1. I was pro for a number of years back in the eighties. I actually managed to earn enough to get and pay a mortgage on the proceeds, but only after others provided guarantees.... Some stability, eh? I'm confident that the "driving for a living" as previously suggested (regular 4 day tour started in Mablethorpe, to Brighton, to Hunstanton then Leeds, Our manager was called Mr Yoyo!), didn't make me any better player, but it sure was a great lifestyle choice at the time, and has never looked out of place on my CV.....
Thought Fender were most generous giving away their calenders wich had a custom axe photo for each month - why it even included a p bass. That was until I realised they were 2008 calendars ! Still, good for November/December
In the same way they were generous with the tee shirts, having eyed me up and down before giving away a nice looking long sleeved jobby, but an XXL (I'm a well obvious medium)..... Smacks of trying to clear the leftover freebie cupboard....!!! Not sure if this is very useful PR or the right way to impress the punters, I'd have been happier with something useable, even if just a mousemat or summat... If there are any big chaps out there who could make use of it, let me know!!
  3.
This all gives me some good food for thought, I am going to the SW Guitar show tomorrow, so will see if there is anything there I can play with, but please do keep the ideas coming!!
I couldn't find anything to play with...... Some nice basses, but no processors that I could find... aw!

Well that was fun, though didn't get to spend as much time there as I had hoped, but met Stuart, EBS_Freak and saw the ferrets' babies. I played a few things and then spent a very long time talking to Bernie Goodfellow, having my thoughts changed about who will make my custom bass! I had originally set my heart on a new Wal, but having played EBS_Freak's GB Rumour I am now having a very serious re-think!! Thanks for your time guys, and next time I shall ignore smart-alec suggestions about leg apparail, and save myself such embarrassment!!
It's the custom for basschatters to walk around with no trousers on. Pants are purely optional.
ah well, as I don't own a single pair of pants, no decision to be made....
  7. I do like the idea of an expression pedal.... Perhaps a bit of wah-ing would be good!
  8. I sincerely hope my new one won't cost this much!!!!!
  9. I don't normally use pedals, just occasionally my trusty old Aria Chorus, but it died yesterday!! I also tried a Basspod, but hated it... Way too digital and complicated and nothing on the floor to kick! I am thinking of buying a new multi effect, mainly for a bit of chorus, octaver and some echo/looping. I don't really want to spend hundreds, as it don't think I'll get full value from it, what should I buy??
  10.
As for f'ugly expensive basses, I still think the Ashdown Loadstone Primal wins hands down
Its a very nice bit of wood, but I think it could have been used better turned into some nice fruitbowls or something!! The headstock is effin orrible!! BTW, I cannot got onto the Street website to see these beasties.....

I'll most probably be there on Sunday, but depends on the weather. I've got the kids for the weekend, so we'll pick the best day for "indoors-y" stuff (they both play too, so will be as keen as me!!)! I still haven't hooked up with many Basschatters, or been to any BassBashes, so is there a secret handshake I ought to know about, or do I just wear the usual red carnation??!!
  12. Ok, so time to hear it for the session guys, the busiest, and who's bass lines have been in the charts more than most:- Pino Palladino - among many others made the Paul Young sound IMHO Herbie Flowers - too many to mention.... and cos I got soul, I'm also with the Duck Dunn fanclub!
  13.
Good advice guys. Seems that if this hypothetical band has gigs going into December then the hypothetical leaving member should offer to play at all those gigs unless they get a new bassist in before then.
Lots of advice for you there then! I'm with the "keep it amicable, but businesslike" ones. No-one wants to be put out or let down, particularly of you want to stay friends, but it is really important to set an exact deadline, a last "I'm still in the band" gig, whether you intend to continue depping after this or not, or things will drift, particularly their lack of incentive to get on with replacing you!
  14. Oh yeah baby!! I just had the best email!! I am on the waiting list!!! I'm drooling already. Paul wasn't able to confirm timescale yet, but at least I'm on. WWAAAAAAHHHAAAAAYYYYY!!!!! I know I put this elsewhere, but I know you guys will forgive me for being really excited!!!

