1.
Far from livening up a debate, that kind of 'repartee' actually closes debate.
I agree, or at least it certainly closes the doors to reasonable debate anyway.
 2. Greg Phillinganes is probably the only person to look to for inspiration on how to make synth bass sound good, I include him before even Stevie Wonder!
 3.
You did a 9 on Talkbass ?!! A nine!!! How did you stand the Cliques and all the my Sadowski is better than your custom shop Fender, and the, Nothing cheap is any good. Snobbery and guff ??
THAT'S why I like this forum. People aren't arsed (not everyone, anyway) about the price of gear, the general consensus a lot of the time is that if it's good, it's good, if it's not, then someone else can buy it, each to their own etc. The amount of b*llocks talked about gear at Talkbass is unreal, discussing the idiosyncrasies of two of the same amps with slightly different cabinets to the point of total pedantry, like it matters more than life itself. Gear bothers me, but to nowhere near the same extent, and that's certainly one of the reasons I like Basschat.
 4. Lovely looking instrument, really love that worn in look and yes, if I had any cash I'd probably take a punt because I've wanted a ray for a while!
 5.
Fair comments, especially the last point. However, as a solo instrument, the bass is pretty damn ugly, the timbre is terrible, the definition beyond playing 8th notes is crap, unless you have lots of treble and avoid the lower notes. That's why some folks are adding strings, playing chords and tapping with two hands, adding treble and chorus, just so their bass playing can sound more like a regular guitar. There are people who like to eat fermented whale blubber for breakfast, but they are few and far between.
I largely agree with your views but this part entirely depends on two things; how good your sound is, and how good a player you are. If you're a decent player with your timing together then definition and 16th notes aren't a problem. It is incredibly rare for me to come across a bass solo I enjoy, but when I do, I understand that the reason I'm enjoying it is because I respect what the bass player in question is playing from a musical point of view. Most other people who aren't musicians just don't want to see it or don't understand it.
 6.
<enter stock photo of the Osmonds/Jackson 5/Kings of Leon here>
Would it surprise you to learn that you're not the first person to make this comparison It's not nearly as weird as that. We all fight, but equally we all work towards the same goals. We're not really brothers in that sense either, just very good friends. It's also worth noting that whilst we were brought up listening to a lot of different music, we don't come from an inherently 'musical' family, and none of our parents played instruments to any great standard. I am of the belief that had our parents applied themselves to learning a musical instrument then they probably would have been very good musicians themselves.
 7. I should probably add at this stage that my older sister is a great guitarist and bass player, the the rest of my band are four brothers... and they're my cousins as well. Without blowing my (our??) own trumpet, we can all play, so I think there is something to be said for creativity to be found in families.
 8. I believe you can be born with a more creative mind, but I think (as has already been mentioned) it is more likely that creativity is the result of being born into a creative environment. Musical talent is mostly about how we choose to use our ears though, so in this sense it must be a conscious choice in our infancy to elect to use our inherent ability to judge pitch and rhythm, and then to further apply it to our chosen instrument or voice.
 9.
New one this afternoon. Not perfect IMO, but I don't want to place the emphasis on technicality.
Always liked your playing Huw, you've got a really great feel for your instrument.
 10. Resist... resist!!!
 11.
He is a handsome bastard. When he came round to mine I was in two minds whether or not to kidnapp him and keep him as my kept boy.
Oh Steve, you old charmer you!
 12.
Yes, it's the anonymous negging of Pete's post that is anti-social and objectionable.
Which definitely serves to highlight my main qualm about the reputation system; if you object to a post or poster, surely it's better to confront the issues raised with reasoned debate rather than click the red 'down' button. It's really silly, if this is meant to be a forum, don't offer the ones who don't want to participate properly by giving them the ability to damn a post with one click.
 13. Me at a recent gig in Sweden: And me with my wonderful girlfriend, who keeps me sane and happy!
 14.
But what other basses on that mark would you recommend?
You need to be the one to choose at the end of it all. You've stumbled onto a bass forum full of bass players, but we're all bass players of vastly differing opinions so what might be right for you might not be the same as the next person. I think the best thing you could possibly do is get down to the Bass Gallery in Camden,or one of the Guitarguitar stores and spend some time finding out what you like. Sites like this are good for clarification but they're not the be all and end all as we all have differing opinions on what's good and what isn't
 15.
let your ears decide not some idiots like us on basschat.. you're playing it not us
Absolutely!
