1. Act Too... The Love of My Life [Things Fall Apart] New video up this week again on the Overwater just having a bash at the bassline from a tune by The Roots - The Love Of My Life. Again, another tune I've loved for a long time from what a lot of people consider to be a fairly seminal album. Beat is made from scratch and produced by myself as per. Cheers, B
2. The Roots - Love Of My Life bass rework by me! Another hiphop one off the Things Fall Apart this time with a Source Audio Tri Mod Flanger and a complete remake of the beat from scratch again by myself and some additional mixing by my housemate Shamoniks.
3.
Not the sort of tune I was expecting with that title! Nicely played though, lots of feel (and bassface - I love it!)
Cheers man! The rest of the album (XXX) is much, much heavier and I think he was going for some sort of 'artistic irony' when he made the only downbeat tune and named it 'Party All The Time' haha. Thanks for the feedback!
4. Last week's video just varying the bassline to Danny Brown's tune Party All The Time. Solidly working on hiphop lines lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOMDo7DUEJ4
5. New video up jamming to a remake of Danny Brown's tune 'Party All The Time' from the XXX album. http://youtu.be/NOMDo7DUEJ4 Always dug the track and found it great doing my own take and having to play more aggressively and with a different tone to what I normally go for. All feedback is welcome. Cheers, B
6. New video went online on Friday and feeling quite good keeping regular with the uploads so far! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxKmBnzSYQk Hope it tickles someone's fancy. Cheers, B.
7. I think practise can definitely get you much closer to developing a natural feel for what it means to be in front or behind the beat. If you spend practise time learning all your subdivisions and getting used to being able to execute them all at any given time and accurately then that is a great foundation to mark out the goal posts if you like. It's probably worth noting that playing perfectly in time is a mathematical impossibility for humans but much more importantly that playing perfectly on the beat (I'm talking about recording yourself and looking on a grid and seeing a perfectly straight vertical waveform exactly where it should be on a grid) just doesn't sound that great most of the time; to my ears anyway. That said i think making efforts to know exactly where subdivisions are and gaining a strong internal clock meaning you can play time with no click or even a terrible drummer and still maintain a pulse is definitely a clever move before moving on to blurring the lines a little. Ultimately my next thought is to just go and play with live musicians and try and just let a lazy/pushed feel happen as you feel it appropriate and then check tapes and see what was achieved.
8. Video just playing through some effects as part of making the most of spare time between work contracts. Using my Overwater Perception Pro 5, Boss OC-2, Keeley 4 Knob [for sale on ebay now] and finally a Source Audio Tri-Mod Flanger. New video drops tomorrow!
9. Hi mate, I'd vouch for a pair of Sennheiser HD 25 's if you can get the budget together. I own a pair and they've taken a bit of a beating but still work fine and also have the benefit of being able to replace all the parts individually (far as I know, certainly the wiring, earpieces etc). They sound excellent with a surprisingly good low end response for a pair of cans that price and also give a fairly flat response which is great for revealing things in a mix (or even in practising!). I'd back them no-end as the way forward in the price range. Don't get the 'sp' versions or whatever they are they're not spec'd quite the same and are slightly cheaper for reasons I can't remember right now, sorry!
10. Hi guys, Just uploaded a short clip playing around with some effects to try and start being regular with my output video-wise. All feedback well appreciated. Cheers, B. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myWxKTdBl84
11. Got some gaps in my calendar this Summer and Autumn if anyone is looking for a dep, someone to write with or some long-term commitments a bit further in the future. Latest video can be caught here and went live earlier tonight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myWxKTdBl84
