I've seen them a few times and they're amazingly tight as a band. Funny too. In 1988, before I knew who they were, I was at a comics convention with a mate of mine in London, and we saw an 'old guy' walking around in a NoMeansNo t-shirt. Fast forward to a month later and we see the band for the first time and the 'old guy' was none other than the bass player!

  4. Yep, I remember 'London Calling' registering on my bass radar when I was a kid. As well as 'Peaches' by The Stranglers. And the fuzzy raw sounding bass on Discharge's first album (I heard that at youth club when I was 13 - completely blew me away)...
  5. I can remember liking the theme tune to 'Space 1999' alot, especially the bass. What actually convinced me to try and play the bass was Bauhaus, because at the time (1986) I was a refugee from heavy metal and I hadn't heard a fretless before. That said, I didn't take up playing the bass until 1988 - the first tunes I learnt being 'Hurry Up Harry' (Sham 69) and 'Warriors of Henghis Khan' (Bad News)...

  8. What about the Squier Standard P-Bass Special? Are they any good? I saw an all-black/pewter-like one a few months ago. And are there any guesses as to whether the Squier CV 60's Jazz will be released in something other than white?

  11. Perhaps it may be better just to have - if one doesn't exist already - a thread dedicated to bass players who might not be known to others and may be of interest? No-one is ever going to agree on who is better or best or worst because it's wildly subjective.
  12. I play everything by ear, so I wouldn't know exactly. Try listening to Mad Professor & Jah Shaka (either their own stuff or what they've co-operated on). That might help - lots of it can be found on YouTube.

  22. The bass player from Desmond Dekker's band once borrowed my old cheapy fretless bass for a gig when I was at poly'. He actually quite liked it and was a nice bloke in general.
  23. If you can find an older Wesley bass going cheap, that might be a better option. I have one (it's the pink thing in my avatar) that I stripped back to the wood and generally tinkered with and it's not all that bad. It does feel a bit light and skinny, but then again so did my old Aria Pro II
  24. I think it's a shame if anyone you admire dies. Perhaps musicians dying just taps into you more if you're a musician too. Quite alot of bands I like seem to have a quite high mortality rate. Stiv Bator (Lords of the New Church), Razzle (Hanoi Rocks), Johnny Thunders (The New York Dolls), to name but a few. The comedian Denis Leary has done some funny stuff about the [i]wrong[/i] musicians dying: 'Every time you hear about some famous guy overdosing on drugs, it's always some really talented guy. It's always like Len Bias, or Janis Joplin, or Jimi Hendrix, or John Belushi. You know what I mean? The people you wanna have overdose on drugs never would! Like Motley Crue would never f*cking overdose man, never! ' 'Stevie Ray Vaughan is dead, and we can't get Jon Bon Jovi onto a f*cking helicopter!'
