1. Another happy quarter pounderist here, for that clanky sound when you dig in, piano definition when you don't.
2. I frequently travel between Cambridge and Morecambe and would be happy to help move stuff, as others have said its always good to meet folk that you only know as an avatar and a witty sig. Must confess I was a bit disappointed that Nigel doesn't look in the least like his avatar though, nor does EBS freak. still have high hopes for Dr Dave, however. I'm sure there are plenty of others willing to do DIY couriering to make boring journeys more interesting. How could we organise this?
3.
He obviously does not have to worry about the cost of repairs or replacement of instruments. It's a great position to be in. Most of us have to be more careful, as money is scarce.
I doubt he's that minted. Just making a living, same as you and me.
4. After years of trying I'm happy and so are the rest of the band (though I do get complaints of beer glasses walking off tables). Works for me, ymmv: Precision, Wizard Thumper, Flats, play really softly at the end of the neck, 2x15s (homemade, similar to barefaced Dubster), svp pro with deep switch in and 50Hz boosted, 800w solid state power amp.
5. You need to know the power consumption of the amp, rather than its output. This will be considerably more than the output, and should be stated on a label somewhere on the chassis.Once you know this, choose a transformer at least that rating, try Farnell or Rapid Electronics. I know of no safety issues with using a step-up, care to elaborate, iipopes?
6. You can take the seats out of a Citroen Picasso - then it fits my bass and (not small) rig, drumkit, guitar amp, vocal PA and a passenger. Or take two seats out and it fits three mountain bikers and their bikes and gear. And it does 55+ miles/gallon. Your Clarksons might not think people acrriers are cool but I do
7.
The bass will sound better in good headphones due to the proximity effect. They don't need to be powerful in the low range like speakers do. If your headphones can produce the low end, and I'm only suggesting there are many that don't produce high volumes at low frequencies, many do, then your brain will fill in the missing bits and the proximity effect will take care of the lower volume.
I thought the proximity effect was something that happened with cardioid mics - how does this apply to headphones? Anyway, the reason I brought the subject of headphones up was to challenge the myth that sound waves take some distance to 'form'. The distance between headphone driver and eardrum is about, what, - 50mm? That's the wavelength of a 6.8kHz tone, and whether or not headphones reproduce the bottom octave they certainly deliver a few octaves below 6.8kHz!
8.
Manufacturers quote silly figures. Sennheiser say their pro 330s go down to 8hz. In reality the 3dB point is closer to 110, which is already half volume at low A. Your brain is very clever at putting in the things you know should be there but you can't detect.
51mon and I can tell the difference between 40Hz and 80. So can you. Try sticking a 110Hz high pass filter on while listening on headphones (or half-decent speakers).
9.
Psycoacoustics also plays a part. The headphones don't actually produce the lowest frequencies. Your brain just makes it up because you hear the higher harmonics 2xf 3xf etc. so you know the fundamental should be present. It's known as the missing fundamental.
Headphones certainly do produce the lowest octave, mine do anyway! Sealed circumaural phones go down virtually to dc if you shave your head :-)
10.
I was told by a sound engineer that because bass frequency sound waves are so long (measured in metres rather than centimetres), that they have to be further away from the speaker before they form fully and you can hear them correctly. Nice webpage with diagrams so you can envision the sonic waves doing their thing, http://hyperphysics....nd/diffrac.html
If this is true*, how come bass sounds so good in headphones, where the source is just a couple of centimetres from the eardrum? * it isn't. Where's Bill when we need him?
11. Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I do need to take someone with me who knows what to look for. Bilbo: nonsense. My Bitsa P is the best bass I've ever played, and cost me a tenth of the asking price of some of the coffee tables I've tried or owned
12. Anyone else get this when clicking 'view new content'? I get it on my Android phone and my Big Grown Up Computer running Opera. edit: actually it's 'sorry, no new content found'
13. Certainly not! A landscape gardener should be able to help or, failing that, a marine biologist.
14. Regular readers will know that I'm hot on stingraypete's heels on the bass guitar>eub>double bass road :-) I tried a couple of basses in my local shop the other day. One Hidersine, one whose name I forget, 1500 and 999 quid respectively. Both three-quarter. Both were really easy to play, no harder than my eub. The d and g sounded beautiful on both but the low end was RUBBISH. Really useless. I can't exaggerate how weak-tea, unmusical, un-bass they both sounded. No way would I be happy performing or recording with a wimpy tone like that. I'd have expected the depth of bass to be mostly dependent on the size of the body, but what else could be causing this? Will I need to get a 4/4, spend considerably more than 1500 or is there some setup secret the shop didn't know? Thanks in advance for advice and reassurances!
15. Joe, I have a kappa pro 15LF if you're interested? It's the non-neo predecessor of the 3015 range. Few hours use only. Looking for 60 quid shipped.
16. He was "unreliable" and "always late for rehearsal". That's a perfect description of my guitarist. Should I call the police?
17.
I seen a documentary years ago about UB40 and their famous folk playing dad and they said if we ever sing love songs , then we have sold out, we wont do that, we are for the people. A couple of years later , thats all they sang!!!! I really like their early stuff, but they came out with sh*te later!
To be fair to them though, the reason for the name Labour of Love was: they recorded covers of songs they loved so that the writers, ripped off by producers (hello Scratch!) and record companies, got some decent royalties when their songs became hits in the UK. In effect providing pensions for songwriters who were hitherto living in poverty. I always found UB40 blander than school custard, but their hearts were always in the right place.
18.
Very likely. It was a long time ago, I cant remember the theory behind why it makes a difference, and as I said, its not worth arguing or losing sleep over it. Just always done it the right way myself without questioning it. An open backed combo certainly sounds different from the back though, which is the same principle.
That'll because you're also hearing the contribution of the voice coil cap from the front, which is where the high end comes from.
19. If its a single speaker in a combo there really will be no difference connecting it one way or the other.
20. Thanks Pete! I occasionally travel to NW England, ill pm you.
21.
I also run an 8ohm 1x15 cab.
Gotcha. Good result all round then!
22. Musky is right. Bill and Ian are maybe assuming there's more than one speaker in your rig.
23. Why did you wire them in series?
