1.
Nice one. Hope you'll be happy with it. Thats quite a jump from a 2x15 to the MB......
Not so much a jump as a slow but invigorating sonic journey through time, interrupted only by various other un-satisfactory set-ups and varying degrees of poverty!! On Wednesday I used the 151 at a particularly loud blues Jam night I go to occasionally, and at one point there were there were two harp players (should be locked up in my view - all mad as snakes!), and four guitars. There was absolutely no problem with lack of punch. I am well used to the shaping effect caused by the VPF, from TE days (In fact, with it up too high, the amp feeds back way too easily!!!), and this will certainly detract from the midrange, but with it off, the sound can be made incredibly middly, even with my precision and particularly with my Wal (but then you'd have to be well surprised if it didn't!). I'd quite like to try putting a valve pre-amp in front of it instead of relying on the VLE, as I can't seem to find a setting on this that doesn't make the sound muddy. Others experience or comment would be most welcome!
2. Well, the GAS got the better of me, and I did it. Yes, I know, by comparison to some of you out there this is a tiddler, but I've done all that before, several times. My first proper rig was a Kustom 250, complete with black quilting and a Fender 2x15 to die for (all the joints unglued with the battering I gave it, it literally shook itself to death!!) , and when pro in the 80's I used a trace 300w head with UV, 4x10 + 1x15 stack, but my poor 47 yr old back couldn't begin to load the car now (and anyway need to save my energy for wakeboarding!!). So, I bid and won my CMD151P on the bay for £625. It arrived looking completely unused, complete with the QC tag on. On first plug in (with an OBBM lead of course!) I fell in love. It is only 1kg heavier than a Roland Cube 100, and not much bigger either (a bit deeper), but bugger me is it ever loud! And the bottom end is earth moving! I have never owned an amp (until now) which sounds perfect for all three basses (JV (Fender badged) Squier Precision, Wal Mach I Fretless and Dean Edge 5) with all the tone controls on flat response, and no effects or boosts. Play with the tone and the VLE/VPF and it does enything and punches through effortlessly with two guitarists. It is simply amazing. Time will, of course, tell whether the little monster will shake itself to bits when gigged twice a week, but having gigged it twice now, I am delighted (understatement of the decade!!). If anyone out there was wavering as to the "Do I go lightweight, and what will I lose if I do?" question, then have no fear, just get on and do it, and if you can possibly afford it make it one of these!! Watch out, for a less biased, proper review later, when I am less excitable!!
3.
Hi, Did you find a band yet? Looking for a bass player for a new Blues band based in Devon. We are all old boys and some play in other bands. Dave
Sorry I didn't spot this one until just now! I've been away for a couple of weeks. I still have nothing permanent, so interested in exploring anything, particularly blues! Get in touch by all means!! I''ll PM you my contact details
4. Just over six hours to go! You can all step up the bidding now....!!
5.
Fraid looking back it may be a little too big for what I need. I was after a cheap Roland Cube alternative..! Something to carry in one hand, bass in t'uther. Hmmm, never mind, I need a double bass god dammit
At the moment its AJ5string's at £25, so he's up for a real bargain at the moment!!
6. Only one day to go now.....! Get yerself a real bargain!!
7. I've edited the title to reflect true wattage, cos I made a mistake.... Awfully sorry! It changes nothing though......, its still very loud, and would make a great practice amp or first gigging amp......
8. Waaahhaaayy! We're up to £25 again!!
9.
Shh, don't let the northerners find out our true sordid colours.
Oh, come on, they've got everything to be ashamed of themselves! Their sheep have shorter legs but do tend to kick more.... (so they tell me....)!!
10. latest update......, the £40 offer has just withdrawn (they don't do that on the bay, but I do understand , so its back to £20 at the moment....
11.
Dave! I dont expect that talk from you. (but those sheep are rather nice)
Dare I suggest that worrying those sheep might also be better excercise for your fingers.......?
12.
I have family and friends around there who could collect you see I'll have a think!
That'd be well convenient!
13.
Could you ship? How close to exeter are you? Cheers! Alex.
I live closer to Newton Abbot than exeter, and work in Exmouth, so happy to deliver anywhere between or within 10 miles ish of either for a pint! I was PM'd last night, and we now have a highest bid of £40.