  16.
+1, my dearly departed 440 used to eat anything you threw in it.
and that was a baby!! Nice car though, my mum had one... went like a rocket!
  17. Sorry guys, forget the hedgehog jokes, there is only 1 car for the jobbing musician, particularly if you also have to transport drummer, PA, you name it.... It can only be a Volvo estate... 240, 740, 850, V70... Very little difference in capacity, my flightcases go across the back, and with the seats down about the same floorspace as a transit van! Well maybe not quite, but I have transported Amp, 410, 115 cab, AND the two top speakers and stands from our PA, and the Guitarist with his gear too.... Not forgetting mic stands, cable trunk and my three basses... My V70 does 40MPG on diesel, so not as juicy as you would have thought either... Oh and its a proper car, not an MPV or converted van, so comfortable too!! You can pick up an old one reasonably cheaply, safe in the knowledge the diesel engine is good for 200,000 miles Nuff said!!
  18. OK, so two guys on YouTube and Challenge TV have drawn a complete blank. It wasn't screened on Challenge. Has anyone got any further thoughts? .......please
  19.
did you buy a MIJ fender jazz & Trace Elliot 4x10 combo from me back in 1991? I lived in Hounslow,Middlesex at the time.I'm sure the guy who bought it from me says he was either in Mud or used to be. just curious
No, wasn't me!! I mostly played my Squeir '57 JV (with Fender on headstock) precision or olive ash Wal Mach1 and I had a salmon Pink '62 reissue squeir precision as a spare. I mostly used a TE 1115 combo, which weighed a ton but sounded great. Not my heaviest or best sounding rig though. That title goes to the Kustom Sound head (the black quilted one!) and a Fender 2 x 15 cab which literally shook itself to bits one night!! Heavy, but my best sound ever!
  20.
That's not embarrassing!! I saw Mud play Newcastle University back in '84 probably. It was a great night
I don't ever think the work was embarrassing!! It was 'effin brilliant!! I am one among a number of guys here who can actually say they've paid their mortgage solely from being a bass player. I never reached the dizzy heights of being successful in any of the (several) other "original" bands that "oh so nearly" signed with major labels, and I almost made it with, but it was my job for quite a while (did some session work for a while too). I really hope as many of you as possible get the chance to say that. (now I am sounding old!!! I am only 48 honest!! Hopefully you will soon see the fruits of my latest band, "Soulfire", in the Exeter area, a 10 piece soul/jive/rock/boogie outfit. We sound great, but getting that many people to rehearsals is like herding cats!!!) The embarrassing bit is the 3-2-1 vid!!! See it and you'll get why!!! Help me find it and you can ALL have a laugh at my expense! Just as a teaser... for the show recording we had 2 drummers, both miming with Roto-toms and wearing flippers!!! The sound was recorded in a studio in London, can't remember which. I think we had played at "Golden Sands" in Mablethorpe the night before, and we did the session, full band, in no more than three takes, before getting back on the road for a gig on the south coast that evening. We would almost certainly have then headed up to Newcastle or Glasgow for next night, as our manager didn't own a map or have a clue about geography! It was a Yorkshire TV production, the show being done late afternoon (in Leeds or Bradford perhaps, I think!). YTV either sold the shows subsequently, or something, I don't know, but ITV now own the rights....
  21.
I saw Mud live in about 73/74 at Leeds City Hall......great gig !!
I did '85 to '87. The original band split in 1981 and Les worked with a Bristol based lineup until '87 then worked with a London based band from then. I don't know who followed me, but I filled the shoes of Dale Fry, who I think now is at UWE music dept in Bristol. He used to have a black precision with mirror scratch-plate like Phil Lynott. As said earlier he was an incredible showman. We used to do a huge number of university and club gigs, and he could always be counted on to get a reaction, whatever the age of the audience!
  22.
I had a quick skim on Youtube and didn't find anything from 3-2-1 but did uncover his from Blue Peter in 1996...
That isn't me sadly! Gosh he looked ill there, poor sod. In addition to his addiction to booze and fags (his famous breakfast time quote was " I couldn't possibly eat anything on an empty stomach, dear boy!!") he struggled with terrible psoriasis, but boy could he work the crowd when he was on form! Thanks for all the help so far guys, I knew I could count on you! I'll definitely try some of the fan base...
  23. yeah, I figured as much. So you must have been the guy running backwards and forwards on stage before the start with the sunburst Precision (i think)?
  24. Yeah, its a long shot, but you never know!! And anything I can do these days to dent my street cred has got to be done!!
  25. Yup saw the gig, the boy done good with less than 8 hours to learn the set.... The only bass thing that didn't seem to come off too well was the "solo-y" thing with Roger Taylor and the upright bass, but Neil didn't do this, he did it with Jamie (Moses)... I'm guessing this was something he had rehearsed with Danny. I have to say though, that I'm more than a little dissapointed though that Brian didn't see my Dep advert on Lemonrock, seein as like I would be there anyway! My rates would have been very reasonable.....
