1.
Are there any vids of him playing fast? The examples above are very spacey and perhaps not representative?
(Slapping it up big-style in that one. Trouble is, he's tuned to near-standard pitch, and his ultra-light piccolo strings do that bwwwoooowww drifting-out-of-tune-when-you-slap-them thing.) (10-string bass in that one -- 5 paired courses, mainly tuned in non-unison/octave intervals.) (Not particularly fast, but a definite groove going on.) None of these are the reason I like Michael Manring. I love the spacier, more melodic tracks like "The Enormous Room" and "Selene", and particularly this one (no visuals available for this tune, so you can just appreciate the chilledness):
 2.
Joe Longthorne doing Shirley Bassey
Oh lord. That's quite the mental image.
 3.
to be fair, I heard jamiroquai the other night - JK sounded awesome live, played it back on my mate's sound recorder and it was diabolical! Not sure why....
I suspect (but I don't know) there's a relationship between high SPL at the ear and tuning difficulties. Kind of like "the louder it gets, the more flat you'll hear it" (or maybe sharp -- like I say, it's only a suspicion). Obviously, in the gig situation, you're hearing things at roughly the same SPL as the vocalist, so (s)he will sound in tune at the time. Listen back to it later, with volumes at a sensible level, and you'll hear how much the ear was distorting the tuning. I've heard this effect several times with recordings of high-volume situations, and it's come up on BC before in relation to tuning sounding different when you nip to the bogs and the walls cut the SPL down to size. Seriously, next time you're at a LOUD gig, go to the toilet and listen to the vocal tuning. Yeeeuuchh.
 4.
Chaps, I have to be careful here, but I work at the studios. No bull. The monitors are under black metal grilles at the front, curved edge, of the stage and there's some seriously big speaker boxes flown in the air too. Trust me it's loud and they hear EVERYTHING on stage. JBJ used the monitors, no IEM's, and JLS were on IEM's. Cheers, Jon.
Thanks for the info, Jon. So they can hear themselves. Yikes. No excuses then.
 5.
They mime.
Oh god yes, in that horrendous group-singing thing in the results show. Terrible miming. Ugh. Not for their proper performances though.
 6. Don't usually watch X Factor, but Mrs Endian has done for the last couple of years. It was on tonight as we munched through dinner (still is, I think), and I noticed that I couldn't see IEMs in any of the performers' ears. Fair enough, I thought, there'll be some wedges down front. Waited for the camera to pan... nope. No wedges to be seen. Then Bon Jovi came on and JBJ did one of the most sexually limp-making vocal performances I've ever heard. Dull and lifeless, like he wasn't really sure of himself (I'm no fan, but the guy should be a pro at this stuff by now). I would've thought he'd have IEMs, but no. So... does anyone have inside knowledge of how the performers actually hear what they or the backing tracks/band are doing in the X Factor studio? If there's inadequate monitoring, it's no wonder they're so often out of tune and unsure.
 7. Ah, that's a shame. Still, we could look after any basses you're not using while you're out of the house. Security 'n' that.
 8. James Jamerson played loads of open strings, using them as passing notes across pretty much any key. It's one of the things that defines his style in my eyes. I play shedloads of open strings in my stoner-doom bass role. Especially the drone side project.
 9.
Knackers!
It's only another 48p direct from Amazon. Well worth it IMO. Definitely in my top ten albums.

 12.
Try this turn-around sequence in C major: ...
And again, the tab:
C C#dim Dm7 D#dim Em7 Eb7 Dm7 Db7 --17-- --15-- --17-- --17-- --19-- --18-- --17-- --16-- --14-- --14-- --15-- --16-- --17-- --17-- --15-- --15-- --15-- --16-- --17-- --18-- --19-- --18-- --17-- --16-- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------
Another lovely little sequence, Major!
 13. Just picked up the new issue, and the first thing I turned to (having thought it was a pretty interesting idea for a series of articles) was Mike Dimin's "Art of Solo Bass" bit (p.78-9). My eyes fall to example 3, the little F blues he's written... and those eyes can't make head nor tail of what they're seeing. The time sig says 12/8. Well, there aren't many bars here that look remotely like 12/8 at first glance. Ignoring the pickup, the first two bars are 11/8, then a daring 10/8 (two 5/8 bars combined, by the look of it) in bar 3. Then back to the 11s, and... wait... an actual bar of 12/8 at the Bdim chord. Having then watched the Youtube video of the lesson, it's pretty clear what's happened (the second note of the first full bar -- and all other notes like it -- should be a crotchet, not a quaver), but it's such a simple mistake that even a brief glance over the stave indicated that something was amiss. It's just a shame that my first glance at this month's issue was a huge c*ck-and-balls of an error.
 14.
Fantastic bass amp, and thats a bargain right there!
+1 This particular example used to be mine, and I still miss it occasionally. Brute force in a black box.

 17. Yes. Yes. Yes. That's just awesome. And it's nice to know that it's obviously not just bassists who think that Bakithi absolutely makes this track.
This does nothing for me. nothing at all. to me i wondered why they bothered covering the tune anyway. someone might as well have said lets do some noodling in G for eight minutes. i just dont get it.
+1. It kind of... misses the point of the tune in a way. This is what it's all about: Yes, even longer, but more... kind of... visceral. Mmmm. Nice.
 22. Oh my stars. That's just... mmmm. Wow.

 24.
thats more valve and vintage porn i just dont need
Bah. We can just revel in the delicious dichotomy of our lightweight micro-heads with their accompanying monstrous cabs. Let's face it -- the load-in's easier.
