I still don't get why originals bands don't expect to be paid. We started asking for expenses as a minimum from our 5th gig onwards, and these days we come away with at least enough to cover the day-to-day running costs of the band (rehearsal space etc.) as well as being fed and watered, and any left over goes into the recording and promotional fund. IME there is money available from venues and promoters for originals bands. However most never ask so they simply don't get.
Well I did say when starting out, obviously if you can build up a following it makes a difference. But I agree with your asking comment, most originals bands are happy enough to get a decent support slot to a 'known' band
-
probably the main difference here is between covers bands doing 2 hour sets, supplying the PA, which I would expect to get paid for and an originals band probably doing 30 - 45 minutes as part of a multi band bill, PA supplied, which more than likely you're lucky to get petrol money for. I would imagine that even truly professional musicians that rely on playing for a living would be playing in some sort of functions band then maybe be in an originals band as well but wouldn't expect to make money at it, not when starting out anyway

met our drummer and guitarist through Party Sounds 10 years ago and we're still together, just!

Sleaford Mods - putting the bass back into basic!
PaulWarning replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
not really my cup of tea, for the same reason rap isn't, I quite like a melody line in songs -
well I would be looking for songs with just A D E in them so I wouldn't be worrying were to fret, or I'd have to put chalk marks on the neck
I like a bit of slap bass if it fits in the song. Brothers Johnson-Stomp, for example.
trouble is I've never found a song with slap bass in it that I like, so, do I not like songs that slap bass fits with, or does slap bass put me off the song?
Search for 'battery powered amps' on here and there's quite a few options - this one looks good in particular as you could amplify a whole band and it comes with a built in trolley as well as costing peanuts: http://www.amazon.co...ords=qtx+qr10pa
150watt from a battery, that can't be right, can it? BTW I use a Roland mobile cube for busking, acoustic guitar and vocals, I have tried bass through it and it does sound better than you'd expect considering it's only got 2 x 4" speakers but I wouldn't think it could compete volume wise with anything other than an unamplified acoustic guitar, although I did get told to turn down once by a community copper, one of the shops nearby had complained I was too loud

when the bass kicks in it gets me every time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfmZcD9IRgQ
Interesting concept. I hate Coronation Street, but I can't say I've never gone out of my way to watch another episode just to remind myself how much I despise it. Perhaps I should?
perhaps despise was putting it a bit strongly, dislike might be nearer the mark (King )I used to quite enjoy Coro, well the comedy bits anyway, but stopped watching it when the then Mrs Warning decided she'd had enough of me, can't say I've missed it (or her)
-
Given that the programme was specifically about slapping, did you seriously expect to enjoy it?
not really, but it remind me how much I despise it.
-
well I've just listened to it, God it's dreadful, 2 highspots, the quote from basschat about what should be slapped and about 10seconds of the Ramones, which probably explains why I thought the rest of it was dreadful, each to their own eh?
-
Yay! Basschat just got a mention!!
Oh right I'll maybe check it out on the iplayer then

Mark King? don't think I'll bother just my onion of course but he's my least favourite bass player
The global shipping programme is fairly easy to opt out of.
so I understand, is this something others would recommend?
-
I've just been enrolled onto ebay's Global Shipping Programme, am I being paranoid or does this increase the chances of being scammed?

He offered to send it back but I decided to lessen the hassle ( he could have damaged it even more out of spite before sending it back) and I offered him £40 back which he has now excepted, I've sold quite a bit of stuff on ebay with no problems, but the low feedback caused me concern, with good reason as it turned out, having said that he seemed a genuine guy in the email conversations I had with him, but you can never tell can you?
-
the guy's just sent me pictures of marks on the neck, that weren't there when I sent it, can't tell whether it's split or not, anyway I've asked him to send it back and I'll give him a full refund
Sorry to be the bearer but you will be lucky if it goes in your favour. I sold an item and sent it recorded delivery. It was signed for at the address but the buyer said they hadn't received it. I got copies of the signature and all details possible from the courier. Ebay said I could not prove that the buyer actually received it and refunded their money from my paypal account. The courier insurance would not pay out as they had proof of delivery. It seems ebay now relies on the honesty of the buyer and if they choose to scam you they can. I do not now sell on ebay and if I did it would be cash on collection only...
I'm beginning to see why there's so many cash on collection items on ebay these days, at least he's admitted receiving it, no pictures of the damage yet though.
-
If he has signed for it in good condition he may have a problem. However if he takes up with ebay they will generally favour the buyer. Sorry but from experience, mine and many others, you are likely to lose out on this. Did he pay by paypal. If not the he can't get an automatic refund.
Yes, he paid on Paypal, from his email the insinuation was that I hadn't described it properly which I know I did, do paypal just refund him the money without returning the goods, surely not, that would be a scammers charter
-
Did you photograph it as it was being packaged and was it insured? Without him sending you pictures I'd do nowt. If you do decide on a refund, he should pay the postage.
No, I didn't photograph it being packed, sent it by parcelforce 48, do they insure you up to £50 for musical instruments?
-
just sold an acoustic guitar on ebay for £100 plus £15 postage, just had an email from the guy who reckons the neck is split (whether he's saying it's happened in transit or it's always been there I don't know, I certainly never noticed a split in the neck) and he's had a quote of £75 to repair it, I've just asked him for pictures. He's only got feedback of 3 over several years, anybody else been in this situation? If I ask him to send it back for a refund who pays the postage?
-
generally the stuff I like is rocky stuff with a good melody line, which is why I can't stand any form of rap, it's just chanting to a drum beat with no melody line to it, I know some of the poetry is clever, but I'm not a fan of poetry either
*Like* I've never really understood the hate for U2 or Bono, or any band really. U2 are fairly limited musically but good at what they do. They turn out a couple of good songs every album and over the years that's a fair no of good songs and gives a lot of people pleasure. Very few bands really change their style much over the years so why do they get criticism more than others? Preaching? Well which of us doesn't know how to put the world to rights and is reluctant to express an opinion? At least the guy cares and is prepared to put his fame on the line. I'm sure I'd sound a bit of a dick if everything I said was recorded, played back and picked over. As for Jools interviews, well they are always like that, aren't they? What were they going to say? "It's a piece of p**s, we can go on churning out this stuff forever".
got to agree with everything you say there, there's way to much dislike for bands because they are successful, lets face it it's just jealousy, which one of us wouldn't love to be in their position? you might not like their music but as I said earlier it wouldn't do for us all to like the same thing, I can respect someone's music without actually liking it, it's difficult sometimes though, f**cking hate rap
-
thanks to this thread I've just watched it on the i player, not a big U2 fan but compared to some of the dross around they sounded pretty good to me, thought the Slaves were like a breath of fresh air, but as ever it depends on your own tastes, wouldn't do for us all to like the same thing would it?

Interesting frequency bands for bass parametric EQ
PaulWarning replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Effects
I always think a boost of around 400hz give a well defined bass sound without getting boomy,
