You know, I was quite surprised by my Ernie Ball Group III flats, much prefer them to Chromes and the Cobalt Slinky types.  Great all rounders.

@Kevsy71 That's interesting... though because of the many variables, there are probably as many different sounds as there are people using flats... this is one of my modded PB-50s wearing fairly old Fender 9050M:

I just fitted some La Bella flats to my '71 Precision, and they have a similar tone out of the pack to the 3 year old, heavily gigged set of Chromes they replaced (sound clips here: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/321649-la-bella-flats-gold-white-nylons-comparison-with-chromes-and-rounds/ )

i.e More mellow but with a nice thump!
