1. Hi everyone, I'm looking at a lot of upright grooves sampled in hip-hop music as it's far more my bag than the jazz playing and also a great vein of playing to be able to execute these days in my opinion. Does anyone have any suggested specific tracks that use sampled upright bass to check out? I've got a fair list already but the more the better! Also the less obscure the better. Thanks for the suggestions. B
2. 2007 Overwater Perception Pro Deluxe 5 String & Overwater Hiscox Hardcase For sale PICK UP ONLY from Bristol (Or nearby) for £1050 Would also accept a trade for an all-original MIA Fender Precision 4 string in good condition and take the difference in cash - I am moving this bass to free up some money so a trade bass in the region of £600-700 would be great. Hi guys, Been under some substantial financial strife lately and so I've decided to move on my workhorse bass that I've relied on for several years now. Active 35" Scale with the 3 band Overwater Pre Amp, XLR out, locking jack, bolt-on neck design, cocobolo top and the older-styled bridge design. I have spoken with Overwater about the fact that the control plate does not match some of the spec and they have confirmed that it was built with some extra features as per the buyer's original designs and that none of them are retrofitted (also said that they don't mind confirming this for anyone who was concerned). There is some slight damage to the body in places but they are purely cosmetic and the result of a bass being used incredibly regularly quite literally all over the world by myself on a load of gigs and sessions. Unfortunately I will have to have it picked up as I'd hate to see any damage happen to a bass I am struggling to part with. Genuine offers only please. Cheers, Ben.
3. BUMP for one last outrageous price drop to £215 posted to UK mainland or £200 picked up from the centre of town.
4. Still no takers at such a low price? Boo! Still available for £265 posted within the UK or a £250 pickup from central Bristol.
5. Still available, dropped the price but the sale/trade value won't let me update it. Just looking for a quick sale!
6. ITEM HAS BEEN SOLD. Sale Price: £215 posted to UK mainland via courier or £200 collected from central Bristol. Selling my Avalon U5 to generate a bit of cash and strip my gear collection back somewhat. Reputed as being one of the best DI's around for basses, I've never had any issues with it at all and it's in great nick with it's original box, padding and no damage to it internally or cosmetically. It sounds great and I am gutted to see it go but I need to bring in some money to fund other things I'm involved in. Only looking for a quick sale and unfortunately not driving at the minute to be able to meet someone looking for a direct pickup of the DI. Pictures uploaded tonight. I am away from home gigging all week so Sunday the 6th of July would be the earliest I'd be around to sort a courier or to have the item picked up. Cheers, B
7. Victor Wooten's 'feature' part from Sex In A Pan by Bela Fleck & the Flecktones! Shortest of the short clips I've ever got round to doing clocking in at 1min total playing time! The style of playing isn't really my scene but it was a request that I give it a go so have a gander if you've got exactly 1minute to spare! B
8. Not quite one song in particular that I've been working on but I've decided to use Christmas time and an empty flat (bring out the tiny violins) to work on my soloing over changes. Just recorded light backing tracks for most of my standards repertoire and going through them a couple of days a time. Fun! Must be other people shedding this Winter with this awful weather, right?
9. All great insight guys and I agree with all the points. Currently I've already thought that what Bigwan said is a good plan in that during the time I'm going to try and give the design some though I'm going to rinse the 'For Sale' section on here and just make a lot of no-loss buys and spend some time seeing what off-the-peg 6'ers appeal to me and try to find out why exactly I do like them before I approach Chris and everyone at Overwater to pay for the build. In regards to finding someone I have a strong relationship with that I trust to really respect any suggestions I have I do stand by the fact that Overwater are those people to me. They've been astounding every time I've spoken to them about any kind of orders I've made (never custom basses although I did discuss a design with them a year or so ago!) and I've not played an instrument of theirs that didn't really appeal to me in one way or another. I don't on a personal level seem to struggle too much when I play heavier instruments although I do completely appreciate that with a 6 this is a much more serious issue and that an instrument of this cost and boutique nature needs to be looked at as a long term investment and that I don't want to have back issues by the time I'm 30!! I don't know the string spacing on my bass but be it that I do play all day every day, whenever I can, I think that I should try and maybe not have a different string spacing on my 6 so to avoid muscle memory issues moving between the two.... On the Singlecut point I do find that people who have used this design are often players who don't seem to be geared so much towards a low, gutteral, dare I say it 'groove' based instrument and more so towards enhancing the sustain etc to contribute towards their solo approaches. Anyone care to shed light on how they might have heard singlecuts being utilised outside of lets say the world of jazz soloists?
