Just out of interest.... genuine question, who actually manufactured the first ERB?
Probably...and this isnt conclusive....If you are talking about a REALLY ERB instrument,Schack in 92. 10 string as a one off, given to Jonas Hellborg,to celebrate their 10th anniversary, But Bill Conklin's been putting out extra string 7s for quite a few years and made the 1st production 9 for Bill Dickens...Carl Thompson made the first 6. The race is on right now for the 13 (rumour is Baudins nearly finished,I think Cary Nordstrand has made the P/U's,and Gerry Goodmans able to make the strings, unless SIT are gonna make a custom set). Thats a low G sharp folks. I heard one guys got an 11 on the go in the UK which should be finished by now if the word is true, and Jims building another 9 for someone. THIS ISNT TOPIC
 2. Negative effect on Bass? Probably Leo Fender,he started the problem.
 3.
1,Enough of what i do like, back on topic. For me any bassist who plays 7,9 10 + string basses. 5 stringers i get, but i feel people who need that many strings might be better suited to another instrument perhaps piano? 2,so for me any combination of solo 'bass' with ultra high speed tapping artificial harmonics which you often see on ERB's. 3,If you define bass by the frequency range and the role it plays musically surely these players are no longer bassists in the true sense but occupy a new role. Before any shoots me down in flames i appreciate the skill of people like dood and ARGH who can play these beasts but if i wanted to be Hendrix i would play a Stratocaster not a jazz.
1....Agreed,But my back cant take the weight of a piano,I dont really know how to play one,and more to the point,I dont want to,bar 'treating' the Piano, you kinda have only one way of playing it to create the sound,as far as I hear theres many ways of playing a note on a Bass guitar, even many places. I feel the NEED to have that many notes, because, well 2 & 3/4 to 3ish octaves is kinda boring, and I dont understand why having extra range, upon a single instrument,is such an issue...if it is an issue at all,for anyone. Maybe its a visual one, most people havent played one,or are capable,Im still learning. 2.....I havent seen/heard that at all,And I dont know anyone that does, save Bill Dickens, unless, like most people, you have made your opinion after watching that bloody Carbonne/Baudin NAMM Jam/SuperMario vids. I prefer the Al Caldwell vids,Hes taken the courage to film himself at the VERY beginning of playing his MIDI equipped 11 string. I see far more hand shandy ego crap and plain old stoopid done on 4s,if pootubes to be our benchmark of evidence. 3,yeah we go higher, but we also go lower, pretty much all of us ERBists have EADG,so where does that leave us? Ive had this out with musicians, that we are only linked to the Bass guitar,by really only 2 things.those being, scale (Around/under/above 34") and tuning. I have to agree, given the range we are capable of we could walk out and leave Bass behind,if we felt like it,But I dont*....maybe as far as saying 'we' dont, that Jaquo guy tunes his 4 string to SUB bass depths,IS he Bassier than you or anyone, because his range, technique and knowledge limit him so he only plays a 4? (of course not...to think that would be dumb)..But he feels closer to ERBists than usual Bass players. I'll say this, pretty much all of us started on a 4. Like this guy,but we wanted more http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1EcxC5AgnPU *Im lying. I dont play Bass,I play music.
 4.
Samson Airline wireless - eats batteries for fun.
Yeah,I thought that of mine too,the transmitters ok,but the receiver,to be frank needs to be plugged in. I swear Im keeping Duracell in research money.
 5. Martin Ain,of Celtic Frost had a custom Gibson V. Black with White plate, looked good onstage. Lefty as well. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=L5prpJMrWhs
 6. Where is the venue?
 7.
I wasn't joking ... is that Up North Speak for 20 quid?
Ive seen the 20 spots....
 8. Im in the process of selling...stripping back my gear. Its a balance around 'need vs want',and I tend to side with need. You have to ask the question are you buying it because it looks/sounds nice,or are you buying it because it is needed. I find to solve the problem is learning the true meaning of minimalism. If you want to be poor, buy a house..if you have one already, then buy another one, only bigger.....
 9. I gave the Dr a lift, and he gave me a few glass's of squash, and space to 'Get it off my chest'. Top Bloke...Top Moggie.....Top P Bass.
 10. Switching the Amp on......
 11.
I love your quote "is this a fake?" lol, Its a LUSH bass, I wouldnt change it for the world. Its so light for a 'ray its untrue.
Usually I book a Chiro ap when I look at a Ray....Its almost fabled, written for generations to come.. "And lo,twas seen and written,a Stingray that did noteth cripple the spine upon its owner, but played like a Stingray as was true" (You lucky git )
 12. Edit, the guy with the 9 string, HILARIOUS. (meaning your funny, not mocking your ability/aircraft carrier) Cheers fella. I loved your Balsawood Stinger that weighed as much as a soggy Wafer.
 13. "And to Russ* for bringing me home , where we had a fiddle with the rest of my basses and put the world to rights for an hour or two." How much have you had Dave? *Ross......wrong Vowel Carol
 14.
Dead spots can strike any bass any time unless its graphite. Thats the nature of wood. Take it back.
Graphite can and does have deadspots too, they just aint as pronounced as that say of a Fender P,or they are not in the range of an even 12 tone scale (meaning they may be sharper/Flatter than a tempered note). The phenomena,is linked to headstock size/weight,though how much,I cant be sure. On Subject. Custom builders are there to build an instrument that is functional and useable to the specs you require,if its not both then a good luthier will just trash the instrument and start again if you are unhappy with any aspect that cant be rectified/modified/replaced/fixed. Jims deal with me is ,If you aint happy with it,and I cant fix that...We start again. Thing is,people that order an instrument, just,at the beginning, dont really know what they want, they know what they like or want to sound like, and like a shape or style......its THEN the Luthiers aid to help them realise that vision in its 3D form. The Thing I dont see or really understand,is spending the amount on a custom Bass,to just Choose a Maple/Alder body,Rosewood/Maple neck, and a solid colour, when you have a wealth of opportunity,to do something different. A lot of people get held onto the belief that "This sound comes from THAT wood" or such and such uses this on their instrument, and that is the reason they sound like.... When it sadly isnt true.
