    Hmmm,thanks for this. Si.

I haven't received an email reply and by the looks of your post, it might be ages before I actually got my hands on a Tarkin pedal. Think I will investigate the Fuzzrocious instead

Edit: I ordered the purple one at Joes Pedals you linked to 😀

    Oooo exciting!! ❤️

Let me know what you think. They’re an awesome family run company, so it’s an ethical purchase too! Lovely people!

As an update, I have dropped an email to Cog regarding availability and build time of a Tarkin fuzz. I recall reading on BC questions over whether they were continuing in business but their website looks active so hopefully I will get a reply

This was the latest update from Facebook. Still available but on Tom’s timeline….so as I mentioned, a little tough to get hold of at the mo.

  3. If you or anyone you know has some soldering ability, you can't go wrong with the Fuzzdog Big Fluffy Pie: https://shop.pedalparts.co.uk/product/bassblendmuff
    - 1590B (so same size as the EHX)

    - Mids control (optional)

    - Clean Blend

I believe they'll do it prebuilt too, which takes it to about the same price as a new EHX Green Russian.

Other than that, the Wren & Cuff Tall Font is probably a decent bet, twice the price though.
There's obviously a billion different Muff variants available, it's somewhat option paralysis. It's a shame it's not easy to get hold of a Cog Tarkin....THAT would be your first port of call really. That or a Fuzzrocious Grey Stache (love this one at Joes Pedals, decent price: https://joespedals.com/collections/pedals/products/grey-stache-standard)

Ref the diagram, that depends entirely on the pickups whether the phasing of each pickup and the wiring colours match.  From what you have described, @Sibob our assumption is that the two pickups are not a matched pair and happen to have different phasing.  As long as the pickups have insulated cases and are simply two-conductor ones, then the two wires can be fitted either way round and the pickup, on its own, will work fine - the black wire isn't actually an earth it's a...well...just a black wire.

There are fancy ways of checking, but the simplest and quickest is to swop the two and try it - and if it is no better, or worse, then swop them back and look elsewhere for the problem.  But I think I would bet a pint that it will sort it :)

    Ok......I owe you a pint! 😆

All fixed! Thanks for all the help everyone! Basschat strikes again!

    Brill, thanks for the clarification!
Going to try it in a bit!

  6. So purely for my own understanding......the wiring looks to be 'correct' when going by this generic layout I found via the Googulz:

If I swap the two cables as mentioned, isn't that just sending the Jazz p'up live to ground?
Or is there a suggestion that the Jazz wire colours aren't correct (ie colour for live, black for ground).

Again, purely for me to try and do some learning.

  7. My Lakland bass is a straight-up passive P/J, nothing fancy.

It was working perfectly, both pickups on full, sounded lovely, nothing weird.

Then I took it to a tech who, for reasons that are boring, removed the pickups and then had to refit them.

However, now, when both pickups are on full, they are horribly out of phase, thin and weedy sounding. I have to slightly back one of them off to get them working properly again.

I’ll post a pic of the cavity tomorrow, but any immediate thoughts why this might have started happening after the refit? Wired in a particular (wrong?) way?

    Cheers

Hi Si - that's a bit of a shock to read, as I know folk do exactly that quite a lot eg one IEM in the ear that's on the side giving protection from the drums and the other left open to pick up what's coming through one of the FoH PA speakers.

Can you expand a bit on why it's so bad please (and also if there's been any studies done on it?)

Just use one earbud leaving one ear open?

Really really bad for your hearing.

    Hi All,

I am doing more backing vocals but just cant hear myself with the onstage monitors.  I was wondering is there an IEM solution for this? Only issue is that it is only vocals going through the pA

Generally speaking, if you don't get moulded/fitted ear-pieces, any generic IEM earbud will let in enough ambient sound in order to monitor your bass and the band.
Flipping this on its head, I find that standard moulded earplugs (if you don't wear them already) can lead to much better vocal monitoring, as you naturally hear it more in your head.
