4. Used Flatwounds and Halfwounds Pyramid Gold Flats 40-100 - £25 Cut for 2+2 headstock as they came off my Jack Casady bass. Had fair bit of use but these aren’t dead sounding strings, even the E string has a reasonable sustain. They are more in the TI bass park than traditional full-on-thump flats. I found these nailed the early Mani/Stone Roses sound very well (think the intro of She Bangs The Drums). Low tension (not quite wet-noodle TI tension) and easy on the hands. [s]Picato Flats 45-105 - £10 Proper thuddy old school strings and are my ‘go to’ flats. Very smooth to the touch and reasonable tension (id say slightly less than Fender 9050ML’s). Great thump and not much sustain. These are an older set so are un-silked at both ends. Cut for a P bass and very much broken in to give that dark thump.[/s] Picato Halfrounds – 45-105 - £10 Id actually say these have a slightly stiffer feel that the full flats. The E string certainly has a feel of real girth that enables a nice low action. There is little visual difference between Picato’s flats and halfs – the only real give away being the last few millimetres’ at the bridge end remains roundwound. On the bass they certainly carry much more sustain than the Picato Flats but still have a old school thump, id say they sound more flats than a lot of current flatwounds! These were sold to me as cut for P bass but they did fit on my Jack Casady perfectly too. All prices include P&P in UK
  5. Oops, forgot. I am in York for a few days from Sunday so might hold up postage (or if you are in York I could bring them
  6. Couple of pedals for sale as ive seen a pedal I want locally so need money and pedalboard space:- [s]1) Boss Super Chorus CH-1 - £30 Excellent condition and has original box. Will be packaged safely for postage. Great pedal for heavy sludgy type overdrive or distortion. Has switch for clean, OD or Distortion and a 3-point switch for amount of overtones. Velcro on bottom [s]3) EHX LPB-1 Linear Booster - £15 Again, great condition and used when I had a valve amp to push it into a nice overdrive. Simple one knob pedal that does what it says on the tin. Velcro on bottom[/s] Can be collected from Bolton or delivered locally. For postage in UK I recon it shouldn’t be more than £5? Pics to follow asap

  8. Would consider a trade on the remaining Pyramids for another set of flats (either new or cut for 2+2). Maybe something like DR's?
  9. Has original box and has been kept on my pedal board so really good condition (other than Velcro on bottom). Shifting and I don't use it much and could do with a decent compressor. £35 posted in UK or trade for a reasonable compressor pedal. Pic to follow
  10. Love my PB70, have been thinking about selling my Jack Casady to fund another. GLWTS
  11. In my quest to nail a certain tone (Look Out Sunshine – The Fratellis) and with excellent help from JTUK of this parish im almost there. Last nights rehearsal was the closest ive got by simply making my signal much hotter (had my Boost pedal on all the time), BDI at full output and volume on my bass at max and turning the amp down to compensate – effectively hitting the amps valve front end with a BIG signal. I was getting a nice valvey type grittiness to the sound and a big fat tone I think the final part in the quest will be a compressor – but im brand new to pedals and am a proper technophobe. Up until a few months ago I was against pedals and went straight into a valve amp and cab. What im currently running P Bass (flats) > TU2 > Behringer BDI (always on, SVT type setting) > Chorus > Ibanez PD7 OD > Linear Booster This goes into an SVTIII (No pro so no gain control) > Ampeg SVT 410he As a note I switched the 3 x 12ax7’s in my amps pre for some Chinese high gain valves that are nice and gritty) Im looking to drop a compressor in but have a few (maybe misguided) specifics:-

Listening to the track im trying to emulate it sounds like only the low notes ae compressed so something that does this ideally. The low notes thump, then seem almost immediately restrained initially then bloom out into a valvey tone/sustain – I guess his tone is coming from natural all valve amp sag/compression rather than an effect.
Ive seen some compressors also boot signal – this would be ideal as it would be a drop in replacement for my current booster rather than adding another pedal to my board. Failing that, if it is an additional pedal I end up with, where abouts would I place it in the chain
Simple to use – its got to be easy to use and would probably be a ‘on all the time’ type effect
Cheap ideally. Im playing in boozers and the crowd probably wouldn’t recognise all the tone im getting – its purely for my personal tone obsession with this particular track/sound
14. I did think about compression as the sound he seems to be getting is that almost restrained initial pillowy thump that the blooms/breaks out into the mild grind type sustain. The pedal which seems to fit the bill (on a budget) here would be:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/OnceAll-Effects-Dr-Aerolite-Compressor/dp/B00D8KKKJ0 It’s a compressor AND a booster (which may also help put my pre-amp valves a bit with a hotter signal). As such my pedalboard (im VERY new to pedals) would be:- Boss TU2 > Compressor/Booster > Chorus > Ibanez PD7 > Linear Booster I used to use the Linear Booster when I had an all valve amp to push it into a natural Chelsea Dagger type overdrive. I guess if this compressor/booster comes out it would illuminate the need for the Linear Booster?
  15. Thanks for that JTUK. My current P bass has DP122's in it so supposedly fairly gainy/hot pups. Im wondering if raising them nearer to the strings will help too?
  16. My quest for the ultimate flatwound continues. To make way for the next batch I offer for your delectation:-

[s]Pyramid Gold Flats 45-105[/s]
[s]Cut for a p bass but with plenty (probably too many) winds round the pegs so should fit pretty much anything. Had around 5hrs play so still lots of twang left but just starting to get all nice and thumpy/mellow. Reasonably low tension so not finger breakers £20 delivered in UK[/s] 2. Pyramid Gold Flats 40-100 Cut for a 2+2 headstock and have come off my Jack Casady bass having rocked up id say around 10hrs use. These strings never go full on thumpy like la bella’s but these are certainly nicely worn in. Stick a set on a JC bass and you get that great beatles type sound. £20 delivered in UK 3. Sadowsky Flatwound B String (Brand New) Had to buy a 5 string set of these as they had no 4 string ones in stock. I have no use for a Low B £5 delivered in UK
