1.
Yep. I wonder whats next? My prediction is an over styled chrome thing with LEDs everywhere and a name like 'EXXXTREME' as I said on Talkbass!
Where can I get this solid state, chrome EXXXTREME with the blue LEDs?
2. If you want to do it completely legit, then you'd need to get the permission of the copyright holders for each song. Send an email off to the MCPS to see what they say. It might prove more hassle than it's worth doing it the legit way. You shouldn't have any problems selling the odd CD here and there but your police officer bandmember might get into a little trouble at work if they take a strict view of this.
3. Just work on technique for now. Things like EQ, compression and string gauges come in when it comes to finding your own particular slap sound. I don't think Flea slaps particularly hard. He just makes it look like he's exerting more effort than it's taking - you know, the whole punk thing.
4. I hate these "selling-on-behalf-of-a-friend" listings but a friend has asked me to sell his Boss Octave Pedal (boxed). I have no experience using it so I can't offer any advice on it. But it looks almost new (apparently he hasn't used it much) and comes with its box. £30, cash on collection preferred (although could deliver within London). Paypal and postage a possibility.
5. I hate "selling-on-behalf-of-a-friend" listings but this is one of them. Rode NT2 large diaphragm condensor microphone for £125. Cardioid and omni patterns. Comes in its metal case. Read the reviews at Harmony Central. Cash on collection preferred (Central London) but delivery within London possible.
6. I agree with the two posts on technique above.
7. You're probably just getting a dull thud 'cos of your technique, not amp settings. Just experiment with how and where your thumb strikes the string (and how long it stays on there).
8. Plug out of the headphone output into a 2U power amp (to go into your 2x12 cab). It might look funny but then again it might sound exactly how you want it to sound.
9. Price crash bump
10. This is not the greatest song in the world. This is just a tribute. I've actually done the answerphone thing before (except mobile to landline).
11. In the studio you always have to decide which of the two will occupy the lowest position when you're EQ-ing. Live, I think the sound he's going for just won't work. A big boom might feel great, especially on its own, but you'll get all rumble and no clear start or end to the note. That's why you're having to use a noise gate. In Led Zep, remember that JPJ had a smooth mid sound with not much low end. Somewhere one of you will have to compromise your low end. I personally think that bass should go lower than the kick drum. But then I'm a bass player.
12. I don't know why but I'm picturing a midget frontman dancing around a mini Stonehenge.
13. It seems like you're going to end up with the most uncoloured set-up in history.
14.
How many strings do you need to play your basslines? Can you not do without one of them until the song finishes? Alex
If my low B goes then I can't play the basslines on a couple of our tunes properly (because of the missing notes below low E). I could either play them an octave higher or play the missing notes an octave higher. Either option sounds crap. But if my low B goes mid-song, what other option is there? I'd have to play the song out by doing either one of those two things.
15.
No matter how fast you are at changing a string, from the PoV of the audience it will be too long.
That's my philosophy. And that's why I'm picking up a back-up 5-string this weekend.
16. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=6064&st=0 This thread. If there's no way of controlling the ads then fair enough.
17. Well, yeah it could. Charlie Parker did get laughed off stage at an early jam session. Still, I think some of the comments on youtube in general are just plain rude, with no constructive criticism just insults.
18. There's no need to stop the lessons once you start playing in a band. If anything, the lessons will become more focused and useful.
19.
Today we decided we would probably get an unpowered mixer and powered monitor speakers... This sound like a good idea? Are any of those peavey speakers powered?
If the vocals are the only thing going into the PA, then a small mixer (I like Soundcrafts) into any powered speakers (or a power amp + unpowered speakers) would do it. Any kind of budget in mind?
20. I think that's one of the upsides of current SS heads v. valve heads: they make 'em tiny now. The Eden WTX-260 is stupidly small. I wonder if the technology that Oxblood talked about above could be applied to making miniature valve heads of a comparable size and power output.
21. I gig with my band. But then so did Yoko Ono. Does that make her a real musician?
22.
My current inspiration is not due to seeing a talanted player peform, but one of my mates rise to being a professional muso with a number one album under his belt, all within 18 months of the band forming.
Go on, spill.
23.
But hey,I get paid and the audience call us back.........and thats the point.
I think the point was whether or not it's worth having a back-up bass for when these things happen. A spare set of strings is cheaper and more portable but re-stringing on stage might chew up valuable stage time. I always have 3 spare 9V batteries with me btw.