10. Aright guys and gals how we doing? I'm deciding that I'm going to spend some time cluing myself up for taking an custom order over to have a 6 string made to order sometime next year. I know the 6 string thing seems to divide a lot of bassists and all that but I'm set at really experimenting over the next year by getting my hands on as many decent designs as I can to see what variables definitely are or aren't to my liking. My issue is that I've not dipped into the custom build world in the past and never pretend to have the slightest idea what woods and construction elements affect what parts of the sound seeing as to me a bass either sounds great or doesn't and I've come across complete opposite designs that have appealed to me in the same way. If anyone has any experiences dealing with any of these design elements or went through the same decision making process I'd love to know how you managed to educate yourself in making the right choices! What I DO want : Tuning in 4ths from Bb - B (Standard 6 string tuning a semitone lower than usual) Active p/ups Ramp 24 frets What I'm INTERESTED in/know nothing about: Singlecut design Scale length What I'm USED to: Overwater Perception 5, rosewood board, cocobolo top 35 scale Bolt On Construction standard gauge 45-125 strings Using no EQ onboard the Bass or on the amp at all [except...] Panning my pickups so the neck p'up is being used about 1/4 more I'm not particularly getting a 6 string on the basis of wanting to play lead lines high in the register and by that I mean that there seems to be a tradition in 6 string custom build requests that people aim for a much shorter scale length, extensive cutaways etc to facilitate playing the instrument easier in that way. I am much more interested in a modern electric bass sound that is geared more towards a good place, enough dirt and a real presence to underpin the other instruments in any tune I'm playing. With that said I can imagine off the bat that Anthony Jackson's extreme approach to this with his no EQ, 36 scale Fodera with a chambered body is also not a model to bass my design on. WIthout ranting any more you can probably see that my issue is that I love my current bass an extremely high amount but being that I don't know what in its construction has made me love it so much I can't properly comment on how to taylor a new bass perfectly to my tastes. HELP! Cheers, B
11. Not to spam the 'Bassists Available' section but I was advised that it wouldn't be awful of me to occasionally add the odd clip to my own topic so here we go with a completely new clip with some loose jazz stuff, palm muting and some slap in the latter half. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK1gI3yyg6c
12. Hi mate, the body's gone I'm afraid. The topic's been up so long i didn't think to close it. I was using stock-sized jazz pickups with the body though and it just has a wide route for the neck placement in general, not sure why but quite a few jazz bodies do. Cheers man, B
13. Thanks guys it all means a lot and I'm particularly proud that all the countless hours I spend in front of a mirror practising a rich variety of grimaces to incorporate into my playing hasn't gone unnoticed . All seriousness i do really appreciate the compliments. Jake - I agree mate. In all honesty I do take a very blunt approach when it comes to analysing my own playing and I am definitely of the approach that no aspect is too small to not be looked at in detail. That said though with these videos I'm finding it more an exercise in having the self confidence to just take a stark snapshot, no edits, one of the first couple of takes and then just lumping it online as an honest representation of how I sounded that exact second, as if it was a gig. I haven't watched the video yet! When I'm recording for clients obviously it's a different matter and an entirely different approach but I'm glad you pointed that out, I'll be chucking some note length shedding in today and I hope it shows in whatever I play next! Cheers guys! B
14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK1gI3yyg6c&list=PLReCuhYS9zOuudL1gdYL3WHLpCbnIUyc_&index=1 New video just uploaded to my Youtube account in trying to get back on with regular uploads. Just some effect-less pocket playing (hopefully!) over a groove I put together based on Me'Shell's tune 'The Womb' which I always thought was an insanely strong opening to her Peace Beyond Passion album. Always looking for feedback on the mixes and bass tone etc. All the gear nerds I was running my Overwater Perception Pro Deluxe 5 straight into an Avalon U5 and monitoring it all from the thru into my Aguilar but there was no mic on the cab at all. Mix of live percussion and sequenced stuff going on; myself failing miserably on a Nord Rhodes patch namely! Always looking to become more of a part of a larger community of musicians if anyone's got their own YT page they want to send my way! Cheers, B
15. New pictures in much better natural light which is a fairer, less red view of the bass. EDIT : She will get a run over with a nice cloth this afternoon!
16. BUMP for a wicked flanger.
17. BUMP for an amazing piece of kit!
18. It really is that kind of bass! Obviously it does sound decidedly modern in contrast to a fender design but with the pickup pan and EQ and how easily it allows different string sets to just sit with it there's a huge scope of different sounds. I used it in a studio session at Incognito's 'Cream' studio in London and the engineer said it was the best sound he'd heard from a bass using a Neumann U87 which is as hot as a compliment can get! I'm sorry I don't know the string spacing and just did a google search and it seems to be 19mm as standard on Overwaters but I'll have to have a look when i have the bass in front of me.
19. This amp is no longer for sale due to a huge change in circumstances. I will post it here rather than ebay or anything if I do come to sell it in the future. Sorry to anyone who was following the topic, I've not closed a sale in the past and really didn't know I'd ever need the amp again but apparently I do. Cheers, B
20. Hi, £70 delivered no trades due to not needing new items and sorry but please no international offers due to the hassle involved. Selling my Boss OC-2 that was made May 2003 with its original box and manual due to not needing it any more. Truly excellent condition with no damage or even noticeable signs of use! Pedal is down in Cardiff at the minute if anyone wants to pick it up and have the P+P knocked off or just want to try it out. Cheers,
