1.
Not no more it don't. It's gone up to £519 now. I paid £459 for mine last month, damn glad I did. I used to gig with a MAG 300 4x10, weighed a bleeding ton-I replaced it with a Trace 1x15 combo, which was in comparison was considerably louder and more compact IMHO. Now I'm delighted to say that with my current rig I can carry the amp over my shoulder in a laptop bag, and a speaker cab in each hand if needs be. Trouble is a shuttle and cab(s) works out a tad more expensive than your current budget will permit-I'd say it's well worth hanging on and saving up enough to do the job properly.
So if you've gone from a MAG300 to a GB Shuttle, do you find that the GB can stand up next to the Ashdown? I mean, i don't need to to knock ornaments off mantlepieces in the houses across the street, but it does need to be able to compete with a 100w Marshall combo, drums and keys. If it can do all that then i've GOT to get one
2. Sounds like my portability problems are going to get worse instead of better! I'd only really consider a smaller combo or a head with a 115 or 212, anything less is a bit like overkill at the mo as i really don't need THAT much power. Also, finding a decent recording studio in Manc with decent backline is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack! But thanks for your help nevertheless!
3. Anybody tried the Eden Nemesis combos? i'm thinking specifically about the N15 combo. Are they any good? i've got my heart set on a Shuttle but not sure if i can manage the outlay, assuming i only get a couple of hundred for my MAG
4. So roughly how powerful is my MAG on its own? If i can get away with a 180w combo then i'm going for the shuttle baby!
5. The thing is, i'm a bit wet behind the ears with some of this stuff. I got the MAG C115-300 because it said it can pump out 307w, which i thought would be more than enough for anything i might care to try. Now i'm under the impression that it can only do the full 307w if you hook up an extension cab, if you run it alone it can only do half that. So my 307w amp is really 150w or thereabouts. Right or wrong? If this is the case, then i can definitely look at something a bit smaller, as it has plenty of volume to compete with drums, guitar and keys without maxing the input out. I'm really liking the teeny-ness of the Shuttles now!
6. That doesn't come with the cab though does it? or am i looking in the wrong place?
7. I don't mind the ABMs, the 2x10 i played on was great - there seems to be a little more quality all round there - but i expect it's probably going to be the same weight as my MAG. It might be cheaper to go down the gym and pump some iron
8. Just looking for some advice from fellow BCers! My current amp is an Ashdown MAG C115-300, and while i'm fairly happy with the sound, i'm heartily sick of lugging it up and down stairs in the rehearsal studio and generally round the place. It's a pain in the arse! I'm looking to upgrade it at some point, but i'm not sure to what. I've played through plenty of different amps at gigs around Manchester, and to be honest, the more this happens, the less i like the MAG. I played a gig through a 210 Fender and the punch it threw out knocked my Ashdown into the weeds. I also played through a Hartke and wasn't too impressed. I'm looking for better sound and portability first and foremost. I looked at the Genz Benz Shuttle but it's just a tad outside my price range - it'd be ideal though, transport wise. I started to think about getting a Little Giant, but to be honest i've always been a combo sort of guy so i don't know where to begin. Anyone out there care to give me some advice?!
9. The 60s and 70s classic models are re-issues of two of Fender's most recognisable Jazz basses (the '62 and the '75), but at an affordable MIM price (the CIJ models are pushing a grand now with the strength of the Yen). I've never played either of the classic models, but you can see some differences in aesthetics, specifically the inclusion of the bound fingerboard and block inlays on the 70s model. The CIJ '62 re-issue also had the ground wire running from the bridge pickup to the bridge, but i can't see it on the 60s classic. I think the pickups were spaced slightly differently between the 60s and 70s models too, and a major biggie on the 62 CIJs was truss rod access; but apart from that, there aren't any other differences that i can think of. All the basses have an alder body so there's probably not a great deal of difference sound-wise either. The inclusion of the shielded cavities on the 2009 is a big plus though, and it's sadly lacking on the other two. Personally, i love the look of the 70s ones and if it was me, i'd buy one and just get someone to do a shielding job on it. But i'm lefty so i've settled for a Standard
10.
