1. I've been noodling on a bass using a 'harmonic capo' - like a normal capo but it fingers harmonics only! The capo is designed for normal guitar, but it does work (sort of) on bass. I don't know of any demos to show on bass, so here's one on the guitar:
2. Well, not to get in an argument about prices, I have seen Thunder's fetch £300 on eBay... admittedly before the recession though. Like I said, I'm not familiar with the Concorde II, so couldn't comment on an accurate price, but putting a good reserve wouldn't do any harm would it, even if my guess was slightly out! Or, you could just let the auction run, I think you might get a nice price. The analogy of it being a cheaper bass when new is a little poor. Squier's were cheaper basses when introduced, and look at what an original 1982 Squire will bring now! Not saying this bass is equivalent to an '82 Squire though
3. Westone's have a loyal following, and rightly so... mine was a superb bass and yours looks absolutely mint. Thunder A1's can go for upto £300 ish if mint. Don't know your mode mind, but if eBaying it I'd put a good reserve of £300 - £350. This website might help: http://www.westone.info/ I believe the guy who bought mine runs this site I think.
4. Why not an older Trace Elliot combo? They're built like tanks, even though small ones are heavy, you do get lots of omph for little financial outlay. There's a TE 1215 at 300 watts on the 'bay at the mo.
5. First of all, welcome I guess there isn't much difference between the two instruments, but I would say that if you're unsure about bass setup, then get a pro to do it. The cost of a setup maybe considerably cheaper than repairing any damage you may do through 'well intended' tinkering
6. A superb investment for little financial outlay: Pros: A very clean and uncluttered representation of your tone - you'll hear everything Incredibly musical EQ specifically for bass with loads of tone shaping control Onboard compressor/limiter that's very very good indeed Can be run on batteries Will power a cabinet to 10 watts making it an ideal practice unit too (not with batteries though) Robustly built/superb build quality Balanced (very quiet) DI out for recording is superb Used with a powered cabinet, you'll have all the tools you'll need to gig Cons: Simply none at this price Essentially the PJB is the same as the Briefcase unit but with out the 100 watts amp. I love PJ stuff and can't praise it enough.
7. One of the best bassists on the planet... why? Because he makes it look some goddamn easy I'm absolutely loving the clip with him and a 'real' drummer though... apparently there is a recording of him with a real band doing a concert somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it!
8. DAMN! You guys have it going on! Superb band mate, and absolutely sweet bass playing and tone. That is a dream band you're in. Once again, superb!
9. Why not get yourself down to local pubs and clubs supporting singer/songwriter artists and start networking. Most people are very approachable and if you explain that you're looking for opportunities in supporting other artists as a bassist you never know where it might lead. The worse that can happens is someone will say no.
10. For something really different try some Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher. Some incredible bass solo pieces by him and a highly underrated player. I saw Ralf Gauck at Bass Day this year, and his solo bass interpretations of Beatles tunes was really original and refreshing. Certainly one to check out. Also Lawrence Cottle of the Gareth Williams Power Trio is a superb tasteful player as well.
11. This is such a good video for all the wrong reasons Brings a smile to my face every time I hear it... the tune is catchy as hell though!
12. Thank you guys to everyone who took the time to reply and email me, it's been really helpful. I do like the look of the Zenith basses, and the shout out about some basses not being true hollow bodies is a good eye opener. Back in full time employment again after Christmas, so I can see some investments being made once the readies start rolling in
13. A Rob Allen Mouse 30... I would love one of these... check out the solo
