It's some dude's weirdo tribute bitsa. Nothing to do with John D & not a replica.
I suspect it has a limited market - and that's who's trying to sell it!
Looks like he's handy with a laser engraver, at least.
Spotted that. I guy at my work got gifted an engraver by his daughter. He's already done some impressive stuff with it. I bet PCGsGC will be dead envious if he sees that auction!

"Original guitar with no modification"
Those two extra screws in the bridge to stop the tail-lift are stock?
Saw that. Probably a good idea, but, yeh, it's a mod. If I was interested, I'd ask to see the tailpiece side-on, but am not going to waste the guy's time.

Concur the last Rick I played was really thick on the neck
The 2023 much better
Most of the Rick basses I had had ok necks, my favour being a 'shouldered' 1973 4001 . I also had a V63 which was a dream to look at, and sounded amazing, but the neck was like a baseball bat so it got moved on.

Aww. maaan....
All this came about me thinking about the old Pangton, the model from around 1990 that I when out in Germany around that time.

Overrated : Anything Gibson.
Underrated : Wilkinson pickups , for the price there is no competition , £20 for the nicest sounding P pickup i ever heard is incredible
Anything Wilkinson. Their three-saddle, compensated Tele tailpiece is a fraction of the price of the Gotoh

This has been up for a while, and I'm sure he's increased the stated price in the header yet is asking over £1K in the description. I think he's trolling, getting off on the replies.

Normally when people use two guitars for inspiration, they take the best bits of each guitar and meld them together. They appear to have done exactly the opposite here....
The bloke thinks it's a wonderful player, but that narrow wasted design jars the eye. Also was the three pin output socket common or even used then? Looks very odd to me, why would you do that because youd need expensive and unique cables.
Oh well at £640, I'll never get to know the answers to this.
RobDefinitely an '80s thing, which I reckon this bass is. Alembic and JD certainly used XLR. My guess is the XLR was installed to activate the battery, but that could have been done via jack socket.

So Rickenbackers are overpriced... Who knew, eh?
Compared to what the Yanks can buy them for, most definitely.

Antoria Eagle neck. Dunno what that bridge is off, but Fender had something akin to that on their Elite Series in the '80s. Shadow was a German pup manufacturer.

I'm fascinated by these!
Which cable goes in which input?
I guess I'd need two amps as well?
From memory, didn't some players put one pup through a guitar amp?
Here's the late, great Phil Lynott putting his 4001 through an Acoustic rig and Hiwatt guitar head via Rick-o-sound.

Always fancied one of them. Out of my price range, that one.

Any excuse to post pics of my AliExpress Chickenbacker... Custom 4001/4004 Commission Landed @ £200ish iirc.
Biggest Issue.. Neck Angle. But due to the neck angle, height at the bridge is high... Archtop or Les Paul like at 18mm.
I like the look of the Rick-o-like bridge, i had the A and D saddles shimmed with a 1mm or so washer, to follow the fretboard. But the Rick-o-like Bridge overhanged the body due to 34" scale length, With a new bridge... Super Elevation at the saddles.
I might line up the Rick-o-Like bridge with the saddles turned round, see if it looks like it will intonate?
Never understood how they came to angle the neck and the headstock.

That is what I SHOULD have done... because what arrived from Rickysounds didn't match the photo in the auction. I became concerned that this is not a Neutrik plug at all, and the boot / strain relief not fitting properly looks suspect.
When I pointed this out, I received an angry response from Robbie telling me, "You are wrong". He then called me up on the phone to explain... seems to be some older stock of Neutrik plug from before the name went on them.
A very rude individual. Once tricked me, on a forum, into calling him, as he had some information that might interest me with regard to an item the forum was discussing ( Rick toasters) . Once through to him, he revealed who he was then proceeded to berate me at length. He seemed to think that I was accusing him of selling counterfeit RIC gear, which was far from the truth.

No mention of the circuit. Probably passive.
