1.
I have found that Warwicks favour nickel rather than steel strings, for me it seems to bring out the characteristics of the Warwick tone best. I have used Dr, D'addario and Dunlop strings to great effect.
Totally agree with this comment. Ive played a warwick thumb for 8 years now and use the D'addario EXL170 Nickel wound strings. They have always produced the sound i like and i find them easier to play.
2. Thanks guys, it would be nice if the sellers would leave a price on their ad just for a guide on how the market is doing. It would prove handy to people like me to know what the going rate is etc and what you can get for your money. Meanwhile the seach goes on
3. Hi all, Would anyone know of a good free web site that gives a guide price/valuation for buying/selling Bass guitars? Im looking to sell a bass and not really sure of the value of it and i wish to buy a fender but there are so many choices and the prices vary so much i just wanted to have a bit of a guide price so i can look at basses within my budget without paying over the odds. Cheers y'all .
4. Thanks guys i think you've convinced my to keep hold of my warwick and resist my impulses to get the Ibanez...for now! I think i will look out for a secondhand one when one comes available and that gives me time to save up. Cheers!
5. Hi everyone! I currently own a 1998 warwick bolt on which ive had for abour 7 years now and its a great sounding bass...i love it. However since watching a band a few months ago the bassist was using an Ibanez ATK800 which blew me away. The tone from it was awesome and the tonal range seemed never ending! It has quite an unusual look about it which i liked and it does make it stand out from other basses IMO. If i was to buy one of these basses it would mean selling my warwick to fund it which would be a bit of a wrench . I do have mixed emotions on this, espeacially hearing stories from other bassist that regret selling their basses. Do any of you guys know much about these ibanez atk800 basses? Any help or advice i would be thankful for. Thanks all
6. whenever i run out of ideas i tend to listen what everyone else is playing. I figure out the chords/key that the guitar is playing then listen to the to the drummer. The drummer being the most important to me. I try to marry up a melody to the drums from the chords being played. If you have a good drummer stick with him and listen carefully to what hes doing. Experiment with the notes within the chords being played. Always remember playing bass is as hard as you want to make it and sometimes less is more. Hope this helps...good luck
7. I'm a massive fan of Pino. I started bass after hearing him play with Gary Numan. He makes it sound like theres two basslines being played if you listen carefully....totally brilliant!http://youtu.be/ur6GcXXWrV4
8. Hi everyone, this song may not be to everyones liking but how does the bassist get this sound when he starts playing at 0.39. Is it the bass, amp or some kind of effect? I'm not too clued up on effects! Thanks http://youtu.be/BXyTacKCoak
9. Hi i used to used a zoom h2, which is a decent bit of kit. I now use a Panasonic FZ150 bridging camera which does a decent job. The sound quality is as good if not better than my old zoom and the picture quality is excellent. I bought it 2 years ago and was £350. Its probably a lot cheaper now as these sort of things go out of date pretty quick. I still use it now and you can take pictures whilst recording which is a bonus. Its got all the gear on it and a fantastic zoom which is handy if you have the camera further away. Its HD and has various settings on it. You get software with it as well. They are loads of video clips on youtube which might help you decide. Ive put a sample of the one i use on the link below. It was a bit close to us (about 10 feet away) the pub was really small and we play loud Hope this helps http://youtu.be/NoZA5WoRbIw
10. Thanks for your comment guys. They really do look great i can see me trying some out and getting one. I do like that fat modern tone to a bass and the warwick gives that with a nice growl. If they sound anything like that i will get one.Its been a while since i brought a new bass.....but dont tell the missus!
11. Hi everyone, I've recently come across Spector basses and really like the look of them. I havent tried one out as of yet but i intend to soon. The question is what are they like? have any of you guys and gals ever owned, played or know anything about them? I dont know anything about these basses at all. I currently own a warwick thumb bass which is brilliant but ive had it a long time now and was thinking of a change. Thanks peeps

13. http://youtu.be/8TS-ua3t2Ak Theres a good groove to this bassline. Its not as easy as it sounds! It sounds good when played on its own
14.
I'll shamelessly promote the works of Mick Karn - check out my recent post recognising his work and contributions to the field of Bassmanship. Here's one of my many favourites:
WOW havent heard this for years....clever bassist.