 16. Jake is a top lad to deal with, I would recommend him to anyone. Best of luck with the sale lad
 17.
Hey, bass brothers. I'm gonna buy a new bass, and I came to my ultimate decision (kind of). It's Warwick Corvette Standard vs Road Worn P vs Road Worn J. I'm new to the forum, so I would just like to know your opinion, and what other bass guitars you would recommend.
Welcome to the forum. I've owned all of the basses you've mentioned (kind of). You're comparing three distinctly different basses, all with their own characteristics and feel. The Warwick: Lovely sounding instrument, there is something incredibly unique about Warwick and their Ovangkol necks. Lovely, grindy, growly midrange thing that they have. I wouldn't own one again though, because I'm not mad on the neck shape and Warwick isn't my thing anymore. Personal preference though. Roadworn Jazz: Great instrument, can't help feeling like the quality control could be a lot better though for the asking price. They look the part, and you know where you stand with a good Jazz Bass. Sounded good! Roadworn P: Sounded great, but then I am a bit of a sucker for P's. Fat, warm, punchy. My choice would probably be this out of all three, but that's just me. The worn in finish is nice too, not convincing up close but no one's going to get that close at a gig anyway! My advice would be to go try them all out and figure out which one is best for you. Good luck with it.
 18. Best bass player ever! Well, definitely my favourite anyway. He really is just incredible.
 19.
Adele has a totally stunning voice. I really like her tracks but totally over played which will ruin it....along with X Factor contestants thinking they have a voice like her.
I really like Adele, but she's not been very sensible with her voice of late. Hopefully she'll be on the mend after taking some time out.
 20. I've only scan-read a lot of what's been said so I apologise if I repeat any of the points already made. I voted for the removal of the system, purely because I think that whilst some people's opinion's will conflict with others, neither is less valid if argued with due care and attention to the validity of one's argument and reasoned thinking. If a situation arose whereby a troll-like comment was made (for example), I would prefer to see the said post ousted by one or more of our intelligent regular posters (of which there are many) or for the mods to take action against the poster in question. The system as I see it at the moment probably serves to bolster more popular opinions, but in the context of reasoned argument an opinion no more valid than that from the opposing side, if that makes sense at all.
 21. I'm a lefty but I play right handed, fortunately! (There's a lot more choice bass wise).
 22.
While I can definitely see the positive sides it does steer the forum to one that favors less discourse and more tribalism overall. The only people who I think will worry about making posts are the ones with reason, those without will still post as they feel. To me it's a tool for the lowest common denominator to exert their influence without having to be able to illustrate their opinions. I feel if you have a disagreement you should be able to state your case and stand by it and not just simply click a button that will have the same value as a reasoned argument. I think it will soon be a popularity contest with certain groups always liking posts in their group to show how much better they are regardless of the content.
I'm inclined to agree, I think one of the big reasons I enjoy this site so much is that discourse can take place on contentious issues and most can hold back from loosing it completely with the opposing side. This ain't Talkbass, I've seen a big amount of clique-like behaviour and a tendency to rubbish anything that isn't flavour of the month anymore (from some), and I just don't think that happens as much over here, we seem to be very self-contained and reasoned people.
 23.
I found last week that the fingers gave so much more bottom end - can that ever be emulated with a pick?
Using a harder pick and EQing in the right amount of low end should work. Flimsier picks can have the effect of zapping your low end I find. Generally if I need low end though I'll use my fingers. I'll reach for a pick if I want a bit more of a driving mid-rangey sound or I want to do the Carol Kaye impression
 24.
Normally NO. I used to go to the Manchester one when i played guitar and it is great for "skinny stringed" players. Very little bass gear as a rule and certainly no bass specific exhibitors. I know Pete, who organises the shows and mentioned the lack of bass presence, but it gets pretty well attended without changes. Here's the full script. http://www.guitarsho...pool%202011.htm
Ahh okay. Just curious really as I'm a guitarist as well and if it did have a decent array of exhibitors I might just be tempted to go and have a look. Nothing that tickles my fancy though.
 25.
You raise a valid point here. However having been to the states I know slap style is very popular over there and in the UK the fingerstyle is more prominent
True, and it depends on what kind of music you perform of course. Also there are no rules to anything. Anthony Jackson plays with a pick all over music that you wouldn't expect the bass player to be using a pick on, and I'm sure there are plenty of vice versa scenarios too. Having plenty of strings to your bow is never a bad thing.
