1.
I honestly didn't hear a single note he played all night.
Wot, no My Generation?
2. most bass tones floor me, if I can hear them above the drums. http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/250059-bass-mix-in-live-concerts-disappointing/page__fromsearch__1
3.
As others mentioned before, went to see PG in Sheffield last night. It's definitely the kick drum/low floor toms that are ruining it for bass. During a song with little drums for a lot of it you can hear Tony Levin, even on fretless. As soon as the full drum kit comes in he's completely drowned out. Chapman stick? he might just as well been up there playing my ironing board with rubber bands attached. Swings and roundabouts though - crappy bass sound but otherwise the mix was fine and you wouldn't fit that superb light show into a small venue.
Yep, the drums are king as far as sound engineers are concerned, bastards.
4.
It probably is. But everyone knows it's Rod Stewart's song. Even the Stereophonics said it was a cover of Rod Stewart's!
I know I'm being an insufferable smart arse, but I didn't, maybe it was mentioned in this thread, if it wasn't it should have been http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247193-hits-with-cover-versions/page__hl__cover%20versions
5. did a gig last night at a small venue supporting Vice Squad and sound wasn't good, muddy, indistinct vocals and something was booming, my partner reckoned it was my bass but but on parts of songs where I played on my own it was on the trebley side, at least 2 people went up to the sound man to tell him but it didn't seem to make any difference and Vice Squads bass sound was a muddy mushy mess (stingray with a pick)
6.
You don't - you let the bass do it. See previous thread re muddy bass sound in live mix. You use the bass drum for standing the cymbals, toms, drink, everything else on, that's all.
I can't argue with that, bass drums just invade my frequency space
7. this subjects been done a few times now, here's one http://basschat.co.uk/topic/182561-superb-cover-versions/page__hl__cover+versions__fromsearch__1
8. IMO a lot of it has to do with the modern fashion of having a loud clicky bass drum, so to give some bottom end (which is what the bass drum should be for) they use the bass which means no definition, a lot of recordings suffer from this as well.
9. not a bass but I was interested in a Yamaha APX700 electro acoustric, now being cack handed it was proving difficult to locate one in stock so I could try one, tried about 6 Yamaha stockists, no we don't stock them was always the answer but "we can order you one" (if I was going to buy one without trying it I'd use the internet) the classic one was "if you come in I'll get one of the guys to play a right handed one for you" In the end I bought one off ebay second hand which I'm very happy with
10.
I can cover staffs for collecting it back, I'm sure we can relay it back between us? Im a spiteful bastard so if it were mine I'd always rather get it back and smash it to bits before letting someone have it for half the price because of new dubious marks

Where does the buyer live?
I felt the same way Pete but I'm also a pragmatist, £60 is better than nothing, I've drawn a line under it now and moved on with a lesson learned, the buyer lived in Somerset.
11.
Has anyone actually read what the OP wrote? He's not asking you to answer here, but to PM or email him ...
Not much fun if we can't see everybody's answers is it? I always thought that was the idea of a forum
12. can't be bothered to answer all the questions, I use an electric tuner built into my zoom 506II pedal, yes I'm happy, nobody notices if a bass is a bit out of tune anyway, IMO as ever
13.
Gear going wrong after over a years use isn't exactly the fault of the retailer.
you're absolutely right of course, but just goes to show not all their stuff is top quality, just trying to put a slightly different slant onto the thomann love in.
14. bought a smoke machine from them once, came with a funny looking plug on it, had to cut it off and put a super duper UK one on, oh, and the bloody thing went up in the wrong kind of smoke after a year and a bit
15. I never watch TV ads, I record everything then skip through them, I'd like to thank everybody that does though, they help provide my programmes for nothing (apart from the Beeb ones obviously)
16. trouble with not using ebay is your potential customer market is so much smaller, so you probably don't get such a good price, I know whenever I'm looking for an item ebay is my first point of call. I've got another acoustic guitar on there at the moment,(being a lefty it's the only way I can try guitars before deciding which one is for me) I've stipulated a minimum of 25 feedback and I'll be taking extensive photo's of it before it goes off. Not being able to give negative feedback to a buyer is a mystery to me
17. arpmo, (acronyms really piss me off)
18. we use a Yamaha EMX 512SC mixer amp a couple of Whafedale titans and a cheapo monitor, plenty good enough for your average pub gig, usually just lead vocal and two backing vocals, occasionally we'll mic up the snare, bass drum and guitar, but not very often
19.
That's actually a great idea. There's more chance of them doing something original and constructive within a band situation. Most keyboard players want to dominate every damn song and as far as they're concerned, the band are there to support them, much like a concert painist. Wronggg!!!! And the worst thing is, they insist on encroaching on the bass player's frequency territory with their busy, crappy and ill-considered left-hand work!! Then they swan about the place like divas, act up, whinge and moan and generally make me want to punch them! Grr!
So perhaps the ad should read 'keyboard player with only a right hand need apply' never fancied being in a band with a keyboard player, less so after reading this thread
20. sometimes people don't pull their weight because they're incapable of showing any initiative, asking them politely to do something specific usually works, as in the case of our singer helping with the setting up of the PA, your keyboard player sounds like he's beyond that, you're right to dump him, the rest might fall into line than, with a bit of guidance.
21.
I still don't get why originals bands don't expect to be paid. We started asking for expenses as a minimum from our 5th gig onwards, and these days we come away with at least enough to cover the day-to-day running costs of the band (rehearsal space etc.) as well as being fed and watered, and any left over goes into the recording and promotional fund. IME there is money available from venues and promoters for originals bands. However most never ask so they simply don't get.
Well I did say when starting out, obviously if you can build up a following it makes a difference. But I agree with your asking comment, most originals bands are happy enough to get a decent support slot to a 'known' band
22. probably the main difference here is between covers bands doing 2 hour sets, supplying the PA, which I would expect to get paid for and an originals band probably doing 30 - 45 minutes as part of a multi band bill, PA supplied, which more than likely you're lucky to get petrol money for. I would imagine that even truly professional musicians that rely on playing for a living would be playing in some sort of functions band then maybe be in an originals band as well but wouldn't expect to make money at it, not when starting out anyway
23. met our drummer and guitarist through Party Sounds 10 years ago and we're still together, just!
24. not really my cup of tea, for the same reason rap isn't, I quite like a melody line in songs
25. well I would be looking for songs with just A D E in them so I wouldn't be worrying were to fret, or I'd have to put chalk marks on the neck
