1.
I personally don't mind a terse response if the advice I'm being given is good. That's always better than a longer, more rambling reply than doesn't address the issue in question.
2.
when someone is enthusiastic, they'll love the process and nothing can stop them. That deserves encouragement.
I agree up to a point... Some people love learning. The actual process of learning I mean. Whereas others see the learning as a means to an end and want to get to that end as quickly as possible. The old analogy about the journey and the destination also apply here. Sometimes it is better to travel...
 3. I'm not sure that there is actually a "best" pickup, is there? There are loads of threads on here where someone asks for advice about what pickups to fit in their bass, and pretty much everyone comes up with a different answer! They can't all be right - but equally, can they all be wrong? Personal preference is a massive influence. What my ears hear and my brain likes may not be the same as everyone (or even anyone!) else likes. BTW, my dad is exactly the same when it comes to the "it's just wire and magnets" view. I'm not quite as dogmatic as that, but I do suspect that more of the differences are perceived rather than real...
 4. The internet is a fantastic resource and has almost endless uses... but it can also make people lazy. Do the research first. See what you can find before asking questions that have been answered elsewhere. That said, this website is an amazing source of all kinds of information! And in general, even the most banal questions get answered in a helpful and polite manner. Well done Basschat!
 5.
I think Deps should get MORE than the band members as it's not regular work so they're not having the benefit of recurring gigs and they have to be better than the band members 'cos they're not getting the rehearsals...
Exactly. If it wasn't for the dep, the gig would have to be cancelled or played without that particular instrument. This is also why supply teachers get paid more (on a daily basis) than permanent teachers. Supply teachers don't get paid during the holidays...
 6.
You don't want to know what I've got in my car.
Well, until you said that - you were correct. Now though.... TELL US!!!
 7. Is it possible to add a capacitor or a resistor or some other electrical component between the P pickup and the socket? Just to somehow "cool" or attenuate the output of the louder pickup to something similar to the J? Then just turn the amp up a bit.... I am no elctrical wizard (pun partly intended) so please don't take the piss if this suggestion is stupid...
 8.
it's interesting to see trends emerge, such as massive Geddy fans disliking his bass sounds. It's interesting.
Interesting indeed! I really like Geddy's tone again now. In fact, I have done so since he switched back to using his Jazz on or around the Counterparts album... I just wish he would incorporate his tone into some decent songs these days.... Funnily enough, after years of using DRs, D'Addarios and Elites; I went back to a set of Roto 66s. (I got them as a present for Christmas.) Out of the pack they sounded OK, but very quickly lost their zing. I mean within a few hours! I took them off and was toying with giving them away on here.... but I stuck them in meths overnight and put them back on. Wow! The difference was amazing! Not only did they sound zingier than they did when brand new, but that zing has lasted for several weeks. I am now very pleased with the tone I am getting from them
 9. Apparently not... Thirty???
 10. My CD changer holds six CDs.... and the current incumbents are: 100 and rising - Incognito Best of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Scott Walker sings Jacques Brel Imaginos - Blue Oyster Cult Touch - Noiseworks The Black Swan - Triffids
 11.
Minimum £100 You are after all spending two nights with the band and no doubt a good amount of time studying any tunes you don't know.
Surely the whole point of declaring yourself available for dep work is that you already have a huge repertoire and/or can read and/or can learn tunes extremely quickly and are versatile enough to play well with the rest of the band? Or am I missing something? That said, I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect a little more than the regular bassist. After all, your presence will have saved the band's reputation (especially if the dep is needed at very short notice). As with a lot of these questions, I guess the best answer would be "it depends".
 12.
I did get something else and its on its way now. It is still lighter by 10kg than the Ashdown and its still a 4x10"
Don't tease..... what is it? I was going to suggest something like my BFB Vintage - lovely and light and blisteringly loud, and could be bought for about £500 if you could find anyone daft enough to sell you their used one...
 13. Do I hear THIRTY FIVE POUNDS???
 14. Metallic bump... or maybe a "clang" would be more appropriate?
 15.
Didn't know that, Edinburgh rumour was they were all Jambo's. His mum & dad used to run a nearby garage/filling station.
The garage was in Dalkieth. And the Jambo thing is massively ironic as Fish is a huge Hibs fan!
 16.
They got a lot of stick for being a Scottish Genesis but I never saw it myself.
Yeah, I never got that. Fish was the only Scot in the band! And he joined them down in Aylesbury, where they were based for years... On the bread thing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvCl5KgAnr4
 17.
Pete T. isn't as deep in the pocket as I'd like, but ... everyone else is just SO relaxed and together. I love it.
Well, they have been playing that track for thirty years now, so they bloody well should be relaxed and together! Ian Mosely is a decent drummer, and certainly streets ahead of Mick "the kitchen" Pointer... But I personally think that Marillion lost any kudos and edge when Fish left. His solo material is so much more interesting than anything they have done since Season's End. I prefer Pete T's work with Transatlantic. Much tighter and better "pocket" playing (if such a thing exists in any kind of "prog" related music!). 18.
I'm quite partial to this little number...
Nice. But not, maybe, as nice as this one (when it comes to "sublimeness"?)
 19. Open to offers and/or trades
 20. What frustrates me more is the way that the mundane things in life impinge on the time that I have to play and enjoy music. One of the problems of being "middle aged" (as I found out that I was yesterday...) is that you have wider responsibilities than simply indulging yourself (ambiguity partly intended!). My job in particular seems to be taking more out of me than it ever did before. When I get home I just want to cook a nice meal, drink lots of beer/wine/whisky, watch a bit of TV.... and by that time I'm usually asleep on the sofa. Christ, I'm boring myself now!
 21.
Simplicity is not aesthetic justification in itself : simple music and economic playing by musicians is just as apt to be rubbish as complicated music and highly technical playing .
True. I said "simple is good" though, not "simple is best"
 22. Is he performing music or are you just meeting him for a pint?
 23.
Techinical stuff on the instrument you play is useful for learning. If musicality is the thing you are learning, you can learn it from any instrument.
Yes... but you still have to have the technical ability to be able to play the "musical" stuff that you hear in your learned head
 24.
Superb post mate.
25.
This to me is one of the most beautiful songs ever:
Lovely! But I'm biased coz I like Mogwai...