15. Hi all, i'm currently in a rock band that can kick ass and we are getting a bit of a following. However my heart is playing funk music. Only recently since reading a thread on here it has awoken my taste in wanting to play a bit of funky stuff. Its what i'm best at. A drummer that i used to play with of which we have a great chemistry has contacted me wanting to start something and i'm thinking this is exciting and interesting. It does mean however finding other suitable band members that share the same vein of music...whoever they are would have a good rhythm section but its hard work forming this type of band. Do i go for it or play safe and play in a band that i'm doing well in and see where it goes or do i follow my heart? I dont fancy playing in 2 bands. I would rather focus on playing in one. 2014 has offered me a new begining or do i play it safe?
16.
A few years ago, a guitarist I knew really well asked me if I'd stand in for a scratch band for a local pub gig. The songs were mostly soul and funk. I agreed, and as the gig was a week away, I asked for a set list. I already knew some of the songs, but as I was busy that week, I printed off chord sheets for the others. When I got to the gig, the keyboard player, who has been a fairly successful musician in the past, barely spoke to me. We started the first set with a couple of songs I knew. Then the keyboard player launched into half a dozen songs he'd written, of which I'd never heard before. I'm not the greatest busker, and I ended up making a hash of the songs. The rest of the gig continuedwith the same scenario...more songs that weren't on the set list I'd been sent. I hated the whole experience. Fast forward a couple of years. I was again asked to stand in for a different band, which was put together by our backing singer. I asked for a set list, which consisted of soul and funk numbers again. Guess who the keyboard player was? There were only a handful of people at the gig, and again he decided to play his own stuff, despite the fact that this time I'd actually learned the songs beforehand, spending a fair few hours doing so. I vowed never to play with this selfish twat ever again. If I was in the bandleader's position and needed a dep, I would do the following things: a) Ask the dep which songs he already knew and write a set list around those. Make him feel welcome at the gig. c) Stick to that set list. d) Not make him feel uncomfortable by playing unfamiliar songs. d) Realise that an audience would probably pick up on his mistakes, and ruin their enjoyment of the songs. e) Not let someone's massive ego ruin the gig. Any thoughts on this?
Keyboard player has an ego....only having a handful of people second time round in the audience says it all. I would like to see the keyboard player in your position standing in only to find a member of the band going into a 'solo look at me' spot how would he handle it. never play with him again....nuff said!
17.
A slight addition to Douglas's instruction above - if the URL you paste starts with https, delete the 's' (so it starts http) or it won't work.
Thank you! Happy 2014
18.
Copy the url and paste it in to the editor window, just beneath your text, that should do the trick...
Many thanks...happy 2014!

20. Hi this sounds daft me and my nephew Jamie have failed to put on a youtube on a thread on here....how do you do it?!!
21. This is a great thread! Keep 'em comin'
22. I wish Trace Elliot provided good service like this when i had a problem with one of their amps...fair play to Ashdown!
23. The artist with a signature bass gets paid to endorse their bass whether its money or free gear which in turn the producer of the bass hope you and i will buy to sound like them. Over the years i've realised that its not the bass they play to get their sound but how they play it. I'm sure the bass and rig they use gets their required tone but its their fingers and techinque that produce their sound.Look carefully at the different styles of say Steve Harris,Mark King,Flea and Geddy Lee....they all play bass completely differently with their fingers and produce their own unique sound. I'm sure when their contract has expried with that company they will use any bass that they feel comfortable with and the process starts again.
24. Hi, i too admire the sound of Jamiroquai whether its Paul or Stuart on bass. I'm sure they use certain effects on certain tracks but a lot of the sound they get is through their fingers and their bass guitars and amps....start by using your fingers, its cheaper and believe me its where it all starts. Its how you approach the strings that makes a difference.Watch and listen to how they play the notes....adding effects to what they do enhances what they play. Hope this helps, good luck!
25. Hi everyone, i've been wanting to get hold of a cheap bass and do it up for a bit of fun. I know a thing or two about wood, finishes and staining/painting but i'm not too clever on electrics but willing to have a go. The thing is what bass would you guys and gals recommend i get to do up? As i said i'm doing it for fun and intrigued what this bass will turn out like once finished. All suggestions welcome thanks!
