1.
... Neither me nor the guitarist remotely had Led Zep in mind ...
Perhaps a bit like Led Zeppelin didn't have Willie Dixon and others in mind.
 2.
.....because I'm finding that I just keep pricking up my ears at the stuff they have 'borrowed', in many cases I'm sure, unconsciously.
So, don't read the great myths of the ancient world if you want to carry on liking Hollywood films.
 3.
All cultural works are derivative.
... and sound 'new' when the listener doesn't know the derivation.
 4.
Simple solution - don't listen to rock music.
Yes.
 5. I just listen to music, I don't really think about whether it's new or old. Often it's new to me even if it's old in some other sense. For example, I've been listening to a lot of Ethiopian stuff which I guess was recorded in the 70s and since, but it's all new to me.
 6. I play what suits the band and its music. I'm not at all 'at one' with my instrument and don't have a 'signature' sound, although I usually manage to sound like me whether I want to or not. I'm not looking to 'nail a tone' and rarely play with the EQ; I'm much more likely to change where and how I hit the strings with my right hand.
 7. There's probably a test for 'this bass kills' as well.
 8.
... Has anyone ever accurately weighed a new bass when they bought it to test out the notion that the cell structure of the wood loses moisture over the years ...
I hope not. Quarantine would be necessary in order to rule out other causes of loss of weight (such as wearing away of the poly or chips and dinks) and causes of increase in weight (such as collection of gunk in the fingerboard and frets).
 9.
Can you name them please, I'd really like to check them out. Thanks, Steve.
Here's a few; Percy Jones Boz Burrell Rick Danko Colin Moulding
 10.
No not deliberately. This has been a fun topic. It shows how passionate about music we all feel and we're never always going to agree. The Mozart thing was just thrown in because he really was a genius. I don't think anyone can compare with his genius and the influence he had on music.
Mozart may well have been a genius and it may well be the case that no one can compare with his genius and he may well also have had a massive influence on the development of music. However, his audience has been tiny compared to the audience of The Beatles.
 11.
yeah, they all seem so guilty about something, it's only rock n roll folks
It's not only rock 'n' roll, it's life (and death).
 12.
Beatles tunes and jazz musicians have resulted in some shockingly bad jazz A lot of Beatles tunes on jazz albums are commercial decisions made by misguided producers. I don't want to generalise but (will) most examples of jazz plus Beatles tunes are less than the sum of their parts.
I've no dispute with that.
 13. None of these Youtubes proves anything of course but I'm just enjoying it - so Penny Lane in the style of Bach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8CJpGuURPY
 14.
If i'd have heard Ornette Coleman or Albert Ayler playing a Beatles medley in the 1960s i might agree with you. They changed Pop music but certainly didn't change Jazz, Electronic or Classical music.

I could list a thousand Beatles songs recorded by Jazz artists. Most of these were simply musicians recording pop songs of the day. Something Jazz musicians had done long before even Be Bop and putting their slant on it. Jazz musicians recording Beatles songs didn't change music. It may have shifted a few more LPs that''s all.
It may well have shifted a few more LPs, I wouldn't dispute that at all, but your claim has changed from the first post quoted above to the second post quoted above.

 18.
ffs someone needs to get the floyd into therapy and help them all get over Syd Barrett hey, what a feckin yawn they all are with him. i'm not a floyd fan so dont get what all the fuss is with SB, what exactly was so great about him?
Without Barrett there never would be any Pink Floyd. But that's exactly what there was, Pink Floyd without Barrett. Artistic bereavement. New Order probably had a similar experience.
 19.
have to say Rick Wright (rip) was a really underated keyboard player, did he do any solo stuff outside of the floyd?
Two solo albums: 'Wet Dream' (1978) and 'Broken China' (1996) and various albums with other people including Syd Barrett's 'Barrett'.

 21.
Will do!
Thanks, let me know what happens.
 22.
Shall I ask if they can put you a custom set together at the same time?
Yes, please, that would be good.
 23. That sounds on the long side. The 760N-XL is only 37.75" and silk is close to the tuner.
 24.
Would a string the same length as the ones I need do for you? If so, I could ask them to run off an extra E string and package up a third set (with the other three at regular length) for you?
Hang on, I'll have to measure it. Where is the 38.75" measurement? Is it silk to silk? Ball-end to silk?
 25.
What length do you need? My Veillette sets will be 38.75" long.
A-D-G are standard long scale but the E string needs the extra long version which, even for the 760N black ones, are difficult to find in Europe. I got them direct from La Bella last time.
