For those counting the pennies, the price of this amp has been reduced from £1545 to £1399 on Ashdown's own website.

To be fair, I bought that horrible Darkglass Microtubes 900 V2 thing for £1,100 and it sounded like a billion insects trapped in a Kilner jar.  I could only play it if I had a seven string bass, long hair and wore shorts on stage.  £300 more gets me Ashdown quality, sound and customer service. Might not be such a bad thing after all….

From what I understand the BF 10” range are focused more on upper bass rather than the deeper frequencies so as others have said probably the room not working well with the cab.

Yeah this is a good point, could be just that. I’m going to chalk it up to crap room acoustics rather than throwing the ABM from the top floor window….

The guitarists were clearly too loud.....

I'd say this was a connection problem i.e Amp to Cab or Bass to Amp comes to mind

Could be. I changed every cable I could!

Well it’s not entirely a baseless assumption. I gigged my MAG810 for several years, and have now gigged my BF Big Twin 2 for several years, and the difference is night and day. Granted, the post I was referring to was talking about a BF 6x10 but I’d be very very surprised if that cab wasn’t better than a MAG810

I used to gig a Ampeg 610 and the Barefaced is much better ( and lighter!)

I'm beginning to think it might be my ears!

I had a gig when I was getting no power through, but it turns out that there was something wrong with my pedalboard, the VU meter wasn't even moving.

Yeah I thought this too, but the VU was showing a healthy input. Just the output is disappointing. I'm hoping it was just a dodgy venue...!

  5. Speaking of the H word, for the first time with my ABM600 I was distinctly unimpressed last night.  600 EVO IV in to Barefaced 610.   Was a largeish village hall, with a good proper stage. I found I had to get the ABM to the three quarters volume position and reallly up the bass eq to make any impact in the hall and even then, there was no heft, was very thin and tinny.  I probably found the absolute limitations of this rig volume and heft wise before needing the support of the PA, so raher disappointed. Need a good gig with this now to restore my faith in it.

is it not a bit weird though that the shure transmitters have the instrument cable coming out of the top rather than the bottom?

Turn it upside down. Then it's coming out of the bottom.

The metal belt clip is reversible.

Shure Glxd16 for me too with the added bonus of a built in tuner to free up space on your board.

At the risk of sounding boring, another vote for the GLXD16. Great battery life from the rechargeable batteries, very good sound quality and I've not noticed any drop outs.

Unless it sounds significantly different, what would you be achieving? If you’re in need of more headroom, then you’d be more likely to go for a much cheaper, used ABM1200 wouldn’t you?

I’m in this position but the 1200 is just two x 600 power units that can’t be bridged for a single cab and I’m running a single 4ohm 610 so the 1200 is of no use to me. 750w of Ashdown ABM sound in a single power section is of great interest though!

WRT the price, there’s a couple of things that may be playing out here.

    1. Do ashdown see this as replacement for the ABM 1200? The literature states “An increasing number of players have been asking if we can bridge the dual output sections of our ABM 1200 head. The new ABM EVO V answers that need for more power and dynamics.”

If so 750w doesn’t seem powerful enough

    2. where are they manufactured? I’d suspect it’s currently uk. If popular enough will they move production to prc & if so will the price come down?

    3. Ashdown shop is pretty damn expensive anyway. Once the amp gets to the suppliers will the price decrease?

can anyone remember the price when Abm 600 evo iv was released?

All excellent points.  I agree 750 doesn’t seem that big a step up, especially as the RM800 is advertised at 800w (let’s not get in to the class D vs Class A/B..) but I love this nonetheless. I’m sure the price will come down to around the £1,100 mark and then we’ll still need to decide if it’s worth it.  BUT price aside, I’d want to know the differences between that and the EVO IV.  It’s going to be very difficult to beat the EVO IV in my opinion, but I love the look of this and I’m very tempted!

I'm now using my Supertwin with an Ashdown RM800 Evo2.

It's now the only bass head I own and it seems to go with the cab very nicely.

Exactly this too. Or sometimes a ABM600 EVOIV.  I use the RM also with the 210s and the 610s. Ashdowns and Barefaced just seem to work great together.

I couldn't get the same match with my previous Markbass or Darkglass heads.

Without doubt the best headphone practice amp I’ve ever tried. The previous holder of that title was the Phil Jones BigHead, which will now be up for sale I suspect. Bravo, Boss!

Agree completely. I was using an Ashdown Tonepocket which is still a great bit of kit but these headphones are just brilliant. I like the spatial or whatever it is effect and the sound is very natural.

It’s got me looking at the new Boss Katana practice amps too…..

Anyone else noticed interference in the signal from the green VU light on the RM800 evo 2? Mines been back to Ashdown with this twice and has come back the same. It’s very faint and only audible if the treble is cranked right up but is there.

I have when using headphone only, but not when it's connected to a cab.

However, the helix's power supply drives me mad. Too large, cant swap with a regular 9v spare, and it doesnt (really) work with power packs.

Are we talking about the Stomp? I have mine mounted on a Metro 24 with a SY1, BB Bass preamp and Shure GLXD wireless receiver (doubles as tuner), all powered by a 1 Spot CS6. works perfectly...

Why is there a (I think) Green LED behind the VU as well?

What is that for? Or is it just for flashy nonsense?

Ah you went for the RM?  Yeah the green light is fine and the red is interesting if you get there! I also don't like the notched volume control and find that I have to balance the input gain to compensate.
