  1. When I got my HX Stomp, it wasn’t to replace my main setup, but for a few reasons:

    1) ‘Fly-rig’ for gigs that require a much smaller setup.

    2) Backup for my main board should something go awry that takes it out the game for a few gigs. Unlikely but whatever haha.

    3) While I’m almost always going to use analogue drive and octave pedals, I’m ok with digital everything else….so it was a way to sell all of my random reverb/delay/chorus singles and use the HX Stomp for weirdness/modulation….which is where it shines IMO.

    4) As a way of adding a cab sim to my mix when I do the odd gig with a band that uses IEM’s.

So for points 1 and 2, I spent quite a long time tweaking the various patches to accurately match my main pedalboard, I had them side by side and would flip between the two. Because I know my main board sounds perfect in a gig setting, it meant that I’m referencing what I know I like tonally and not just trying set up the HX blindly with sounds that work through my headphones in my lounge. I remember thinking ‘oh that’s not how I would have it naturally…’, but trusting that my reference point (main board) was true, so just run with it. Lo and behold, tested he HX on a gig, and I was happy with how it performed.

There's a few Sunn clones, mostly guitar aimed though, fuzzdog do a model T, aion do a beta bass/lead (musikidng aren't selling aion pcbs atm though, just kits)

There's no DIY Pearce unfortunately - i breadboarded it a few years ago but I could never get it to sound quite right.

Yeah I found the Aion, might give that a go perhaps!

That said, shipping is a lot, anyone want one as well and we can split shipping one or two ways?

Pierce or Pearce? If the latter I'll be watching with interest - there is one in the studio (it's not mine though) and it really rocks. Hudson Broadcast clone is good for bass, great sounding grit (it's based on the old broadcast cast consoles of the 60's).

Oooo, Pearce! Yup, good catch, I’ll edit my post haha.

Will check out the Hudson too, cheers.

Madbean do a sansamp BDDI PCB, I forget the name of it. The growling krizzly would be a good choice too. There's a surprising lack of bass preamp kits around, at least full featured ones with good eq options.

I already have a Sansamp BDDI, so looking for something Sunn or Pearce based I think. Thanks though :)

  5. I’ve got an enclosure that I want to build something into, it’s a bit bigger (footprint) than a 1590BB, I think it’s a 6500 (without measuring it). Anyway, there’s plenty of space basically.

I’d love to build a fairly fully featured bass preamp, probably something quite dirty sounding, kinda like the Sunnbather from Abominable or the BC2 from Suncoast.

Any thoughts on a kit? Would want a PCB rather than a vero build.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

Unless you're needing, now or in the future, the MIDI functionality, or the optical connections, I doubt anyone would hear any difference; both have excellent, if not identical, pre-amps. If you've already the Gen 3, you're already all set. :friends:

They’re certainly not identical on the audio spec side, but I would personally agree with the rest of what you're saying.

Yes. I watched that video! I really need to know some in depth info of bass guitar quality versus the scarlet. Marginal or otherwise.

All the specs are on the website, but whether the perceived gains are marginal or significant will be down to your ears.

What I will say is that I have great sounding releases with artists on Spotify that are recorded using both Scarlett and Clarett.

  7. Put the below together for some heavier sounds, although will also work as a more generic ‘fly-board’ thanks to the versatility of the HX Stomp.

The DIY pedal on the left is a JMK Big Bass Drive I built a while ago, aside from an LED I need to fix, it actually sounds pretty awesome.
I have something else planned for that first drive space though, just waiting for it to arrive back with me (tis out on loan).

As always, CIOK doing the heavy lifting here!

  8. Hey @BassBeast,

Which generation of Scarlett do you have?

Ultimately, Clarett+ has a better audio spec than Scarlett, but it varies how much better dependant on which Gen of Scarlett you have. They're both current models (Scarlett Gen 3rd Gen and Clarett+), so it's about what kind of audio spec and features you want really.

Why remove the stock G&L pickup for an inferior aftermarket version?

    Inferior by whose standard?

I think it's a bit cheeky to call this a budget Serek, considering the Newport was Epiphone's idea in the first place.  Surely a Serek is an expensive/boutique Epiphone? ;)

Haha, I take your point, however I think it's probably whatever the current benchmark/association is. I fully understand it's originally an Epi shape, but whenever I see it now, my association is with Serek.

  11. Yeah, styling wise, if you want a budget Serek, these look good. But those tuners are all wrong. Why reissue a 'classic' bass with modern looking tuners?! Put elephant ear tuners on them for goodness sake!

I'll be sticking with my Midwestern :)

I've got a loan of a pal's '75 at the moment, and it's absolutely lush.

It's hard to describe - the body feels alive when you play it. Here's a little demo I made which doesn't really convey that feeling, but... y'know.

@wateroftyne Is this bass still knocking around?

  13. Yeah, sounds like a Scarlett will do what you need @ped, for transparency I do indeed work for Focusrite and I’m only here because our products have already been mentioned.

Scarletts come with everything you need to record, including DAW’s, plugins etc.

If you get a 2i2, your friend would be able to connect the bass to input 1, and assuming that the vdrums have a single output, the drums to the second output. If the drums have multiple outputs, then you’d need to consider an interface with more channels perhaps.

Anyway, as also mentioned, it would be possible to also just use the interface to play along with Spotify, you monitor your signal direct from the Scarlett, so zero latency. You only introduce latency if/when you monitor your signal via a DAW, and you’d only do that if you’re recording (sometimes) or wanting to hear your signal through an amp sim/effects etc. I would argue that if they’re a beginner, they won’t beed all that and just a dry signal along to Spotify will be grand.

Any other questions, feel free to drop a PM.

Hi, does anyone knows anything concerning the release date of the next batch? 🙂

Last batches were 1st Nov and 1st Dec, so with the understanding that Christmas/New years probably stopped 1st Jan happening, but complete and utter guess would be 1st Feb.

But if you follow them on Facebook, Tom will announce it there when he's ready.

I believe my Serek Midwestern bass has got a 40mm neck. It is amazing! Chunky as a 70's P bass neck, yet more narrow nut width.

    I think standard spec is 1 5/8"....or 1.625.....or 41.2mm
I agree though, my MW is a wonderful combination of chunky and very playable.

All Lakland 44-01/44-02/44-94 are 1.625, super comfortable and playable. 44-94 are obviously US models, so whoever ordered it might have custom-spec'd something else, but as standard they're 1.625. Oh and their 44-51 is 1.625 as standard too.

Yes I know it's 1.2mm more than the thread is asking for, but my fave 4 string necks! 😊
