1. Cheers Joe, thanks for the advice. I've been working through Bob Magnusson's The Art of Walking Bass but I'm not finding it that useful at the moment so think I'll start using something else. I do have quite a few books on pdf that I can choose from and I'm just trying to find one that works for me at the moment. I have the Ray Brown book so maybe I'll give that a try for starters. I have a lesson booked in for this Sunday and he's going to look at my setup with me to let me know if anything needs changing. I moved the bridge myself as someone mentioned it was too high up the body and after doing some research online it seemed it needed to be over the F holes more. I think a new set of strings will be good as the strings on it look like they're knackered. I'll see what my teacher says though. I've checked inside the bass and the only piece of identification is a sticker saying 'Made in Czechoslovakia'.
2. Thanks for the helpful comments everyone. Looks like I got a bargain. Anyone recommend a luthier in the North West who could look at the setup? How difficult a DIY job is this?
3. Hi symcbass, any way I could find out for sure if this was an Excelsior?
4. Thanks. The school in question has just become a performing arts academy and has had a massive amount of investment so I think they were planning to buy new instruments in for the students and so were selling these older instruments.
5. Hi all, I took the plunge this week and bought myself a double bass. It's made in Chekyslovakia. no makers mark or any other identifying features. I'm a complete novice so I'm not sure if it's any good or not but I like the sound it makes so far and it's putting a big smile on my face when I try to play it so that's a good sign. I bought it from a music school who were having a clearout for £300 which I'm hoping was a bargain (what do you chaps and chapettes think?). The school is also selling a couple of Zeller Stentor basses for £250 and £350 (check Gumtree) which were very nice but I preferred this bass over them both. I'm genuinely surprised at just how different an instrument it is to bass guitar though. I've been watching loads of videos on Youtube that are giving me an idea of how to approach playing it and I'll be booking a couple of lessons in with a tutor some time soon to make sure I start off with some good advice and as few bad habits as possible. Any tips and advice for a newbie warmly welcomed. I'm on the hunt for a cheap bow if anyone has one available as I think I'll try my hand at Arco if just to play Mr Krinkle. Message me if you have anything available. Can anyone recommend any online resources or any books/DVDs that will be useful for me as a beginner to get started with? Any freebies greatly accepted Thanks all.
6. Hi, Is this one of the passive models or is it active? Do you know where it was made i.e. made in Germany or Far East? And - do you have any pictures of the back of the neck and the fretboard? I've just sold on my 1997 Corvette Standard 5 string, also my first 'proper' bass but I'm only playing 4 string these days. Miss it already though, these are great basses for the price.

9. I do like the look of this, I'll have to sell some stuff first though.
10. If I can get some of my stuff sold I'll be after this, need to raise funds first. How heavy are these and what's the impedance etc.
11. Sorry, didn't see the No Trades bit. Have a free BUMP by way of apology.