In fact - I'd see if I could find a 2008 70's reissue - but then that's me.
+1 to this, if they made it lefty i'd have one in a second
11. It depends really on whether you like the bass - the majority of the "upgrades" are purely aesthetic - i've had a look at a new one and an old one together - i think the parchment pickguard and tinted neck, along with the 70s styled logo just give it a classier look - The shielding is also going to be a welcome addition - it just depends whether this and the promise of improved pick-ups is worth the extra 80 quid. Personally i thought the 09 model was a better bass all round. People scoff at the MIM Fenders but i'm on my 3rd (one was a Tele) and i couldn't fault them in any way. If the exchange rate wasn't so bad i'd urge you to go CIJ for the extra quality but it's gone beyond stupid and there's no telling how long it might be before it comes down.
12. Also the body cavities are shielded on the newer model, it's got improved (sic) pickups, and the bridge is supposedly the same that comes with CIJ basses, but having never played a CIJ Fender, i can't corroborate this. I had one of the previous models and it was ok, i think maybe the upgrades might make it a better instrument - but you'd need to A/B them i think to see if there's a noticeable difference. AFAIK Fender have tightened their QC since the last batch of Standards were released - but i could be wrong! *ducks*
13. I'm not listening to anything right now, but the last song i listened to before i got to work was "We Could Be Kings" by Gene - if you're of the indie schimindie persuasion it is a tune of magnifcient proportions

15. i'd love this - but i just don't have the money at the moment! have a friday bump on me
16. Woo! Can i have a copy too? [email protected] Cheers. Absolutely abhorrent flouting of copyright and distribution legislation BTW - shame on you!
17. absolutely - i swear by them, probably because i'm too tight to buy straplocks  I got some from a pub a while back - and they aren't as elastic-y as the ones i've had for years. I'm sure i've got a few lying around somewhere, i'll post up a message if i have and you peeps can PM me if you want them.
18. I've got a MAG 115 combo - i can't fault it. It does everything i ask from it and it is as steady as a rock. I've heard a lot of complaints on harmony central about the 210 version, but i once played through one at a gig and it was great sounding. Ideally i'd upgrade it to some Ampeg / Mark Bass stuff but i don't have the beans! My Ashdown does me fine. Suppose it's each to their own and all that
19. What the others said - it is truly cracking. You jammy bugger! :brow:
20. i'm a cack hander, albeit with nothing to sell, but i want to join the lefty revolution!
21. Dunno about that Chris, i obviously wasn't able to play and we decided that the guitarist and keyboardist were gonna play - the show producer told the keyboardist that there was no way he was going to be allowed into the studio with his keyboard as they weren't insured... I'm not overly fussed, it's nice to be able to kick back and leave them to it. I might have to invest one day for open mics and what-have-you, but going strictly acoustic is probably a waste of time!
22. Sorry if this has cropped up at some point previously, but i wanted to ask about acoustic basses - are they worth it? I know you're going to say "just try one!" but i do have to point out that i'm a cack hander and the only basses there ever seem to be in my locale are a few Westfield P copies and the occasional Fender - so the option of trying out is not a luxury for me. It's not the first time i've whinged about being a lefty, i'm getting a bit like Uncle Albert from Only Fools... "during the war..." Anyways, the reason is, the band i'm in are being increasingly asked to do acoustic sets for local radio stations and the odd acoustic night and they want me to be involved - usually it's just guitar and vox. We were told by BBC Manchester that they aren't insured to let us use any electrical equipment so it has to be strictly acoustic and this seems to be quite common. I'm pretty certain from what i've read that it might be a waste of time once the guitar starts clanging, but i thought i'd ask you BCers for any useful input!
23. Anybody ever bought anything from Anderton's? they're supposed to have some decent prices
