1.
+1 The music is alright, not a style I like, but alright. The lyrics are gash though in my view.
They're marketable which appears to be all that matters. That's what makes it not my thing. Some of the hooks may be inspired, it could easily be a good tune, but given the context (the generic beat, horrible lyrics and singing, over-production etc) they just don't mean a thing to me. Again, just IMHO.
2. meh. for the sake of not being an anti-social prick I have really tried and tried to listen to stuff like this, but by the end I always feel unmoved and uninspired. I then look to stuff like this in complete awe: the dynamics of the drums, the way the bass is completely locked in and the way everyone's feeling what they play really does move and inspire me. and that's only a video I found the other day.. I know stuff like that isn't appreciated by the masses, but I listened to stuff like that before I started studying music and it really ponders the question why other people won't spend some time to appreciate what these guys are doing compared to people like Britney. over producing music like that just takes anyway any "life" the music had, and to me just sounds as dull as the drone of a refrigerator. sorry for the angry tone, just giving my honest opinion.
3. you know that feeling when you hear something so groovy it actually hurts? ouch.
4.
Hope this helps http://www.studybass.com/tools/chord-scale-note-printer/
I was just lurking but thought I'd say thanks for posting that, very handy!
5.
Glad you're happy with it now That's the sort of setup I do on Jazzes - Lowest possible action and a very slight bit of relief in the neck. As for taking the lacquer off, why would you want to do that? The Geddy has a lovely neck. It won't upset the stability, though. That shouldn't be a problem at all. Perhaps get the luthier to satin lacquer it instead of the gloss you have at the moment?
not sure why I don't like it, but I prefer the neck on my RBX (not the shape, just the material). not sure if it's just because it's cheap, but it has a smooth mix of plastic and wood feel about it which is perfect for me. I wonder, is that what satin laquer is?
6. hey guys, could you tell me what you think about the bass in this? imho, it's the only formidable tone I've gotten thus far. it's just amplitube, lots of compression and EQ. I can't really say I like it... maybe I've just been messing around with it for too long that nothing sounds right anymore?
7. Acoustic guitar + fretless electric can be a beautiful thing
8. just got the bass back this morning, and by god... the action is the lowest I've ever seen on a bass, and best of all, no fret buzz whatsoever... pots and everything were cleaned, neck straightened and new strings, and apparently there was something slightly off with the knobs so they were also fixed. not bad for £25, eh? he will also take the laquer off the neck if I want, so was just wondering, is it a good idea? I mean, I would prefer it, but it won't affect the stability of the neck or anything will it?
9. mate, that was f'ing brilliant. that production is ultra tight.
10.
Someone's pulling your plonker. Get your bass back and send it to a real techie, or better still do it yourself. That said the Geddy Lee is one of the thinnest necks going. Davo
As I said, he's done one of my basses before and made it feel a million dollars, I'm sure he's just mixed something up. Thanks for the clarification though guys.
11. Thanks for the info guys, very appreciated. Stuff like this fuels my desire for a graphite neck even more...
12. you can try your hardest, it will never look as good as this
13. Hi all, my dad recently sent my geddy lee sig off to a mate of his who has mate who does repairs and setups. Apparently he's an absolute perfectionist and knows exactly what he's on about but I hope he's not right in this case... so anyway, the neck is slightly bowed, which is apparently because of the type of neck, and even more generally, a fender. Apparently constantly slapping and popping on most fenders can lead to bowing? But apparently my Yamaha (which I've previously had set-up by this guy, and I must add he made it feel like a £1k+ bass) is perfectly suited for it. Could anyone explain, is it true? I'm kind of excited to get the bass back, he's removing that horrible lacquer off the neck!
14.
its no problem
cheers!
Tone in = tone out. Does the bass sound the way you want it to as you are recording it? If so it may be that you are overcooking it in the way in (I explained this above). If you arent getting the perfect tone before you hit the record button then you'll always be in turd polishing territory. Work hard on that input sound and it will repay you tenfold.
"If you arent getting the perfect tone before you hit the record button then you'll always be in turd polishing territory" what an excellent way of putting it, even I understand it! But yeah, I'm getting frustrated getting best tone before recording (which is awful at best) and then trying to relax and just relying on post-processing to make it good. I'm guessing it's just my interface preamp being weak? That said, it's perfectly suited for crystal clear guitar recording so it's a trade-off.
