In the circles we work in POS is always PointOfSale, never Piece Of S**t
I'm a retailer, so I'm in the same boat, but I always, always read it as Piece Of S**t first and then have to re-translate. Ironically, whenever we're offered a "free POS display stand with orders over £xxx", it turns out to be a real POS. And don't get me started on my ePoS system. Or is it EPoS? Or ePOS? Actually, I think they've started calling it a "multi-channel revenue stream enabler" or somesuch to save us the hassle of CamelCase.
The Big One is (IMHO) a marketing embarassment waiting to happen. Q - What cab do you use? A - I have a Big One.
I see that as a reason to own one. Seriously, if I was naming Alex's cabs, I'd probably go for Compact = The Throbber, Big One = The Engorger, Vintage = The Double Throbber, and so on. Or I'd go for silly mythological names like Bahamut or Barghest (that'd be one for a cab with a bit of natural "growl"). I'm obviously not in marketing. -
Bwaah count yourself lucky, my day job involves a product called UltraPoS, and yes spell it wrong you get pistol whipped by marketing
Maybe marketing should have thought about that a bit more: I read that as "Ultra Piece of sh*t". -
Bakithi Kumalo: Hats off to you, Mr Kumalo. Paul Simon's Graceland (with Kumalo) and Paul Young's No Parlez (with Pino Palladino) were probably the first albums on which I really noticed the bass as a kid, and they're both full of lovely fretless work.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
BottomEndian replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
OK, the description wasn't quite as daft as it sounded. Not "mahogany" but stained rosewood. Up close it's pretty obvious but from any distance at all no one will know whether or not it's ebony. The semi-lined edge to the fretboard is really nice, especially for an inexperienced fretless player like me. They've actually taken the trouble to use little bits of fretwire to create the markers. The bass has clearly never been properly set up. The action is far too high and part of that is the nut slots not being deep enough. It must have been a bugger to play - unless the previous owner used it for slide bass. He said he'd bought it (second hand) in Spain in 1975 when he was a teenager; he also said that he'd never changed the original flatwounds and I can easily believe that. They are the DEADEST strings I've ever played (and I collect vintage Hofners from the 50's and 60's, remember) with absolutely no 'ring' to them at all. Best thing about it is the weight. I sold my 1972 Ibanez 2369B because it weighed 11lbs and was wrecking my back, so I was quite worried that this one would also be a pass-through bass for the same reason. In fact, it's one of the lightest basses I've ever played. I'll run it through the scales later, but I'm guessing at about 7lbs. I'll take some piccies at the weekend and stick 'em on my TinyPic site.
Congratulations, sir -- you appear to have bagged a good 'un! So, are the fretwire "markers" raised above the surface of the board like actual frets, or have they just laid the tang part into the board, leaving a flat surface? -
I've had two Wesley basses and I've still got a Wesley hollow-body electric guitar. The basses were OK, although the frets and nut left something to be desired. Oh, and the electronics too. The hollow-body is an absolute dog to play, but it sounds oddly good. Really thick, meaty sound. My mate has a Wesley hollow-body Tele copy, which is great. Good fit & finish, great sound, but it's the exception to the Wesley rule. In a nutshell, I think their QC is really hit and miss. If it was a first bass, it might put you off for life, or it could be a real keeper. What is it, £100? Save a bit more and get a Squier, SX or something like that. And play it before you buy it, if you can.

I've bought cables from Dave a couple of times. It's been simple, efficient and astonishingly fast, and -- most importantly -- the cables are brilliant quality. A noticeable improvement over Planet Waves, and well-priced to boot! Oh, and the Speakon-Speakon cable's about as thick as my thumb. Awesome.

Hmmmm. I was reading the review of the Hartke combo in this month's issue, and I got the niggling feeling I was missing something. Some crucial piece of information that might help me put the whole thing into some sort of perspective. Couldn't quite put my finger on it... and then I realise. How big's the speaker? Seriously, I've looked through the article five times and I can't find it anywhere. When I look at an amp setup, I want to know two things first: how powerful it is, and what the speakers are. I can't be alone in this. For me, in the parlance of the interwebs, this is a "review fail". This doesn't take away from the improvements we've seen over recent months. Keep it up, guys.

Particularly accurate description
BottomEndian replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Looks like the seller's balanced out the honesty with some Grade-A bulls**t. £200 new? Don't think so. And I've had a couple of Wesleys I've got from their eBay shop, where they quite often do auctions starting at £0.01, so I've got instruments well below their normal price. The seller could have got this for £40 or something. -
Alex, I'm thinking of getting an SVT 2 Pro and was wondering about the sound a vintage would give me. Would 2 Compacts give me more nastyness than a Vintage? Only problem with Compacts would be using one at 8 ohms would give the SVT problems, so I've probably just answered that one myself. Doh! Steve.
And remember that (if my weighing's right) a Vintage is lighter than 2 Compacts. Oh, and it looks cooler. Join The Vintage Revolution™

HELP! POD X3 Live - Problem when using with an amp
BottomEndian replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
And make sure you're not accidentally running a TRS balanced line into an amp that's expecting a TS connection. Actually, I don't know if it'd make a difference, but everything's worth looking at. Nice new avatar, BTW. But it does confuse me -- I don't "recognise" you! Just shows how much we rely on subconscious visual cues for recognition. -
Scott Walker's bassist - or any interesting bassists
BottomEndian replied to stewblack's topic in General Discussion
Anyone know who played bass on Scott Walker's 1970 album 'Til The Band Comes In' ? Ta.
Carole Kaye? I'm joking, I'm joking. No, I'd like to know the answer too, for all Scott Walker's early solo stuff. No one's properly credited on anything (although IIRC Scott Walker gets credited with the guitar for "30 Century Man" on Scott 3). -
M4L666 part-exd his Bass PODxt and foot controller for my monstrous Peavey rig. Lovely fella, easy to deal with. We met up at my rehearsal room, money and gear changed hands and everything was smoooooth. I pity his neighbours now.
Here's a really interesting looking Ibanez 2366 fretless P . 200 quid seems a bit steep though, what do you reckon? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IBANEZ-2366FLB-FRETL...93%3A2|294%3A50
"Fretboard is mahogany"?! Looks like no mahogany I've ever seen. Still, I like the semi-lined board -- makes you look like you know what you're doing, but you've got a little safety net. Haven't seen that on a bass before.
And here's something I've never seen before, and probably never wish to see again: a Hondo Explorer! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hondo-Explorer-Bass-...93%3A2|294%3A50
Agreed, it looks ass, but it probably sounds and plays OK. Apart from the neck dive, presumably. It looks like the same neck and hardware as my Deluxe 830 P copy, which I have a lot of love for. -
Great kit for the money. Not sure if they run comfortably into 2 ohms as Peavey claim though -anyone have experience of this?
Yup, always done it (apart from gigs where I couldn't be bothered to lug two cabs). Both my 410 and 115 were 4 ohms each, so 2 ohms overall load on the heads. Never had a problem with either my Max 450 or 700, running for 3-hour rehearsals or all evening for gigs where everyone on the bill has used the rig. And that's in hot, sweaty rooms with loud, active basses and plenty of grind and fuzz coming through them. Rock solid gear.
