Hardest piece of music I have ever tried to play...
Conan replied to Bilbo's topic in Theory and Technique
If this is a wind-up, it's lost on me sadly! Thanks for the tip-off Bilbo! Nice one!! Guess I look like a total arse now... -
Hardest piece of music I have ever tried to play...

Looks easy enough to me..... but then I can't read music! Shame, as my youngest daughter is called Elanor (Tolkein spelling!)... -
Any thoughts on the Ashdown LG 1000? There's one for sale on here thats all.
Looks like a good price! Never used one myself, but in my experience you can't go far wrong with Ashdown gear. I personally don't much care for these new-fangled "mini-amps"... but each to their own! I think they look silly perched on the top of a full sized cab, but that's just me! On the other hand, my amp weighs nearly as much as the cabs do!! Horses for courses.

The amp itself will have information on it (usually on the back, but sometimes on the front as well) stating how much power it will give into speaker cabs. My Ampeg for example gives 200 watts into 8 ohms or 350 watts into 4 ohms. Some amps will run safely at 2 ohms combined load (I am not sure that there are any 2 ohm cabs, but two 4 ohm cabs connected into the same amp will allow the amp to run at 2 ohms...). Most of the cabs currently available (there are a few exceptions) will have an impedance of either 4 or 8 ohms - so if I run my amp head through one 4 ohm cab I will get the "full" 350w. However, my cabs are 8 ohms each! If I only connect one of them to the amp I will only get 200 watts, but if I connect BOTH, the total impedance falls to 4 ohms and magically I get 350 watts!! Great innit!? Each cab has a power handling ability of 450 watts. As the amp puts 350 watts into the pair of them, each cab is in effect getting 175 watts - so that is well withing the range that they are designed or rated to cope with. Remember though that the power output of an amp, and the power handling ability of a cab, do not give a reliable indication of how loud they will be!! That's when all that techno stuff about efficiency etc come in and make my head spin! Hope this is helpful! I'm no expert mind... Some people will say that you should try to get an amp and cab made by the same manufacturer, but I'm not sure this makes any real difference. If you are buying second-hand it is much easier to mix-and-match anyway!

Dunno about "best", but I've used parcelforce a few times with no problems at all...
Thanks for posting that. Thought I'd seen it all, but I love discovering this stuff.
Anyone else notice that although he's playing a lefty bongo, he strung it upside down!?!?

Never used one of these, but if you want quality at a great price with an element of future-proofing (in other words, you're unlikely to ever need a more powerful amp head!)... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=82027&hl=

How long is a piece of string? Do you play in a band? If so, how loud are they? Will you be gigging with the amp? If so, will you have PA support? What kind of sound are you looking for? How big/strong are you?! There are plenty of options available in the "amps and cabs for sale" section on here, as, to be honest, £300 ain't gonna get you much if you buy new! Would you play a style thats not to your taste ?
Conan replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
In 1997 I joined/formed a blues band with a mate. I never listen to blues music but I enjoy gigging and playing music of most genres... It was never intended to be long-term thing. I left in 2005!!! Still don't like blues music to listen to, but it can be fun to play - especially if you like and get on with your bandmates. Then again, I've never relied on music as a source of income. -
Bassist wanted for massive heavy riffing in Newcastle area
Well, we're keeping options open (never say no to a good drummer!), so if he/she would be genuinely interested in making some colossal noise with a couple of shambolic gentlemen around the age of 30, PM me and I'll give you my contact details to pass on.
I'll do that, but I'll speak to him first. Does that mean you're not interested in my offer of bass groovage? -

Not bad..... but it's still a sperm whale!

Ironically, I know a drummer who would be able to fill your slot.... But I quite like the sound of the existing set-up! Count me in if the position is still up for grabs! Even though I've only heard of a few of those bands.... -
I'm in the minority I suppose! .... my main gigging bass of the last 3 years has been a SC. Oh and it balances perfectly and clocks in at not much more than 8lb in weight.
Now that I do like! The Les Paul shape is fine, and works on a bass too IMO! So maybe its the size of the SC....
I think that thing looks like a f***ing dugong. And so do all other single-cutaway bass bodies.
I think the marine mammal you are thinking of is a sperm whale....
Go for it. And stack them vertically!
Now that I would love to see!!!
The local saying was in fact 'Gan doon darza wi' Burman'.
I stand corrected.... and indeed impressed!!

OK. I was with you up till about the third sentence there....
Conan, i know what you mean about sperm whales!!
I rest my case.... after the Warwick Dolphin we have the warwick Sperm Whale!
Nah, down size to a Berg IP stack, its in almost certainly louder than entire rig would be (LM250 is a piddler after all), fits in the boot of your car easily and will sound a hundred times better...... it until you destroy their Ampeg with your 2 12 rig
Now this is where I get confused. Most of the "speaker experts" on here and elsewhere tell us that its speaker area that gives volume.... so how can two twelves shift as much air as sixteen tens?! I realise that the Berg speakers are probably extremely high efficiency, but surely MB speakers aren't that bad?! Why is it that as soon as I think I see "the light at the end of the tunnel" with amplification, someone throws me another curve ball?!

"Gan doon canny wi' Borman!" Is it just a Geordie orban myth, or was that really used as a marketing phrase? http://www.burmanamps.fsnet.co.uk/

Do it man! If you don't, you'll spend the rest of your life wondering "what if...."!
ITS HIDEOUS!! Am i the only one here or does someone agree? Thoughts?
I agree!! Horrible looking things. For some reason they all remind me of sperm whales.... Personally, I don't care about how much it improves neck stability, balance, whatever - I just don't like the look of them!
