyone else - what makes you any different? It makes these threads more interesting. God knows they need titivating somewhat. And I'm quite sure people do like great top-rated live bands with excellent bass players, but you tend not to see them playing in pubs that much... Yer average pub band tends to be tolerable at best. However, they can be improved via the judicious consumption of alcohol, whereupon Sid from Accounts can almost become Freddie Mercury. Almost.
  19. I'm not despondent and I'm not suffering from an existential crisis - I'm just realistic. I like what I do, I like my band, I like gigging. Maybe our situation is slightly different in that we don't do covers and we don't exclusively play pub gigs. But you can't expect every punter to be totally cőck-a-hoop because of what is, at the end of the day, a random bloke in a band playing bass. People go to pubs for different reasons. Some people like live bands, some people tolerate them and some people walk out. Fair enough. You've never played in Deptford, have you? And I take issue with your contention that almost all live bands have excellent bass players. Not according to THIS observer, they haven't. And if I brightly addressed our typical audience with the words, 'Come on, peeps! Bass is just GREAT!' I'd probably get a smack in the mouth, and deservedly so.
  20. As usual I try various different basses in a new band, there generally being one that is more suitable.... Singer: Why have you got all those different bass guitars? They sound exactly the same.
  21. The stock pick up is a beaut. Play the bass for a good while before you throw the baby out with the bathwater.
