1. He was always a hero of mine, but I never realised just how knowledgeable the guy truly is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwpGXfHmY-A...feature=related
2. Yep - look at the for sale section on this very forum! Two hundred quid won't get much on the brand new market, but some extremely good gear at great prices come up regularly on here. Even stuff like Trace Elliot, Marshall, Ampeg, Ashdown, Roland, etc should be well within your reach if you are prepared to be patient... Highly recommended - but also rather addictive! Even if you can't cobble together another ton, might be worth a speculative offer on this beast - a fantastic combo at a brilliant price... 3.
But. It's a solo performance and I can't/won't see the bass guitar as a solo instrument.
Surely any instrument, played in isolation, becomes a 'solo' instrument? I'm no fan of over-the-top bass solo playing for it's own sake - but if someone can demonstrate their virtuosity in an impressive yet tuneful way, then they have my respect. I agree about "Sharp dressed man" though...
4.
Indeed they are. We have a selection of large cabs coming out next year though: Super Fifteen - full-range 2x15" (two Compacts in one box)
Ooooohh!
5. Are these still for sale? Brilliant cabs at a great price... have a bump on me!
6. I agree to an extent. However, if I am pleased with my tone, I enjoy playing more. If I enjoy playing, I tend to play better and with more enthusiasm. That makes the band sound better and everyone is happy. If I can't get a tone that pleases me, I find playing a bit of a chore sometimes. That can't be good.
7.
Probably a much better idea to just get a Status Hiscox case. Carrying full flights has lost its fun element for me and I'd prefer the lighter option. If you want to contact BSH, drop me a PM and I'll pass on the company's details. If you do PM, let me have the serial of your bass - it's probably very close to mine - I'm not sure if mine arrived in '85 or '86 (probably the former).
Thanks for the info! Ironically, I used to have the serial number of my Status in my sig, but I thought it came across as a bit "anoraky"!! It is actually #263, and it was completed in late 1986. I'd never though of looking at Hiscox, as I assumed that only Status would make Status cases - given the unusual shape of their guitars. Would a new case cost less than the hundred quid you paid for the re-foam work? I totally agree about the unwieldy nature of the original flight cases. I'm always bashing it off walls, doors, etc!! I'm highly unlikely to ever sell my Series II, but if I did I could obviously sell it with the original case AND lighter Hiscox version! Thanks for that - I'll have a look now! Geoff EDIT: Just looked at the status website and they sell moulded cases for £68!! Excellent! Cheers again lozbass!
8.
Never heard of the sleaze sisters to be honest, we actually filled our bass slot a month ago but a couple of us are planning a blues/jazz side project which we aim to gig only once or twice a month and thought that might be something that would suit your availability?
Possibly! Why not drop me a PM with a few more details? Ages, material, planned itinerary, etc? I look forward to hearing from you
9. When I use effects, which is rare, I tend to use them as exactly that - to create an effect. For that reason I am extremely unsubtle in their use and the reaction tends to be along the lines of "what the feck was that?!" In a previous life, in a jazz/funk/soul band; I used chorus quite a lot, but I'm not sure anyone really noticed much. I'm not really into subtlety so now I just try to keep my signal path as pure and clear as possible to cut through. The only effects unit I currently own is a twenty-or-so year old Yamaha EMP100 that I keep trying (unsuccessfully!) to sell. It makes some really silly arpeggio type sounds which I like to play about with but could never use in a band scenario...
10. Where abouts are you jonboi? If you are anywhere near the North East of England and would like a bit of a blast on an original 1980s Status - drop me a PM mate!
11.
MB1. Not just Your Problem! the foam does deteriorate in cases after many years! not just Status Ones! .You might want to have a word with Lozbass on the forum ! he has had cases refoamed in the past and will probably be able to help!.
Cheers! Nice to hear that my problems are not unique. Not this one, anyway...
12. Nice! Is that what people mean by "floating thumb" BTW?
13.
Any questions, ask away!
What you changing to? I presume that the answer might involve an anagram of the word 'POMCACT'??
14. Hi all (and particularly the Status fans out there!) I bought my Status series II back in 1986. It came with an original fitted case, that has a moulded foam insert shaped to the exact shape of the bass. Very safe, very snug. So far so good. Unfortunately, 24 years later, that foam is starting to deteriorate quite badly into a dark grey gritty powder. It is getting into various holes and gaps in the bass and generally irritating me! Is this a known problem in Status cases of this age or have I just been unlucky? Is it easy to replace? Need it be done by Rob Green or is there another manufacturer that can custom mould/cut foam to fit? Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

Passive Tone Shaping

What on earth is that ugly three-string bass he's playing?
16.
Yes, it weighs 33lbs or 15kg, so slightly less than expected!
Mother and baby doing well?
17.
Hello, sorry but I've only just noticed your reply...are you still available? We are an established covers band playing a wide variety of venues
Hi. Yes, I am still technically available - but if this is the Sleaze Sisters gig, I've done a bit of research and it doesn't sound like my cup of decaf. Sorry!
18. If any of you Geordie BC'ers would like to have a blast with my Vintage, just PM me. I am currently only rehearsing every three weeks so the big feller is champing at the bit to be used!! Tone-wise, it's very like the compact - just bigger and more of it (as some of you will recall from our mini-bash a few weeks ago).
19.
These Status basses had that fierce, almost uncontrollably aggressive sound.
You're talkin' my crack-a-lackin' language!!
20. Some people might argue that in many ways my Status series II is little more than a "signature" bass - or at least it was at the time I bought it! Back in 1986, Mark King was at the height of his publicity and powers, and few bassists used Status basses. One or two spring to mind - Rhino Edwards in Status Quo, Dick Nolan in It Bites, Curt Smith in Tears for Fears, Pete Trewavas in Marillion.... The Kingbass is horrible though. Yuk. Not only that, it is a true sig bass as it was designed with one player in mind... I don't much care for that concept I'm afraid. On the other hand, taking a specific model that a player has made "famous" and cloning it for the mass market (Like the Geddy Jazz) is slightly different IMO. So my favourite sigs are probably the Steve Harris P and the Geddy J. Not very original I realise!
21.
ps Larry Graham's tone rules
This man IS Funk! Interesting how he keeps moving his right hand around and how it changes the attack, tone, etc. And that voice!!
22. Anyway, round here Santa always comes (oo-er!) dressed as a snowman. He is a big fan of Aled Jones don't you know?
23. Yeah. I always find inflatable Santas throw my timing...
24. I would use the term "growl" to describe the sound that I get from either my BareFaced Vintage or the Compact. Fifteen inch speakers.... very light package.... extremely loud. Remember though that Geddy Lee's tone is down to far more than the speakers he uses (or indeed doesn't use!).
25. What a great bunch you are on here! Luke now has his £35 and the pack is "sort of" sold!! It's a long story, but many thanks are dues to Tom1946 - one of life's good guys. Thanks for all the interest chaps!