 15. If you like it,buy it.
 16. The question,is based upon several factors, and what you personally are looking for. Build quality,Tone,Look, weight,in no perticular order, they all are factors in what 'We' as players are demanding from 'Them' the luthiers.
 17.
Good idea. I wonder if they are very well padded though? I have a regular 10 string.
Regular 10 eh? They are quite padded,if you want them to be,you can get uberswish leather and genuine skin insides, soft interiors (like buckskin etc) If you are a Vegan your gonna baulk, but You can have such an exclusive looking case, zipped, waterproof and made to your specs. If you get TOTALLY stuck,pm me.....Im thinking of moving into leatherwork.
 18. My lots been trying to get on the bill,we have had the word that 'Scouts'* have been watching us and favourable reviews have been passed on,so who knows...next year. * Not the small, green wearing ,Bobajob kind.
 19.
Thanks for the tips so far guys but I am definitely after a soft case/gig bag I can sling over my shoulder as I already have a hard case for it.
Get out into the country, and check out any Game,Fishing,or Gun shops, they do soft cases to fit rod/weapon size. D0 you have a regular 10 or a grand 12?
 20. Im not allowed to play onstage with anything less than 6 now,Low Bs are invaluable, and the high C...wellllll...you can take it or leave it,But I use it alot, positionally speaking, its better than running up and down the neck ALL night, and I find my fretting hands less knackard after 3hrs onstage.Chords sound better. Thing is cost (its an extra string, more cash, you are in education, and times are tight) Its bigger (Can your hands cope) scale (I use a 35" scale, and trust me after years of Fender P usage it feels right weird) 6 IS WAAAYYYY hard, compared to 4,its hard compared to 5.......More strings greater range, more versitility, visually its impressive, but you will find utter dicks that think "Oh man,he plays a 6 so he must over play" or "He must be a brilliant player,He's got a 6" Both scenerios are opposite ends of the coin, sadly people still use their eyes rather than they're ears to judge a persons instrument choice.... So where do I think you should go? For safetys sake 5,YOU WILL NEED A LOW B,in modern music, rock, indie, whatever its become essential,it also rattles windows, and hits you in the gut. Best thing about 6 is you can play classical pieces, cello,Piano etc...even classical guitar parts, and offer a greater bandwidth of support to your band,or other musicians, having another plus octave in your arsenal is always a good thing..... AHHH SCREW IT GET A 6 AND TELL THE WORLD TO BLOW!!! How much cash you got?
 21. Peel it off,and use some medical swabs to get the residue off. Shouldnt harm the paintwork surface.
 22.
With all due respect - that's nonsense. Sure, EVH & others popularised those techniques at the time, but 25 years on, it's widely viewed as nothing more than a cheesy 80s fad, and is as inherently dated as ra-ra skirts, Level 42, mullets, pointy headstocks, Floyd Rose w@nk bars & shark-tooth inlays! The 80s were a time of total cultural excess - and as a result, the music of the era overdosed on ego, flamboyance, & facile flash histrionics. There's always the possibility that popular culture's obsession with recycling itself will bring that all back - but that will be in the name of lazy moneymaking, rather than the advancement of creative musicianship. J.
Nope you are talking about aesthetics,Im talking about technique....and seeing as Tapping is becoming a required technique on some gigs, and has nothing to do with the examples of 'fads' you listed, although it was around and 'popular' at the time of the 80s. I understand people not liking change.
 23.
Beg to differ. In 1951 Leo Fender changed the world of popular music.
And DIDNT he keep changing the instrument...
 24.
Apologies, i must have misunderstood. Although you say that the techniques are at their limit, how about playing slap bass tastefully? Although this borders on musicality versus technique.1 I agree with a previous poster that i think it's calling for change for change sake! I think that some people believe (not you Argh, or anyone in particular, i agree this isn't personal) innovation means 'bigger/better/faster/stronger'.2 My point, Argh, about your initial post saying "Seeing as nothing new,or at least ear catching,is being made, this is bad", is that it is a completely subjective. If there was a massive sweeping movement of new arts and music, but you didn't like it, you wouldn't agree that it was a phenomenon. I believe there is some amazing music coming out at the moment, as Ped said earlier, but you instantly shot that down by saying "list it........didn't think so". Whats the point in us listing it when you clearly wouldn't agree!?3 I also think that true modern musical innovation hasn't ever resulted from the invention or radical physical change of an instrument (in the common sense of the word)! Again, exciting music is about the whole, not the individual parts. Si
1,Yes... 2,Thankyou for being clear 3,Who,are they doing anything different? Playing well is ALWAYS good,be it Zender or Chancellor,or Martine,or B-War,but is ANYONE breaking new ground? Even Ferrett said that its a problem not just in Bass but in music in general. 4,Eddie Van Halen, popularizing tapping and superstrats changed guitar design for good (Yes you will always have Les Pauls and 335s etc etc) I see alot of Sheehans ideas around.....and Steinberger's cricket bat.the Active phenom.... Its still E when you play an E,but I just think the only way to develop now is to develop the instrument....styles and techniques come and go,like fashion(80s slapola,Sheehans Tapping),as do types of instrument....but standards change...and as Ped says,groove..or feel is unquantifiable, you have it or you dont. but thats personal, the instrument will change...
 25.
In what way is a bass not a guitar?
As I wrote,in the public eye, there isnt much difference.
