I could have supplied you Petz rosin for £6 a pot delivered to your door mate in Ireland. Jim
Already ordered I'm afraid, but thanks for the offer. I appreciate it.

You refine your gear searching for THE sound
fatback replied to WalMan's topic in General Discussion
Totally agree about electric, but wondering if it's not different for upright (and any acoustic instrument). As a noob to that game, I can see why there's a lot of chopping and changing of kit. But in this case people aren't looking for 'their' sound, they're looking for an amplified sound that bears some resemblance to their acoustic sound. Expensive and frustrating business, it seems. On the upside, I suppose if you solve that problem, it's job done. -
How many of you have more than one Bass...
Crapness is but a state of mind. Get thee to a band, sir, it'll do you the world of good
+1000 what he said in spades -
Just found stringzone.co.uk europe postage is only £2.50. Good on them. What is it about postage to here that makes sellers think they can charge transatlantic rates
Try Crehans in Glasnevin, Dublin. Not a supplier as such, but a great shop and I'm be surprised if they couldn't sort you out. Or try Tom Barrett in Galway too.
Great, thanks. I'll see if either will stick it in the post.

Does anybody know a supplier of rosin in or to Ireland that charges less than €15 for postage (Thomann )? I'm just trying to avoid that ripped off feeling.

Will Silverslaps & Evah P weichs work ok with a mag pup?
fatback replied to fatback's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks for the advice, gents. Maybe bumping steels and a mag is the way to go. -
One of the reasons I'd love to form a post rock band is so you can use whatever you want without scorn from people "You want to use a theremin? but we're a punk band!!"
omg don't mention the theramin. I'm in a running guerrilla war with our guitarist (nice chap, it must be said) who is determined to infiltrate that infernal machine into our set. I've threatened to quit. It's me or the ghost. To return to the OP, I would dearly love to have an acoustic pianist in our little combo. Nothing quite compares. After i chop his left hand off of course.

Another K&K model here ( a bit cheaper) and some good info. On my bass, this one is very feedback resistant especially placed on the G side of the bridge. k&K As for a preamp, quite a few people have said they get away without one with the k&ks even with ordinary bass guitar amps. In my (limited) experience, it does seem a lot of luck is involved in getting the right combination of bass, strings pickup and amp for a good sound. Pricey business .

I think I see where the confusion is. The change in the note (flat, augmented, whatever) is always thought of in relation to the major scale. So it's a flat third 'compared to the major'. What you were thinking is quite logical, but the wrong end of the stick.
Thanks for all the advise, i seem to have started a few arguments i think im leaning towards the squier as ive heard there isnt alot of difference between them and mim's, especialy not £250 worth. Any recomended preamps?
A fair few opinions in this thread: thread
I agree although I think modding guitars with new pickups, hardware etc. is a bit like modding cars with performance parts - the difference in the real world is pretty much zilch, but modifying is an end to itself in making the player (or driver) happier with what they've got, which hopefully makes them play better (although I don't know whether tuning a car up makes a better driver )
+1 except maybe for tuners. There doesn't seem to be much interest in them as mods, but trying to tune with cheapos in the middle of a gig isn't fun.

Love the Sadowsky outboard on my VMJ (stock pups) and bb400. Lately i switched over to a DHA DI/EQ and nice though that is, and I need it for my upright, after a couple of gigs I've gone back to the Sad. It's hard to define the effect, it's more than just warmth, and it's not colour in the usual sense. A richer sound, altogether classier. Darn. Another piece of kit i can't bring myself to sell.
If you want an hi-mass bridge, then you might as well get a Classic Vibe Jazz cause they all come with one on it and it is an excellent bridge so that would be at least one of your requirements sorted. If you want Bartolini's you're going to have to spend on a preamp too, why don't you get some Wizards, Frailin or even Lollars instead. Seymour Duncans do some single coil sized humbuckers that you can wire both in series and parallel individually and eliminate the unpleasant hum familiar with Jazz Basses, they are also very decently priced compared to Lollars and Frailins. here is a link to the SD's I was talking about http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...tkj1_classic_f/ I've had them on my Squier Jazz Moo Moo bass and they were the dog's blx
Thanks for this. I was going to post asking about jazz humbuckers. Sorted.
I have a 2009 MIM jazz. It is not noisy at all.
And I have a VMJ that's very noisy. I'm asking myself, what's the point of two pickups if I have to have them both full on all the time? A fix for that would be the first mod for me, I think, whether on a VMJ or an MIM.
How about coated roundwound strings such as Elixir? Don't use them myself but have heard that they reduce finger noise
+1 for Elixir. Little or no noise and they last forever. Nice feel too.

An important point is that cheap basses can be very good to play but let down by their cheap electronics. If you don't have much cash, go passive. You can add a preamp, onboard or outboard, later.
Chord charts are the best way and only way really I find I can get my head round a song if you are playing bass. You can then easily see the structure of the song, i.e intro verse chorus verse middle 8 outro etc and how to link each bar together to make a nice bass line. If you chart it out you will be then able to count the bars out for each section, so you know where you are. this way you will soon get it down. As the bass player you are the person who needs to know where you are, as its your job to lead the melody from one chord to the next, and the song from one section to the other, this is why the bass is such a powerful instrument. I always try to chart stuff out, even if I play the bass line different, I can see where I am
+1000 When i get into trouble is when I've been playing a part for so long I've forgotten the chord sequence and only remember the part. Linear thinking can lead to disaster imo
Not wishing to patronise you or anything, but why are you using the tips of your fingers for pizz? My tutor always nags the hell out of me if I don't use the full length of my plucking fingers... and I always forget to keep position fingers 1 & 2 in place at the 3rd position!
Don't worry about that! My ignorance is boundless. But I've no shame No, i'm using the sides of my fingers alright, unless things get hectic. True, I'm not using my right arm enough, and I'm working on that. I'm fine with the string tension for the left hand, but i had this idea that less tension might make rockier material faster to play. This has come up cos I probably need a new bridge (action on E seems too low at 7.5mm and I've run out of adjustment), and might as well get new strings fitted at the same time. I just didn't want to end up with strings I could slap but couldn't bow.