14. There you go chaps.....! See! Tatty but classy! I was wrong about the wattage, its actually 80w, but doesn't sound it at all! I used it at a rehearsal on Monday in my local pub (more "free music for the lads" than rehearsal!!) , and it was easily loud enough to deal with two guitarists with 50w fenders and a drummer who uses telegraph poles! It is 70cm high (on its castors) by 57cm wide and 32cm deep. No idea of the weight, but the scorpion speaker is no lightweight, and delivers the goods! Feel free to chime in with a bid at any time up to midnight on Sunday!!!
15. Well good on yer and good luck Matt!! Now the rest of you feel free to chime in, while I see if I can find some celebrity provenence (harhar!) to add value to this ordinary, slightly tatty but great sounding amp!! Photos tonight, I promise!!
16.
£20?
Ah now yer possibly bein daft! Not the offer, thats a really good starter for 10! I think someone will better this, but I thought you were interested in the other one! I will genuinely take the highest bid on this wot I have received by Midnight on Sunday! To hell with evilbay, lets do it here, in public!!!
17. I really am open to any offers on this one, guys! I won't be offended! I know its old but works well, and would make an ideal first amp. I used it last night at a rehearsal just to make sure! Pics later this evening.....
18.
Hi Do you have the box/manual etc. and do you have a PayPal account for payment? Please let me know. Ian
Hi Ian, Answers in correct order: No, yes and yes!! I didn't keep a box, this got left behind at the music shop. I do have the manual/receipt, and I do have a paypal account. If you need it shipped to you, I have plenty of access to packaging to do the job properly. Where are you? Kevin
19. Hi again guys, having a bit of a clearout! These TKO80's were absolutely great amps, and this one still is! I bought this second hand a good few years ago from a guy who was using it as a practice amp for his keyboard. He practiced in the garage, so its quite tatty, but cool with it(!), it works a treat, and its tone and volume easily belies its age and its 80watts! It really is very loud! Its a Scorpion speakered one and sounds great. I used it for the odd gig, but its been in the cupboard under the stairs, unused for quite some time. It doesn't rattle or flap, it just does the job well, and would be ideal for a first, cheap starter amp, easily enough for small gigs. I am completely open to offers on this one, as I am trying to raise enough to afford my new MarkBass 151 Jeff Berlin and any contribution would help, and it'd be good to see it back to work, as it has a good few years left in it!! I'll try to get some pictures up if I can!
20.
Dammit, so tempted but need to spend money on double bass. Carrying a large Trace head and cab to rehersals has started to become a bit of a pain in the ass now! Mmm lovely tone though!! Hmmm, I will think about it..! Gonna be like £200? Hmm.. Matt
Any further thoughts?
21. I have spent the last six months trying to find a new band, sorted now, and need to trade back up to a gigging amp again... These are just amazing amps! I knew they were good, cos everybody says so, but it has well exceeded my expectations! Easily loud enough for band rehearsals, and the flexibility of the tone and amp modelling is brilliant for recording. with loads of clever bits and pieces, like effects and a "record out" which goes straight into the desk, cutting out the speaker but delivering everything its got, from smooth jazz tones to a full overdriven Entwistle sound. Crikey, I'm sounding like the Roland marketing department, but it really is good!! I bought this to use for recording at home and practicing, its six months old and has been out of the house only a few times as the rehearsal room has a rig I can use. It looks brand new, and has never been stretched anywhere near its limits. The very best new price I have found for a Cube 100 is £269.00, so make me an offer yer mother would be proud of... it'll be money very well spent!!
22. For simplicity and power, its got to be Black Velvet - Alannah Myles For just the smoothest fretless, Wherever I lay my hat - Paul Young. Rock on Pino!
23.
There are a few Devonians tucked away on here. We'll be having a Devon social next!
Could be on to something there! PS. I wish I had spotted that laney you were floggin in time, I'da proberly had that of of you!!
24. Happy birthday old chap!! Nice to see I'm not the only old fart around here that looks younger than his age or ought to given the low down job we do!!! PS. what the hell is a pointy? Sounds like I might need one of those! And yes, you've got to have a fretless!
