1. I bought my SWR SM400S from Tommy Shannon of Double Trouble a little while back. Had to mod it to work on 230V as it was hardwired to American 110V. He was good enough to sign it for me as well.
2.
I'm awaiting the arrival of a Series 2000 Status at the minute so this thread is probably relevant to me. I've no feeling either way on what a headless looks like. It's all about practicalities for me. Small enough to a) fit in a standard guitar case/bag fit in the boot of my Skoda Fabia along with my rig c) allow my to turn around on the stage at one of our regular(-ish) gig venues without removing the head of my bass on a pillar/wall/guitarist. Also, being all graphite, it'll handle variations in temperature better than my other basses. Really a win-win siutuation for a covers band bassist. I am slightly concerned that it'll sound a little too 'ACTIVE', but I can live with that for a gigging bass. At worst I'll figure some way of replacing the pickups electronics with passive alternatives (I can hear cries of "BURN THE HERETIC!" from the Status lovers already!).
Why not ask Rob to fit passive?
3.
Wot! This one? Quite correct Mr Assin. It went through eBay twice in February without a bite and I picked it up on it's third pass. So...they are still out there, keep looking
OOOOOOOHHHHHHH! - I want to try one of those. That is right up my street, and Ibanez as well, a flavour of my youth. How does it play / sound similar to anything else?
4. I also was not a fan particularly until my back started playing up. I got a hohner from a fellow Bchatter and now have moved up to a Status Streamline, I am now a convert. I still play my Stingrays but just at home sat down. It now feels a hell of a stretch to reach the tuners though! The great thing these days is there is a reasonable choice of headed and headless instruments at a variety of price points with decent quality. When I started playing in the 70's this was not the case. Players of all levels and ages are the better off for this. It would be a mighty depressing and GAS free environment without the choices now on offer.
5. Company car - about the same as the basses Company plane - definitely cost more, but worth more? - I have to think about that. No - actually, the basses are definitely more worth it - cheaper to run as well.

Excellent ! I could think of 100s of reasons some serious and some just plain hillarious whay that will and should never happen!
We already make the best basses in the world in England - Status! And I too knoweth the pink shop of which you speak - I used to live in Lincoln for 10 years before moving base to Malta/Tripoli
7. Toyota Camry, mind you I think my Status Streamline would fit in the Smart Roadster. For longer journeys the 737 or Airbus A320 are my prefered rides.
8. For the gig tmrw I will be using the Rolan Microcube (runs on 9v so is isolated, plus my wireless system. No vocals for me until we establish exactly the source of the problem.
9.
I just noticed your sig - did this happen in the UK or "home" in Tripoli?
Home - Tripoli Libya
10. Thanks everybody for the kind thoughts. I suspect the circumstances which caused my MarkBass combo to die are the same ones as almost led me to follow suit. without pre-empting the results of todays investigations, the most likely scenario is that either PA socket or my socket or one of the associated leads has had some crossover between earth and live thus rendering all "earthed" items to be at 230V on the equipment concerned. When one of these items came in contact with a "real" earth the current flowed. Unfortunately I was inbetween the fault and the real Earth. That is as simple an explanation as I can come up with. Familiarity breeds contempt they say. We have been based at this rehearsal location for 2 years and sometimes play gigs there as well. So of course one feels confident that all is well as we have never had any problems up until now. Clearly something changed before last wednesday (when the amp blew up) When I found out exactly the details I will let you all know. BTW to be sure of isolating your band succesfully, use an RCD at each wall socket including any ones for PA, Lights etc. Use wireless Mic's and wireless systems for the instruments - these are really effective and isolate you very well.
11.
RCD's will only work if there is a functioning earth.
That is not necessarily true - they are called Residual Current Devices because they measure the difference between Live and Neutral - if there is something missing then they trip. this (I believe) is a true RCD there may be other ELD Earth Leakage detectors which measure the Earth current - these do not protect you from a missing earth. RCD's will work with just live and neutral (as you may have on your power drill or lawn mower. If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me.
