My best purchase is without a doubt this '94 Warwick Thumb. The only 5 string I've played in nearly 30 years that has a decent B string and actually feels and sounds like it's supposed to be a 5 string and not just a 4 with a bonus floppy cable stuck on the side. It's an ASTOUNDINGLY good instrument. That growl... Worst? Nothing comes to mind...

Exactly this. I play my Hofner in a completely different way to any of my other basses - always with a pick, palm muted, no distortion. It's very instinctive though, I don't go out of my way to play it differently, it's just natural. And I'm rewarded with most luscious thud imaginable!
