1. Apologoes for being a month late to this party, but I might have something of value to add here.. but then again maybe not!! I've built quite a few 4 and 5 string necks and my experience thus far is that carbon rods do make an improvement in the stability, allbeit small. The science of this is not my strong point however my brother has a doctorate in mechanical engineering so I asked him to calculate the advantage for me a few months back. There appears to be two schools of thought... use carbon fibre to replace a truss rod so that the neck is so stiff the tension gives just about the right amount of relief, or add rods along with an adjustable truss rod. We concuded that the former would need ot be calculated on a build by build basis and the variables inserted in to the equasion due to the organic and inconsistent nature of wood would make this almost impossible in any practical sense, so we concentrated on the method of using CF rods with an adjustable truss rod. Clearly in this context the CF would not need to make the neck so stiff that the TR could not adjust the relief, so we ran a number of different CF rod profiles - more on that later. The main point of this story though is that we concluded that the advantage was not from stiffness in the longintudanal axis, nor really from the lateral axis since the CF rods will always deflect, however getting them to twist in the 'helical' axis is nigh on impossible particularly when there are two rods because thet will cancel each other out. So it's our belief that a neck with two moderately sized CF rods permenetly bonded can and will move longintudinally (which you want), but you're far less likely to end up with a twist - which has in fact happened with one four string neck I built witout CF but has never happened with any of my necks with CF in it. As I said earlier he calculated several rod sizes for me and concluded (given the constraint of actually having to be able to embed them in to the neck wood so you can bolt on (if a BO neck) and actually carve a profile without revealing the rod) that the best option is a 4mm x 7mm CF rod and next best is a 6mm round rod. 6mm rods are widely available from radio controlled model shops, but I've only ever found 4mm x 7mm in China - Ali Express to be precise. So, after some trial and error and some science I've concluded that the best neck construction is to laminate with an odd number of laminates, a mixture of woods (a healthy dose of something like Wenge or Padauk and Maple), two CF rods and an adjustable truss rod. I've yet to make anything larger that 5 strings because lets face, it just buy a guitar! Jus' my two penneth worth!
2. Good choice with the Chestnut. On a whim I bought a couple of boards of Spanish Chestnut and have found it to make excellent body wood. Slightly darker than Ash but sounds like Swamp Ash and is even lighter, plus it's very stable once dried property. A real bonus is that it's sustainable because it's a by product of the Spanish Sweet Chestnut farming industry....
3. I bought an East U-Retro off Neil, a complete gentleman and scholar. He even printed the PDF off John East's website and included it for me and it turned up exactly when and as promised. You won't get a better Basschat seller. Cheers Neil! Pete
4. Hey JB - sorry I didn't see your post until now. Have been on holiday to a very sunny and warm Majorca. Yes it's still available. P
5. A final price drop bump.... Now £725 for a some green loveliness built by one of the country's finest bass builders... gotta be good. if it doesn't tempt anyone at this price then I'll just keep it I think.
6. Bank holiday, price drop bump to £750......
7. And sold......
8. Gotta go bump and price drop to £125....
9. Thanks Myke, I thought so too which is partly why I bought it... the other reasons are that it sounds great and was built by a master craftsman Any takers....?
10.
Fishing scales? that's a new one I'm good Pete, you sound as though you're having fun.
Yes it's an odd combination of fun and blind panic! The bass weighs in at 8 1/4 lbs according to my Leeda fishing scales... the heaviest thing they've ever weighed
11.
I misread that a few times - sounds exciting! In Leeds? Lovely bass btw - green is the best colour!
Hey Luke, Yes in Leeds... Rounday to be exact, right on the park... hence the need for as much cash as I can lay my sticky fingers on Turns out building in a conservation area has a pricetag!
12.
What is the weight please?
Hi Tom.. I hope you're well. I shall recover my fishing scales from the garage in the morning and let you know P
13. 13 x 400 x 400mm (I think) wedge acoustic treatment tiles. Approx 2in thick. Polyurethane fire retardant. I bought a job lot a few years ago when I built a small home studio and this is what is left over. £10 collected from north Leeds. They're quite bulky, but light so I reckon shipping would be OK and probably under a tenner. I've run out of picture space so I'll have a clear out and post photos shortly.
14. I've got a large, heavy duty wheeled flight case up for grabs. It was being disposed of at work and originally contained an orthopaedic training kit for hip implants and has the original custom interior but I got permission to buy it off them and my thinking was to strip it out and refit it to my needs.... but as usual with bright ideas it never came to pass, and now I need to clear the garage out because I'm selling my house. It would be an easy strip and refit though. It's in extremely good condition externally. It has two wheels on the bottom edge and a retracting handle at the top so you can wheel it about and crash it in to peoples ankles, just like all the folks at Heathrow! Two sprung handles on each end and lockable clasps. It does have the original corporate branding on the outside and the kit layout on the inside (including a picure of a pelvis!) so there's a real quirk factor...... Approx dimensions are 1000mm x 500mm x 500mm, but I forgot to measure it earlier - it's a good size though. What's it worth... lets say £[s]40[/s] 30. Given the size and the value, shipping probably isn't cost effective, but collection from north Leeds or I'll deliver/meet up for free within half an hour's drive or so. 15. All, I'm finally selling my Polytone MiniBrute 3. My dad bought this for me in the mid 80's so it's taken a while to find the strength to do it but an impending house build is forcing a good clear out. There's a label, partly removed on the back that says 9/85 and this would be about right since I was 18 that year. Its had a bit of use but never got seriously gigged because I soon afterwards bought a Session 4x10. So it is what it is - 100w of fet power in to a 1x15. Some minor scuffs to the vinyl covering but nothing major. Everything works as it should wit no crackly pots even after all this time. In all astonishing condition for a 30year old amp and it still sounds great. Quality stuff and perfect for small gigs and equally at home with bass guitar or double bass. £125 ovno, collected from North Leeds or I will ship at cost no issue - £15 seems to cover it. I'm also happy to deliver or meet up within half an hours drive or so. . Edit - I just noticed that one of the photos is cockeyed... apologies, I'll see if I can find the rotate button!
16. Hi All, I'm moving house, actually more accurately I'm building a house, and if anyone here has already done it I take my hat off to you because it's scary as hell while at the same time being one of the most exciting things I've ever done. Needless to say I need to slim down the herd and raise as much cash as I can so I'll be selling quite a bit of stuff that I've collected over the years and I'll list most of it in a consolidated thread, but worthy of a separate listing is my Shuker Jazz bass. I bought it directly from Jon in 2010 so it's a one owner extremely low mileage example.... It's never been gigged although I have used it at home for some recordings and practise, but it's always lived in its case and it is absolutely as new, not a mark on it. Spec is as follows: Ash body with black grain fill and satin green lacquer Cream three ply, one piece scratchguard Maple neck, satin finish Madagascar Rosewood fretboard (rare apparently) Brass nut Stainless steel frets Gotoh bridge Hipshot ultralite tuners Delano JC4AL/M2 Pickups (noiseless alnico split coils) Aguilar OBP2 preamp with passive bypass Black hardware It's currently wired Vol/Bal/Stack tone, but I'm happy to rewire it t Vol/Vol/ Stack tone if perferred that way. It comes with a Kases hard foam case which fits it perfectly and provides excellent protection. I had a chat with Jon about what this spec would cost now and he indicated £1400, so this has to be bargain at £725 [s]£750 (was £800)[/s], and I'll certainly listen to sensible offers. Delivery to UK mainland included.. please IM me for highlands, islands and further afield, or collection from north Leeds. More pics available
17. Rothko and Frost are also very good for decals