15. I think it happens to a lot of us, including me, you've just gotta take charge. You can't blame yourself for what happened, it just sounds like there was a lack of respect on the drummers part. If I were you I'd start off fresh, have a clear set of goals and find like minded musicians with whom you have mutual respect. If that doesn't work, you can only keep trying!
16.
Do you play something that covers the whole spectrum note-wise, or just your favourite riff(s)? I usually play a verse and chorus of Peg, along with some random low B notes.
We always get asked to play and repeat a verse from one of our songs, which I find rather strange as it just gives everything away. I would much rather jam something out that, like you said, covers the whole spectrum. Not just note wise but dynamics and tempo as well. *may as well add: the verse we always end up playing is Superstition.
17. Dunno if anyone's mentioned them yet, or if you've already stated that it's out the question, but my geddy signature has a perfect high end. might just be to my ear (hence the reason I got one) but with all the knobs on full, it unleashes the most powerful bass sound with an almost separate layer of beautiful, harsh high end. again, might just be my ears and me talking out my ass. ears and ass is never a nice combo! *edit* just read the thread and realised that maybe you're looking for something way different (a kind of tone which I'm personally not too fond of) but I still stick by what I said.
18. I would also like to know how I can get a decent bass recording using the stuff I have. Instead of making my own thread I hope it's okay that I post this in your thread. Anyway, I have an edriol interface, and a bass. That's literally all my recording hardware, the rest unfortunately is software. Which brings me to my point, I've been using amplitube ever since I got the interface, and whilst it's amazing for guitar, with bass it doesn't sound good at all. The bass heads and cabs are terrible, but they're good for acoustic guitar. I've tried using just cabinet impulses, and no matter how much EQ or compression I use, I can't for the life of me get a good bass tone, and it sounds even worse in the mix. I know it's not my basses, I can get great tones out of them with my amp. I don't have any mics for the amp, and I don't think I'll have the money for one any time soon... Does anyone have any tips? Perhaps someone has the same kinda set up as me and can share their bass recording method? As always, any help would be appreciated!
19.
just a quick check,,, got to learn this quick, anyone know of any tab? cheers steven
http://www.tabcrawler.com/5404323/shed-seven/disco-down not sure on the accuracy, never even heard of the band before. hope it helps.
20. When I'm in the mood to listen to some deep funk, EWF is the first band I look to, and quite often it's all I need. That's how good they are.
21. just completely stop, flip all your band mates off, wait until they look at you in complete and utter shock and then proceed to walk out, befuddling everyone in the room nah, when i do a monster fill it's guaranteed that i'm gonna forget the next part, so i always make sure to know what key i'm in and what notes work well, so i can just mess around with it until i remember. quite a lot of the songs i've played live have been in C, and the low e string always works wonders over anything. of course this is only temporary, the way to truly overcome it is to premeditate where you're gonna do the fills, and possibly the phrasing ie. knowing that it's gonna land nicely into the next section. sorry for the weird post, i'm sleep deprived
22. Doubt there are any big fans here, but does anyone own this cd (or all volumes)? The only live video's I've seen are done with phone cameras on YouTube.
23. For guitar I use Jazz III's, but they don't really work on bass. I've tried a bunch of other ones, bigger, different shapes etc but only one has really worked for me. They have a weird groove and my thumb just falls right into place, and the angle is perfect for bass strings.
24.
I don't trust live albums these days. Far too much post production IMO.
I hate to say it, but even the best bands seem to think it's alright. My most recent DVD's are David Gilmour's 'Live in Gdansk' and the Rush 'R30 tour', and the audio and video really bothers me. They're both too glossy, if ya know what I mean. It's nauseating.
25. This may sound stupid, I'm an amateur "producer" after all, but I've looked and can't find what I'm looking for... so here goes nothing; I have a DVD that I got free in a magazine, and it has a shed load of drum samples, really decent quality and royalty free. Each sample is a .wav of each individual pad (kick, snare, hat etc..) and I was just wondering how I can go about using them. I've been using reaper and I'm really comfortable with it now, so I was kinda hoping there's an easy way to it. Perhaps there's a vst plugin which lets you load and edit the samples, and then trigger them with MIDI? I was kinda hoping this was the way, but I fear it's gonna be much harder than that. I have actually been wondering about this for a while, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance
