Selling my Trace Elliot 1248H 4x12" cab
Conan replied to Delberthot's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Just goes to show - "be careful what you wish for!!" Just out of interest, how would you describe the difference between the two cabs? The "experts" tell us that speakers of a certain size don't have a certain sound... so would you say that it was down to the differences between 12s and 15s? -
Perhaps, but isn't it easier to just have a good bass sound at the start and not have to do all that processing?
You're right of course, but the "original" bass tone is the one selected by the bass player. The tone that appears on the finished recording will have been influenced by the engineer and/or producer so that it fits the "sound" that the band or producer are going for. Often the bassist is not consulted on this process, but obviously it depends on the scenario...
what the heck? 300w 8ohms? i am confused is it a different cab because the price is good...
That is confusing - especially as the combo version is supposed to put out the full 450w into one of these cabs! Are there two versions?

Don't beat yourself up about it. You'll only end up black and blue!
lol there's not many of us granted, there are a few knocking around but we're severely outnumbered lol!
Which is a great shame! Sometimes it does feel like a bit of a "boys' club" in here... Trying to convince my "nearly 14" year old daughter that bass is the way to go...
I think there was a bumpy wolf note around the B, making the others feel a little queter. Unfortunately, in this band, most of the songs are in or around B, so there was no escape..
Ah. The fickle hand of fate, my friend!! Good point about the room though - there are some rooms where you just can't get a decent sound no matter what you use
I tracked everything with the Squier, then the engineer noticed I'd also brought my Thumb bass and insisted that I re-record everything with that.... the contribution of the Warwick over the Squier was very obvious. So I'm now convinced that the extra quids are worth it, at least if you're recording. Live is different and I could probably continue to live with the Squier to be honest!
Good example. But I can't help wondering how much is simply down to the difference between the tones, rather than one being "better" per se than the other? Also, it would depend on the style of music and how the other musicians play too. In a very busy mix I guess that the middly "growl" of the Warwick would cut through better than the slightly scooped J? But as you can add or subtract so much at the mixing stage I'm not sure how much the original tone matters as long as its been played accurately! Thumbs have an amazing tone, but I'm not sure they are perfect for everything. A J is almost the bass world's "jack of all trades" - a "jazz of all trades" as it were!!
Where I was standing the low notes up to the A on the E string seemed a bit on the quiet side, but after talking to a few people I'm confident it's not an inherent characteristic of the amp - it was possibly EQ, the room, my bass, or some other factor.
But surely if nothing else in your set-up has changed...? Same cabs, cables, basses... Just thinking out loud here!
Wow, whats the name of the shop?
Took the words right outta ma mouth!! I know of a pawn shop on Queen Street which is hugely expensive, with the result that gear sits there for years! There's a lovely old sunburst Rick, but they are asking over £1300 for it... in a pawn shop!!
My experience made me glad I don't actually live in a nice area. If I did, the recipient of my Tobias might have realised it was worth more than the next hit.
Or maybe someone nice would have knocked on the the door and said "excuse me sir, I couldn't help noticing...."!

Sounds like a simple cost vs benefit analysis to me. What is this guy worth to you? How good a singist is he? Could you easily replace him with someone equally as good? Arguments about things like this can tear bands apart. I would suggest that you need a proper band meeting to clear the air and sort stuff out. E-mail is ok for mundane communication, but this all sounds a bit too serious to be dealt with by e-mail! If he lets you down again, the reputation of the whole band could be ruined for good. Is he worth that hassle? Of course, it's dead easy advising other bands what to do, but its much harder when you are actually involved. We've all been there!
My next 'open' gig is at the Smugglers in *deep breath* Sunderland a week on Sunday afternoon if that's any good..?
Is that the one down on Roker beach? Had some good (if under-attended!) gigs in there a few years ago...

Where's the gig on saturday WoT? Might try to get along and hear it myself!

I seem to recall that he used a Steinberger on the escape album...
At the end of the day it's not about cost. It's about the instrument that fits you best and makes the sound/sounds you want. For some that will be a £300 Squier Classic Vibe model and for others it will be an £5-8000 Alembic or Fodera. If you have full blown GAS, get out to the bigger bass shops and try as many as you can until you reach your own personal nirvana.
Spot on. For me, I have never played a bass that suited me better than my Status series 2, which I bought brand new (as a 19 year old - eek!) in 1986! It's like putting on an old pair of slippers (in that it just fits me and my style perfectly.... er, not that an old pair of slippers is my style or anything.... er... ). I think you know what I mean! But I've also played some fantastic Squire Ps and Js - for three hundred quid or so you seriously can't go wrong - as long as you like Fenders that is... I'm confusing myself now. Night night!
There was someone that had up loads of TE stuff in the for sale forum recently. And I mean loads.
That would be Thorneybank.... Whisper this gently after me..... "Fodera Monarch"....

Still no review from Mr. Oftyne?! Too busy twiddling with his new knobs I'll wager.... Gimme a shout if you wanna run the RH through the Compact WoT!

Again, having used both Sounds Live (which is actually based here in Newcastle!) and Strings Direct regularly, I would unhesitatingly recommend both!!

Good call on "Dance on heavy weather" - just about my favourite L42 track in terms of bass sound... The comments about King's bass tone lacking balls/oomph/bottom etc may have a ring of truth about them when referring to his studio recorded sound, but believe me when they played live there was plenty of low end to fill out the sound of the band! Considering the lightness of the strings he used (30-90 IIRC), its a wonder he got any tone at all!! Yes, the "machine gun" triplets and "bassist as typist" stuff in the early to mid eighties got seriously out of hand, but it was just so damned exciting back then! Sure it sounds passe now, but TBH, until Wooten came along, who else had really shaken up the bass world since about 1983? Miller's tone never lacked bottom end either - just depends on what kind of speakers you listen to your music on I guess. My own personal feeling on "slap tone" (if there is one!)... You can scoop out the mids (that seems to be the expectation) but you don't have to! Like any style of playing, its in the fingers (and thumb!) - with only a certain amount being contributed by the bass, strings, amp, speakers... Having said that, ever heard slap played on a Rickenbacker?!
Hi There We were a three piece, but no longer as our bassist left. That's where you come in. We are kind of folk, rock, punk or something like that. I've been doing this for quite some time and I'm 33, so perhaps not too young. I've only worked in original bands andI have huge back log of songs, me an Paolo are more than ready to gig and we sould be able to arrange a half hour set pretty soon. I can send you a couple of MP3s if you like so you can see whether it's to your tase. I'd need you e-mail of course. Rob
Hi Rob That sounds interesting! Will PM you with my e-mail details so you can send the MP3s! Geoff

level 42 people...how to get the sound...
Conan replied to marcus bell's topic in General Discussion
Possibly a bit of very-subtle envelope filter too? Bit of distortion? It's an odd sound.... Whenever he plays this type of fingerstyle, he wears his Stanley Clarke influences on his sleeve for all to see (and hear!). -
Brave man!! I'd love one of these but just don't have the available funds at the moment (hoping the price will come down in a year or two...), so I'm really looking forward to hearing what you make of it!
The Obbm cable that I have got is first class, so I won't be looking elsewhere for my next purchase.
Same here! I've got three of his cables now - great stuff and reasonably priced (i.e. not cheap, but not a rip-off either).
