1. I bought a Jazz pickguard from Nick. Very straightforward and very helpful. I recommend you deal with him.
 2.
I think the issue with this is that some people are mad keen until it comes to parting with the cold hard folding and then they bottle it at the end. More a fear of the unknown when it comes to pushing the button rather than being not genuine, I feel.
Sean, I didn't mean to suggest anyone was not genuine but only that getting enough people to commit was difficult (and with the new Lakland LEs arriving it may be more difficult still). When the planned LOG bass was a Hollow Body (about 18 months ago) I would have been in if the colour was right but IIRC candy apple blue was the winner and that was a total no for me. Then IIRC there was a revote on the colour and translucent (Gretsch) orange won but Lakland couldn't do translucent orange on a Hollow Body so that fell through. Then it moved to a BG and I might have been in for a 4 string but again I had no interest in the colour chosen (teal green I think) and then that one fell through.
The good news is that the number of orders needed to make this a reality has dropped from thirty to fifteen, which makes it a lot more realistic however I believe it's still a couple short though the rosewood/maple option might sway a few waverers.
At fifteen, they've got a much better chance and I do very much like the translucent butterscotch.
If this doesn't come off I think I'll order a Status Streamline or something else unusual. I've never had an instrument for a birthday pressie and with a "big birthday" this year I'm determined to make it something cool.
There certainly isn't any shortage of nice basses to buy - even when they are expensive Fender copies.
 3.
Theres no telling when or if the LOG bass will be made IMO, especially with all the new Skylines they need to get out first.
I think you're probably correct - the Loggers have been trying to get this together for about two years. I'll believe it when it happens.
 4.
rosewood is definitely an option now. With dots. Seriously.
I hadn't realised that ... but I still have other plans.
 5.
I am. Anyone else?
No, too many strings, maple not rosewood, I'd be more tempted by the inca silver DD with matching headstock, and anyway I have other plans. Although I do like the butterscotch.
 6.
So it's a Lakland P-style bass with a chisonic pickup in a mint green colour, yes?
Butterscotch (not green), Lakland P pickup (not the Chisonic), maple with black blocks:
 7.
hi Dave, yes it is 10 hole no truss rod cut out plate. I bought it from a seller who advertised it as just a fender Jazz plate. It was for my VM fretless Squier Jazz (also bought a torty plate at same time, which I used on my bass, the pearle one is the same) so yes it phisically fits (pickup to neck pocket) a VmJ but weather the holes line up I don't know. I can accurately measure a few holes so you can check it against yours... front of pickup cutout to ctr of hole at top back corner of neck pocket = 87mm, hole at same dimension but bottom of pickup & bottom neck pocket= 99mm, back of pickup c/out at top to adjasent level hole= 25mm, hole at same dimension but level at bottom pickup cutout= 41mm, ctr of hole at bottom of neck pocket to ctr of hole dirrectly bellow it= 86mm. hope this helps...Nick
OK, those measurements look very close on my CV Jazz - so I'll take a punt on it. PM sent - well it will be sent in a minute when I actually write it.
 8.
Surely , if you're playing a walking bass line, then it's probably full of chromatic runs which could require a 4th note. Or have i got the wrong end?
I'd say you've got the right end.
 9. Is it ten screw holes and no truss rod cutout? And are you saying it fits a Squier VM Jazz?
 10.
hartke also have these.
And also, I've heard, Giannini and DR. Colours on Giannini are: E - red A - black D - green G - purple
 11. Thanks to all of you for your tips. I don't know what we are going to do - I don't like this buying gear by committee.
 12.
One of the chaps knocked this up:
You beat me to it, but I didn't notice your thread before I posted.

 14.
and a light violet for a B string. Does the colour actually change according to the gauge or with the nominal note?
It's definitely the note.
 15.
Thanks for your efforts - I'll take a punt on some D'Addarios since I need some new ones for the Jazz. I've gone off Rotosound strings - they lose their zing too quickly. Shame as I almost live next door to their factory!
Well, let us know what you think if you get some D'Addarios.
 16.
Hmm. On mine there's no silk wraps - ball ends are yellow, red, blue and green E to G respectively.
Well, who knows, but my bet is still that they are D'Addarios. There's several threads on Talk Bass that mention VM Squiers not having the strings that the Squier website says - specifically not having Fender Super Bass 7250ML. It's would seem odd if they are D'Addario but I can't myself see what else they are. Maybe what you are calling yellow is what I am calling brass, and maybe that black is a dark blue. The colours as I named them is what D'Addario calls them and they are exactly the same as other D'Addario strings I have used. I really don't think they are Fender Super Bass 7250ML. But who knows?
 17. Well, I just dug out the strings that came on my CV Jazz and I'd say they have typical D'Addario colour coded ball ends: green - G, black - D, red - A, and brass - E, and no silk wraps. If you look at the enlarged picture on the Squier website for both the CV Jazz and the CV precision, you see the same colour coded ball ends and no silk wraps.
 18. To the OP: Fender Super Bass 7250ML, the supposedly stock string, has black silk wraps.
 19. So ... do Fender Super Bass 7250ML have colour coded ball ends? Anybody know? Do any Fender strings have colour coded ball ends?
 20.
Thing is, we can go either way as 'factory' really means the shop it was bought from in 99.9% of cases, and inspection and setup varies from shop to shop. Some leave the strings, some change them. Tit for tat really.
I'd be surprised if many shops were going to the expense of changing strings - especially on a £250 bass!! I'd be even more surprised if all the shops were changing them for the same colour coded ball end strings - whatever make they are.
 21. A bit of research suggests that other companies which sometimes colour code ball ends are: Giannini; Hartke; DR; and ... anyone else?
 22.
Really ET? Despite the Squier website saying the factory fitted ones are "Fender Super Bass 7250ML, NPS, Gauges: (.045, .065, .080, .100), " Unless you mean D'Addario make them for Fender.
Well, I don't know what they are for sure. My Classic Vibe Jazz (and others too I believe) also came with the colour coded ball ends. I don't honestly know what they are but I took them to be D'Addarios because of the colour coded ball ends. It was discussed before here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=68650&hl Do Fender Super Bass 7250ML have colour coded ball ends? I was unaware that they did but if they do then I expect that's what they are.
 23.
Does anyone have an idea of the make of strings fitted to a Squier CV P as standard? I quite like them and would like to know what make they are. The only clue I can give is that the "balls/bullets" (?) at the bridge-end are colour-coded.
D'Addario
 24. From the Lakland website:
We at Lakland are very excited to have this technology in our process. Fret filing the manual way is miserable. Think about it - sanding metal! All of my employees are musicians. 4 or 5 fret files a day - everyday will take a physical toll. We have done it manually because it has been the only way to get the basses to play their best. The latest Plek technology relieves my techs from the physical damage. They can now use their heads and not their hands. The Plek is only as good as its operator, meaning a thorough knowledge of fretting is necessary. Our Plek will be operated by the luthiers that have fret expertise. We are just getting started. The end products have been wonderful - just like our hand work.
25.
Recently learned about these Plek machines. As primarily a guitar repairer does this mean i am beginning to be replaced by a machine?! Does anyone have more info on them? http://www.plek.com/en_US/home/ anyone experienced a finished product? Slightly scared, Jack!
My Lakland Decade, like all new Laklands now, was PLEKed. It's very smooth and even up and down and across the fretboard. But I believe the machine still needs a skilled operator - it's not robots taking over - and anyway at Lakland it's $200 for a PLEKing. And a PLEK machine is about $10,000. So I think there'll still be work for you.