12. Thought I had better share this. I know there have been previous threads but when it comes to this sort of thing there is no problem repeating the advice. In mid song last night (first track of the rehearsal) I went to move the mic' on it's stand in front of my amp as I was not happy with the tone. I experienced a serious electric shock which caused me to spin round holding the mic' stand and fall over onto it. At this point I stop remembering anything until I came round surrounded by freaked out band members calling for an ambulance. They tell me they first thought I was having some sort of fit until they touched me and also received a shock. They then "pulled the plug" on the stage power. I was probably live for around 10 seconds max (to them it seemed longer). Any longer than this and I suspect I would not be telling you about this. I reportedly stopped breathing for a few seconds after the power was disconnected. I suffered multiple burns to my hands and chest (from falling on the mic' stand/mic' and still being in the circuit). We locked the rehearsal facility (which was designed and built by the lead singer), and the full investigation starts today as to where the fault comes from. I will let you know the results. NOTE - I did not have my own RCD in the circuit nor did the PA. I suspect the rehearsal facility does not have a functioning RCD. Always check you are properly protected before you start. I was seconds away from death last night - please do not repeat my experience Thanks. PS the Status Streamline survived unscathed although I did change the strings and clean off the scorch marks from the neck once I got home.
13. SWR's are famous for not being protected against Phantom Power - they will fry if attached to it.
14. all true, and would help to find the problem, but I suspect it will have to go back to a dealer or distributor because of the warranty issue. good job I have other amps. actually rehearsed using my roland microcube and mic'd it up through the PA - not perfect but perfectly giggable - was surprised.
15. I am sure if anyone opens it up it will invalidate the warranty - I would do it myself being an electronics engineer, but I can guess what they would say. However checking the speaker by attaching an extension cab seems a worthwhile test, if it is the problem, I might be able to persuade them to send a replacement speaker!
16.
Are you sure it's the amp and not your bass or cable ?
Araid so - tried three basses and three cables - it is not a happy chappetto
17. cmd 121p bought new from bass gallery in camden n July I hope it is covered under warranty. Contacted Markbass direct and they have pointed me at the UK distributer - awaiting reply to email at the moment. Main problem is going to be that I am in North Africa right now, not UK.
18. Switched it on last night and almost no volume even with everything turned up full. Only got it in July Not happy :-(
19. Ok nice, but why play it on a bass if you want the whole thing to be in the guitar range of pitch (you know what I mean) Anyway - oh wise ones, what is the bass he is playing?
20.
I was just thinking to myself, if the internet had been around in 1951, is this the discussion that would have been taking place on the Musicians Union website. Bass player versus Fender Bass player - snobbery and prejudice. But when we all take a step back, and look around, how many of us play double bass as our main instrument? Took a decade though for the revolution to really kick in, when amplifier technology caught up.
Nice comparison - our previous drummer had Roland V-Drums, he said they helped him explore his female side - I wonder what a discussion in 1951 would have made of that!
21. Please excuse me if I am being stupid here, but are the D & G strings wound the wrong way on thetuning posts?
22.
This one calls itself the biggest music shop in the centre of Munich: http://www.hieber-lindberg.de/index.php/cPath/42_53_82 They do seem to have a good selection of basses and should be easy to find (near the Stachus). This is not a personal recommendation though. They are said to be a bit on the expensive side, although they will haggle. http://www.justmusic.de/subsection/gitarre...-1-102-0-0.html comes highly recommended on the German bass lists. Good prices and good selection of basses. Its in Hanauerstrasse. Check out the Elektronik Konrad electronics warehouse if you like electronic goodies. It's huge and just round the corner. Have a Radlermass for me! I can recommend the roast ox. Stephen
Many thanks for this
23. I am off to Munich next week for the Beer Festival and need to get some small spares for a les paul studio (pots, switches) Yes I know it is the guitar not the bass, but you guys know everything about everything everywhere so someone must be able to help! Of course if anyone knows of a specialist bass shop in Munich that would be very useful to know as well, would not want to miss an opportunity whilst there.
24. Mine is a real dream to play and live with. Stability is its middle name. And compactness is a bit of a given for a headless Status called Streamline - but the balance is absolutely spot on as well. Glad to hear you are enjoying it so much.
25.
Any reason you went for the P over the CMD121H ?
1. They had one in he shop 2. Weight (I had to carry it back to Libya + my back in general)
