and it had Mindblowing Decisions on the backside, simply beautiful music.
Now that's a tune!

Perhaps I'll give 'Strawberries' a go well, seems to be getting some serious love here! How's PG's bass tone on that one? I think part of TBA's appeal is his playing and awesome sound.

I've always quite liked the first 2 Damned albums, and having heard it again recently, the 3rd one too! For some reason, I've always avoided their post MGE records, primarily as I remember the 80s - Happy Talk, Eloise, cartoon image, etc.! Read some positive stuff about The Black Album (never knew it was a double) so with my streaming subscription, gave it a listen. It's been on heavy rotation for a few days - really like it. Ricky bass tone to die for, just a much better and different sounding band to what I expected. Quite experimental, with some great tunes along the way. Not sure if I'll dive in any further - I think the follow-up has PG on it (may check that out), but after that, it's the band I remember....and would rather forget! Should have checked this out years ago - a streaming success... ....and full proof of how a change in bass player can change the band!

Excellent call! I love the Heatwave stuff, very underrated. So many classic tracks - too many to list. I think they really had their own thing going on - funk, soul, ballads....they had it all. Some real tragedies in their story as well, very sad.....but the tunes are timeless, and the band deserves far more recognition than just being remembered for 'Boogie Nights'.

Great player, great tones. Also played on 'Return To Fantasy' with Uriah Heep (and the follow up). I'm not a UH fan TBH, but I've always had a soft spot for that album.....'Shady Lady' is a brill track, with some nice bass runs.

I love how Jazz's sound with others - I've had a few, and they always sound wrong in my hands. Plus that neck - tried to adapt, but it's just way too skinny for me. P's I love - had to part with the last one, although I didn't want to! Would like another, but not sure if I could justify it as I probably wouldn't gig it.....love the sound, but it's not my sound.

Watched it this morning - after reading much on here - didn't like one bit of it TBH! Thought the episode itself was quite poor overall. Next week - Coldplay. Now there's a band that needs more coverage......
Another example of the variation in Ricks these days - mine nailed the 'classic' tone!
I had a good few, and the tones do vary in my experience. I suppose it all depends on what you hear as a 'classic' tone as well. I picked up a new 4003 last year, and tone-wise, it's probably that most 'classic' sounding one I've had - now. Fitting a Hipshot bridge really did help, both with a slightly different tone, and improved playing position. All the Rics I've owned I've always aspired to a Squire-esque growl, and I think after x amount of years, I've finally got it, or at least my own spin on it.

I had a late 70's 4001 that sounded just like the 'classic knob' tone. The reason I sold the bass, actually!

Can I add a 'lame to fame'? Hugh Cornwell's ex-wife was at our gig last night, and I met and shook hands with her! -

I'm changing my pick size, so am letting go all my 1.0mm ones! These are Jim Dunlop Tortex picks, 1.0mm sizes. The 'classic' blue ones as you can see in the picture. I have 27 of these - all brand new and unused. Odd number as when I buy something from a music shop or strings online, I always chuck in some picks to the order. Best price I've found online is £3.00 for 10 - so all I want for the whole lot (all 27) is £5.00, which includes postage! Payment through Paypal please, marked as 'gift'. PM for more details if interested - many thanks, Iain

Another Joni fan here! I really love all her 70s stuff....less so 80's onwards, but I do appreciate she had to go somewhere else musically. 2 of my faves - 'Don Juan's....' and 'Mingus'. Never seem to rate too highly, but I think they're amazing records. I was listening to them before I even knew who Jaco was, so once I started getting into that side, it opened up a whole new aspect of her records of that period. From 'Ladies' onward, for a good while she literally didn't put a musical foot wrong.

Great work with Return To Forever as well. I'm slowly working through his solo work - +1 on 'Journey To Love' - I actually prefer it to 'School Days'.
-
+1 on getting out. Sounds like they're being a bit short-sighted with their nostagia fest.....bet they'll come crawling back, you can then have the pleasure in telling them to look elsewhere!
-
I'm not too big on them TBH (runs and hides.... ) I too am not a big fan of natural finishes.....but saying that, often these things look far better in the flesh than in pictures. Often players are deterred by the ergonomics which can give the wrong impression of these basses. It's been said before but you either love them, or hate them - both with a passion!

That's great, thanks my man!!

Got it, and going to fit it at the weekend. Couple of qustions, at the risk of sounding like a dummy....! Just wanted to clarify what each of the slots/holes adjust. You've got your left side one on each saddle, and two on the right, top and bottom. Can a helpful player explain each one before I dive in?!!
-
I've never understood the whole YOB thing myself - maybe it's because most of the 74's look better nick than me...... I did dabble with a couple of 1970's basses, and all they did was send me back clambering for a modern one! Good luck with the search....

Thinking about the age thing, Springsteen has a few years on the Rush boys, and he keeps regularly touring, recording, and giving it some by all accounts. Could be a few more Rush years yet - they show no sign of stopping! Maybe I'm wrong here, but hasn't Alex spoken out before prompting speculation, only for it to be groundless? Only remember something being mentioned on a forum about an R40 tour? Seems to be ring a bell. I do hope they go on, sure we'll get another couple of albums even at their current rate. Not sure if I'd like too much 70s stuff though - records I love (I didn't hear then until the mid-80s), but it was all quite a long time ago....
