1. Is 14.25'' actually shallow? That still leaves almost 10" empty space behind the tuner - I don't know if that would be a problem or not.
2. Would I be better off with something like Gator 2U Shallow Rack Case # Units (rack): 2U # Depth: 14.25''(Rackable depth) # Interior Front Rail to Rear Rail Distance: 12" # Interior Front Rail To Rear Lid: 14.25" # Interior Lid Depth: 2.25" # External Dimensions: 22" x 16.75" x 7" # Material: Polyethylene # Colour: Black # Weight: 4.5kg / 9.92 lbs Since I don't plan to be putting any kind of amp heads in there - I just want a tuner and compressor/limiter/gate package in a sturdy, portable rack.
3. Cheers for all the info and comments chaps - I think I'm beginning to get a good idea of what I'm after.
I use 400mm and 500mm for amps however this is too deep for tuners and compressors, etc which tend to be quite shallow. I have seen Effects cases that are 300mm deep and less.
When you say "too deep", do you mean it's a problem putting them in if they're too shallow for the case? I'm currently looking at Gator GR-2L - 2U rack case with front and rear rack mounts, heavy-duty butterfly latches, lightweight polyethylene construction. Dimensions: 165 x 558 x 569mm (19"/2U). Internal depth: 477mm. Weight: 4.6kg & Korg DTR-1000 BL chromatic tuner - automatically detects the note name and accurate pitch, seven semi-tone flat tuning support, two types of display: cents or strobe and adjustable calibration of 438-455Hz. Dimensions: 1.81 x 18.94 x 4.45 inches (HxWxD). Weight: 3.09lbs. Compressor-wise, I don't have a clue since it would be a while before I bought one. But maybe the Alesis 3630, which is apparently 19"x1.7"x4.5".
4.
The units will have their size on the spec in Us so most compressors* and tuners will be 1U and you'll need a 2U case to put them in.
Just to clarify, and this will sound stupid, but if a tuner/compressor is 1U then you suggest a 2U case because I'm getting two units. Not because a 1U device requires a 2U case? So is the U value the height of the thing? Then the depth varies so best I can do is look at some possible purchases and give myself a bit of room on the depth of the case I choose?
5. I've kinda decided I want to go down to the rack route in replacing my "tuner" - which deserves the quotation marks due to being crap. But I don't understand all this rack stuff - if I wanted to get something like a Gator hard plastic portable rack thing with enough space for the tuner and a compressor/limiter/gate device (which I'd like to get to later), how do I go about actually getting the right size? I'm assuming 2U, 3U etc. refers to the number of device units that can go in there??? But then they seem to be different heights and depths etc. and I'm just lost. Any help much appreciated at this point.

TAB

Yes. I do the same - and I don't even like tab that much. The worst thing is most of my bass sheet music books have the tab underneath. It's just like putting the TV on at a party, you can't help but look at it. One day I'll go through and black marker the whole thing out.
7. Hahaha I don't think I have much of a voice but the big problem there would be I just can not open my mouth and play at the same time. I am starting to work on that but it could be a while before I can even manage a few backing vocals.
8.
would it be an idea to all play along to a CD, do that a couple of times and then play all play without it . I remember doing that with a few bands
That could be cool to get rolling with - nice suggestion. Thank you. I'll pass that on as well and make sure I have some tech available for the job.
9.
Are you sure that none of you can sing,or are at least willing to give it a try?
Not sure - I'm due to ask the question asap. But I'm trying to prepare for everything here - it's all a little scary when you've never done it before and are unsure of even your own abilities.
10.
Apologies if this is jumping the gun a bit but you didn't say what sort of line-up it will be.
We don't know at this point - it's a pretty casual affair mainly just to get all of us over the hump of never having played with people. So far there's just a guitarist, a drummer and moi. But your melody suggestion did give me an idea. If I vary my fills/turnarounds/patterns etc. depending on their location in the tune then it might help me remember (for example) which verse I'm in.
11. Another lefty here, happily playing right handed. I played a little guitar as a kid (right handed) so years later when I picked up a bass, it didn't even occur to me to consider a left handed one.
12. Ah maybe you're right. I can play 'you can't hurry love' with just a metronome but it's taken a long time to get to know the track that well.
13. I might have finally found some people to play music with, but one small thing that concerns me is that I don't know if anyone is going to be singing. We're just intending to play simple things to start with but I was wondering if anyone had any good tips on how to follow where you are in a track without any vocals? Is it just a case of counting bars all the way through? Cheers.
14. Cheers 5, it arrived here safely yesterday. Start the clock... :-)
15.
I was just watching a Marina and the Diamonds video, first comment "nice juggs" Genius
Is that the same video where someone has pointed out "she fwas born is wales but she comes from UK" (Typos as written)
16.
I heard that.
God damn that was fast!!! Your ears must have been burning.
17. I started thinking about getting a 70s Fender-P... don't know why, and don't tell Bass-Doc that I said that... But anyway, BassChat has cured me of this desire. The more I read, the more it seems impossible for a fool like me to buy a half decent one. Too many variables.

DGCF

If you went to standard C tuning instead, I'd say trying the fat four strings from a five string pack is worth a try. E.g. C=.130 But I'd be a bit uneasy about tightening that to a D. I've had my Vampyre tuned in C-F-Bb-Eb (w/ Warwick Red Labels) since not long after I bought it and I'm very happy. Edit: Just reread the original post. Seems C isn't an option really... I'm sure there was a string tension calculator thing on a website somewhere which could help here though.
19. Has this gone on to Andy or Juanny? Not sure if they're AWOL and whether you want my details?
20. They need to give Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot) a signature bass. He's been endorsed for years, has a mugshot in their adverts (pronged beardy guy in an ad in BGM this month) and actually plays their instruments on stage.

Bass Woes

Buy something new. Solves the problem and generates that warm fuzzy feeling. Getting repairs just solves the problem - no fuzzy.
22. I'm going to fly in the face of this thread and say "shame on you!".
23. The Temptations - Get Ready Another Jamerson classic that induces dancing around the house with your bass.
24. Transcribe! is a very useful tool for this sort of thing also - http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/overview.html - easy to use and not expensive (although not free). However, with regard to pre-amp i.e. running the bass through the computer. That can be a whole world of pain... For practice, I actually do the opposite. i.e. Take the PC output into a little Behringer mixer and out to some studio monitors/headphones. Have been known to run the bass through there too - either direct, via a pedal, or taking the amp's out.
25. What exactly are the features you're after? I don't have a Bass Trainer so am not quite sure what they do beyond the basic idea of letting you play along to an mp3 and slowing it down. I suspect there's at least a combination of bits of software I can recommend do accomplish the same end goal.
