  1. Ok, so I couldn't wait and after dinner decides to fit my new pickguard. Looks awesome but as you can imagine verynwasily smudged but also scratches pretty easily too... Have to see how that works out in the long run.

I also fitted the @KiOgon circuit/loom, the difference it makes is significant, I'd suggest fitting one of these before investing in pickups. Note KiOgon pot shafts measured 9.5mm, so I slightly larger than the HB original pots which meant I had to drill the holes out a little with a 10mm drill bit. Was a bit rough because I think you need a really high speed with this material to avoid taking chunks out, but it worked out fine. Thanks to KiOgon, apologies it took me 6 months to actually fit your nice 0.1uf kit ☺️.

Just for info measured my standard HB pickups at 7.3k Ohms, significantly lower than compared to the toneriders which are 10.6k

Also treated it too a quick fret polish and some lemon oil and a string change.

Next job is Fender high mass bridge... I'm going for the Phil Lynott look if you hadn't already guessed. ☺️

    Yikes!!!!

Ive been thinking of doing an A/B like this with a. High mass bridge, but also taking the waveforms and doing an fft to look if the frequency content has changed, i.e if there are more harmonics or more fundamental present.

So I had a quick play around with this idea tonight. I have been able to capture and perform a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on a open A note which has a frequency of 55Hz. As you can imagine there are harmonics included, notably the second and third harmonics at 110Hz and 165Hz respectively. This was captured using my HB PB-20 with standard bridge.. Please see attached image files below.

I plan to do this for all strings at several intervals above and below the 12th fret and see if there is any change in the length of the note and the frequency contents. I will create a new thread for this somewhere more relevant in due course.

They're certainly loud. Scary loud tbh.

When I A/B'd them against Duncan QP's , the mixer showed a huge jump in output.

BTW. That's same bass, same strings, same pickup heights and same recording settings.

  4. I understand that neodymium magnets give that modern 'hifi' like tones and Alnico V more classic tones. However when all said and done most of it is in the fingers.... I know this because my instruments always sound heaps better in someone else's hands 🤣

I tried Entwistles once. Very good, huge powerful sound but unfortunately nothing like a classic P bass sound we all know and love. Totally up to you.

Sounds like the Entwhistle pickups are indeed a more modern flavour.

    Big difference.

    Big improvement.

wasn’t bad to start with but fantastic now.

Cool, going to replace mine soon. I was wondering how hot the originals are? Did you by any chance measure their resistance when you removed them?

My PB20 turned up today. To be honest I wasn't expecting much but it's completely blown me away. I love the matt black paint just but everything about it - the weight, the paint job and even the sound is good - but when you consider the price it really is great. The hardware (tuners and bridge aren't the best) is adequate and is the only slight downside to this absolute bargain of a bass.

I actually won this on eBay the other day so I'll be hot-rodding this with the following:

Seymour Duncan SPB3 Quarter Pound Pickup (£60)
    New red pearl scratchplate (£11)
    Wilkinson tuners (£30
    Gotoh bridge (£30)

So effectively I'll be getting an above average awesome sounding P-bass for under £200

I plan to change the pick ups, a bad donkey bridge and change the tuners too... The originals weighed in at 83g each.. which isn't horrendous but is on the heavy side.

    Good news folks.

About half hour after my last reply Brian got in touch. PB-20 plate was handed over at 13.30 this afternoon.

Brilliant, Big thanks to you! I will be placing my order with Brian in the next day or so 🤞 Glad Brian is fine.

No word so far this morning.

Not an encouraging sign when you know the fella does 12 to 14 hour shifts 7 days a week.

Sounds like he deserve a good few days rest. 🙏 Hopefully he's not feel to rough with the vaccine.

  10. Hi Kodiakblair,

Thanks for the update, I hope Brian isn't too affected by his Covid jab. 🤞Mother in law had hers a few weeks back and felt a bit rough for a couple of days afterwards, but then was fine. Good to  know the pickguards are the same for both colours 🙏

I got the body from Bagsieblue off here, it`s got a Maida Vale Lockdown pickup that I got off ebay, supposedly hand wound and I have to admit that it does sound really good, the bridge is just a generic hi mass affair and the neck I already had lying around, I`ve always liked black and gold together since the Lotus F1 days so just stuck it all together. I`ve got the HB MB4 SBK as well.

Nice work! Never heard of those pickups will check them out. Do you think the high mass bridge makes a difference, my stock bass sustains for agggeeesss... Much more than my Yamaha TRBX304 which has a bridge like you have here, but is a Mahogany body.

Gonna go and checkout those maida val pups. 👌

  12. Very nice! Thanks for sharing... Tell us about the mods.. looks like different bridge and obviously a different neck.

I stuck a single ply matt black plate on my bitsa SBK it was just a copy from China fits ok but holes don`t line up but I wasn`t bothered about that.

Ha! Three of mine are in that picture (5 string Stingray style MB-5 SBK)

Great stuff about the PB-20, I want a black one (my girlfriend's bass) and it looks like I will not have to send the original anymore :)

Three of your's! Then you know what to do 😉. Yes that the great advantage not having to send in you scratch plate in advance. He has a friend sending him one for a PB-20 this week coming and he will give me a shout as soon as he has it in.  He's not far from you he's just across the way in Glasgow.

That's the setup I'm going for too.

It always baffled me why Fender didn't come out with a Precision in this colour scheme. It's my ideal colour scheme for a P-bass.

Agreed regarding the colour scheme, although maybe the nitro finished Highway one series probably comes close with a few years of playing to create a nice pattina.