12. The amp has now been sold! Cheers for the interest and offers.
13. All PMs replied to and the amp and myself are currently sat down in Cardiff fairly central to the rest of town.
14. Sale Value - £435 pre postage Hi, For sale is my Markbass CMD121P 300watt combo which I bought to take down with me when I moved to London quite some time ago and is surplus to requirements now that I don't go on the tube any more. Great little combo that I've only used in one gig and never had to drive it hard nor has it taken any knocks, been dropped etc. I used it in a recording session in Incognito's 'Cream' studio for a musical where the engineer used a Neumann U87 on the combo and said overall it was the best tone he'd ever got out of that mic which to me is the biggest compliment a piece of gear could ever hope for! Spec is below as listed by Markbass themselves and there's also photos I've taken myself of the combo in question. As you can see in one of the pictures the rubber surround from the handle has come away from the main supporting metal strip which hasn't weakened the handle at all and is purely cosmetic. £435 for the combo and I ask that anyone interested arrange their own courier, at their own cost or arrange to pick it up from Cardiff for which I'm very flexible but can't currently travel to a halfway point etc unfortunately. I also have and will send the markbass black and yellow cover that came with the combo when I bought it which is in perfect nick and does the job. Thanks for looking, B. 17. Bought an Aguilar head from WOT for a good price, fast responses, no mucking about and even waited to arrange the courier a on a specific day for me to line up with when I'd be around to sign for it. Top guy to deal with! B
18. I actually was forwarded the add for the China contract as soon as it popped up on here and it looks like an astounding gig for the right person (always fancied China - more than a fair stone's throw away from our own UK culturally I bet) but I've been away on a cruise gig fairly relentlessly for a hideously long time considering normally musicians seem to dip in and out of that work and I'm going to step back from residency-type work for a while unless it's stood firmly on dry land where I can still be playing other stuff. Cheers for your 2p though, really appreciated mate.
19. Quick bump to let anyone who has any serious slots opening up or dep jobs from May 27th 2013 onwards that I have a fair few openings in my calendar seeing as I come back from a (far too) long stint on a cruise. More than happy to discuss ideas with anyone who does get in contact and all work is considered. Also if anyone knows musicians involved in the scene down Bristol area please get in touch as I'm soon relocating there and would appreciate jamming with new faces. Short clip which is unlike what I normally work on playing but it is something I dip into from time to time. 20. I don't find myself losing any sleep over the matter in the slightest nor do I think that anyone should say to themselves 'i'm only going to try and do this thing with this equipment/i'm strictly against using certain kinds of equipment to make music' but I just wondered what people prefer to do themselves in terms of how they perform electronic music. I totally agree that people should experiment and plenty of styles of music have been born out of people trying to perform music on instruments that aren't 'authentic' or whatever. That said though there's definitely a certain cost attached to getting involved with fx chains or working with midi/audio converters and a DAW and on the other hand emulating an instrument that isn't your own could take a lot of time to nail if you really did want to nail a feel (can't stand people turning up to michael jackson charts and overlooking the difference in phrasing that comes with synth bass players). I have a fair bit of effect knocking about AND a couple of synths that I can play fairly well so I don't limit myself to one or the other but given the pros and cons of both I just wondered what people like to do in terms of preference.
21. Hi guys, Can't be sorry enough for how ridiculously pretentious the title sounds but I've been trying to find where i personally stand on the above issue and where I'm going to direct my own playing style. In regards to the quickly developing scene of performing heavily electronic-based music live on instruments OTHER than those it was originally sequenced with I was wondering where you, as bass players (particularly if you're interested in electronic music scenes) stand on taking the route of either forcing your bass guitar/upright to emulate the sound of say a sub, sinewave synth line or similar vibe with a mid-synth sound or actually building up an internal library of how this music SOUNDS and is phrased etc and then taking on the chin how an electric bass sounds and that what you might create will just be a new branch of that music that doesn't actually sound all too similar but is structured the same etc? Obviously I see benefits and issues in both approaches such as the initial cost of racking up lines of pedals, dealing with tracking issues etc when absolutely trying to copy a synth sound or what have you and on the other hand stylistically you could find your music not having as easily marketable a place in the industry or it not sounding/having the same affect on audiences that those original records had on you. I was checking out what it is I want to personally achieve in that respect after hearing Jojo Mayer talk about how he has no illusion that he can't actually play like a machine but he said that his aim with 'reverse engineering' drum and bass was to simply take away enough stylistic abstraction to be able to create the illusion that he sounded like a machine. For all I know this might be a dead-ended discussion seeing as I don't know where I stand on the issue myself. Interested to hear people's thoughts.... B
22. Just a brief update so long as no one minds - Currently onboard a cruise line over Christmas through to the end of April 2013. Working on new videos as a better way of keeping in touch with the UK and developing a HD studio setup for online sessions/writing in the latter half of 2013. Hope everyone's having a good Christmas period and making the most out of playing Brown Eye Girl, Play That Funky Music and Superstition! B
23. I got my hands on a GAIA a year or so ago for just the same reason, the 80s records are where it's at to get decent lines to play for sure! I reckon doubling on synth is the new doubling on upright, to me anyway. Nice playing mate.
