  1. Hmmm, I think if I were you, i'd consider something like one of the Peavey Firebass or similar - dirt cheap but bags o' power and happy down to 2 ohms if you did replace the 15 in the Mag for a 4 ohm unit.

Usually got for less than £200 - you could probably shift the Little Giant for a shade less than that?

    EDIT: Typos galore.

  2. Hi Michael,

The noise is the sort of thing you'd notice at home practising in your bedroom, but not in a live environment, that's for sure. It doesn't really get that much louder with volume and I've gigged it before and never had anyone mention it, even between songs.

I can package up no probs :) If you're able to let me know today then I can probably get it ready for collection tomorrow!

    Cheers,
    James

  3. I'm no expert, but I've noticed that amplifiers with class D power amps, they often seem much quieter than more 'conventional' amps.

Deffo check out another head before doing any more speaker work...although the Superfly let me down in a big way anyway, I was never happy with the output I got from it, and think the Little Giant is of a similar nature! As I say, even my Behringer who supposedly inflate their output figures totally trounced it for output.

    Cheers,
    James

  4. I MAY be putting the cat amoungst the pigeons here, but if it's out and out volume you are looking for (and I know the Mag cab can handle plenty of output as it had walls rattling when I had it!) you may want to point the finger of suspicion at your head.

I had a Superfly 1000, which I believe uses the same power amp as the Little Giant and it was a VERY quiet 2x500w (and yes, I was running it at 4 ohms before anyone chirps in), my backup Behringer BX3000 always felt MUCH louder.

Before you rush into replacing the speaker (as that RCL in the MAG is a corker!), see if you can borrow a head from someone who is local to you and try it with your cabs, I'm not a betting man but I would expect you to be surprised!

    Cheers,
    James

  5. I think it's largely par for the course, unless you're detuning and using overhead power cables for strings, they do exhibit quite a middy sound - however, that's what cuts through!

I was staggered last night at the tone from my P-Bass, it was earth-moving yet I could hear it, moved over to my Jazz (with GFS pickups) and suddenly I could hear myself, but wasn't any louder, per se.

    Cheers,
    James

  6. Hi all,

I have here a Behringer BX3000 300w head that has been my faithful backup for a while now, however since I have upgraded my main head this is now backup number 2 and realistically-speaking I can't see me using it.

First off, it works - however:

1). It's a bit noisy - It's been like it since I've had it and is only noticeable in quiet situations when NOT playing, otherwise you'd never ever know. Never got any worse and nothing else weird has ever happened, I'd put it down to being one of those things and never worried about it.

2). It's got some screws missing - this is down to me as I stupidly though I'd try to rackmount it, got it out, realised it wasn't a good idea and then lost a couple of the screws that secure the guts to the wooden sleeve. There's still plenty there though, it's not going anywhere....

So, £50 - that's a bargain for a solid 'does what it says on the tin' amp head - I even have the footswitch for it which I've never used! Also comes with a speakon->speakon speaker cable.

If you want it posted, it'll cost yer, otherwise collection or meetup half way in St Albans / Stevenage area of herts.

    Cheers,
    James

  7. Are you quoting anything in it? If so, delete all the quotes and have another go...

OR you may be using Safari - I sometimes get some bizarre error messages and am forced to go back to Firefox.

    Cheers,
    James

  8. Best - Soundslive.co.uk

Still to be rated - Bass Merchant, great comms so far but the cab I ordered is still floating about in customs - not Darren's fault!

Worst - Bass Cellar. I've often been in there with cash (or credit card) in pocket and their attitude sent me running for the hills.

    Cheers,
    James

  9. Hi all,

Bought this off this very forum from the fine Dr.Dave of this parish, however I need a few spare quid after the rather rash purchase of another fretted and I simply can't play well enough to warrant keeping it!

    The details:

Jaco 'Tribute' bass of unknown vintage, but with a very nice sunburst and super-comfy lined fretless neck.
'Fender' logo fitted and lacquered over
    Second string tree added
USA Fender P'ups and electronics added
    Badass Bridge added
    Scratchplate added

    Condition:
I've tried to take photos showing the 'relicd' nature of the bass - I'm not sure how much came from gigging etc and how much is inflicted but it really looks the part and is NOT over-done (in my opinion). The bass was recently taken to a pro as the truss rod had seized, he has managed to free it so all is now well on that front. A new set of Elites have been fitted too (roundwound). There are some marks from strings on the fretboard as is common.

    So, pics:

    Shipping:
I'd rather ship this neck-off, but it you wanted it posted as is, I'd recommend we try to find you (me) a hardcase to ship it in, contact me for details on that score. Actual postage cost will be in the region of £12-15 via UPS.

    So, how much then?
    **** SOLD *****

I'm asking for £150 + postage which is really what the bass owes me, and at that price it's a bargain and could easily be parted-out for that much and you'd turn a profit. It's a shame to do that though as it's a gorgeous looking thing with many gigs left in it! Paypal welcome, but you pays the fees! Collection especially welcome and i'll pop the kettle on (Stevenage or St Albans).

    Cheers,
    James

  10. It's always worth getting in touch with The Bass Merchant too - Darren is good people and his prices are often excellent :)

I too have bought SOME stuff from Thomann before - as long as your goods work ok and the transaction goes okay then you're fine, but believe me, in my experience it's a world of pain when they don't!

  11. Word of warning, my experience with Thomann was GREAT until something went wrong. At that point, I cannot begin to tell you the amount of grief it was.

If it's a cab? Who cares, you're unlikely to have that much of an issue. If it's an amp I would think VERY carefully before buying from there....
