Hello I picked up this Antoria P Bass a while ago. Having tinkered around a bit it is now set up nicely. Great slim neck that plays really well. For a budget P Bass clone I'm impressed. I'll probably upgrade the tuners at some point but my main issue is the pickup. I'm assuming its a Maxon pickup (?) but it's not sounding great. Age may have got the better of it. I thought I would tap in to the formidable Hive brain of Basschat for some advice. Would it be worth getting a rewind / repot of the pickup, or could anyone suggest a quality replacement that wouldn't entail routing out the pickup cavity? If I did go down the replacement route, I would need something the same size as the original (approx 7cms X 3cms). I will be upgrading the wiring harness too. Basically any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance 😊

I have to agree. The VS4 is really well made and plays really well - but I can't get on with the pickups - too harsh and metallic. I've tried several string sets, lowered the pups a bit, but I'm now considering a pickup and pots swap - the Aguilar is a good shout.

For me, yes absolutely . I have an Electra VS4 - the Sandberg basic P bass. It is super bright. Apparently they have 500 pots as opposed the the P's 250s - it's a job taming the brightness when all you really want is good old vintage P thump. They are fantastic instruments - really well made and for the price range they do punch above their weight - but a P bass it ain't!

For the money they are indeed. That Plec'd neck is pure quality. My only reservation with Sandberg is how bright and "modern" the pups seem to be. I have an Electra which I reserve just for slap - it's too bright and decidedly non vintage for my taste. Even with the tone rolled right off.

I feel I'm among understanding friends here, so thought I would share a confession I have about my 2013 Musicman Stingray HH. It is, without doubt, a fine and well crafted instrument with a great tonal range and a fantastic neck. The action will sit as low as I want and it is no effort to play. A wide strap compensates for the weight and with the TI flats I have on at the moment it sounds great. In short, it is the best bass I have ever owned and I like it - a lot. But (this is the confession bit) I don't LOVE it. Feels almost sacrilegious to say this but I've had her for 2 years now and play every day. I don't know what it is, but I don't feel as free on the fingerboard as I do with other basses. It might be something to do with how the bass sits on me. It feels maybe a little too biased to the right. The neck is amazing, but altogether it just seems to lack that rubbery funky freedom (that's the best I can do) I've had on other basses. For precision, tone, quality and looks (sunburst with tort pickguard) for that matter I can't fault it. I'm just finding it a little..... sterile? I just wondered if others have had a similar experience with Stingrays. I played a Stingray 5 recently, and that seemed to sit differently against the body. I'd be really interested to hear your experience of this amazing bass that I seem to be surprisingly ambivalent about. It can't be just me? Can it (Janet)?

Hello, Just dropping a line or two to introduce myself. I'm in Leicestershire, mid 50s. I played bass back in the 80s and after a loooong break I picked it up again, probably five years ago now. Since then it's been a daily obsession. If I'm not playing bass I'm thinking about bass, window shopping for basses on the internet, reading music theory or taking basses apart and swapping components out etc. You know how it is! 😆 I'm mostly playing a stingray HH. It's a beautiful, well crafted instrument, but I do keep jumping back on to a beat up cheap old fretless for fun. Over the last year I've been schooling myself in jazz to stretch my playing (and brain) a bit. I'm most at home with a good funk line. I'm no Joe Dart, but maybe one day! Anyhoo - nice to be part of the community. Look forward to basschatting with some of you in the future. 😎
